Closing Note

Closing this one, and thanks to everyone pitching in!

We've started using "The True Story" more and more in relation to the title now, including in the trailer. It seems to stick, and work well. Guess you can call it a sort-of-tagline/description-thing, and it's very distinct from "A True Story" or "Based On A True Story".

Saying this is THE True Story, in light of all the craziness going on, is funny in itself too. An effective way to present the film's humorous elements.

Description

Ok...

What would be a cool tagline for the movie?

Take a look at the task called Rallying Cry to refresh your memory about the themes we touch upon.

Suggestions in English, Norwegian or both are all fine.
Don't censor yourselves!

I'll ramble first:

- A true story / En sann historie
- The sword from the fjord / [...]
- When the job is done, it's history / Når jobben er gjort er den historie

My shot

I like "All Gave Some. Some Gave All" because it is relevant to the plot. But as the plot is unknown until you actually see the movie, how does this tagline work?

..I think it's great, and I like the seriousness of it.
However, I can't stop thinking that it looks like it could be some kind of word-puzzle or an anagram..

Peter Vesterbacka August 30, 2009 15:01 Flag

It looks pretty good in Norwegian as well I think. A bit too serious in both languages, some kind of joke would help lighten it up.

Thomas Cappelen Malling August 30, 2009 11:48 Flag

Peter - I don´t know. But it translates perfectly to Norwegian - even if you don´t know the language, you can see it by looking at the words:

ALLE GA NOE
NOEN GA ALT

Lord Fakenham August 29, 2009 14:10 Flag

..could that catchphrase somehow be worked into a trailer/teaser? perhaps that could work?

Peter Vesterbacka August 29, 2009 14:03 Flag

Sounds good to me. Any Norwegian twist that you guys could put on that?

Satirically Commendable Comedy -

I do enjoy the 'some gave themselves, i gave you,' tag line
i just wonder if there might be a more 'satirical' approach that
might encapsulate the 'total war' mentality of these particular heros...

perhaps something dark like,

NORWEGIAN NINJA : it's comedy.

Don't make a joke out of it

I like one of the first ones best. "When the job is done, it's history" is the best I think. The rest of the shots make the film sound to funny I think. But again I don't know much about the film, so i might fit just fine.

Definitely, it´s not a comedy (as such).

yeah its all about not closing the deal i guess leave it open ! Leave the audience hungry for more. And with a tagline like that its easy =0)

Eric Vogel August 28, 2009 19:31 Flag

Eva: it's certainly true! Thanks for that.

eva arnardottir August 27, 2009 12:40 Flag

hehe =0)

Lord Fakenham August 17, 2009 19:17 Flag

I, Sir, completely agree! "When the job is done, it's history" is the best one!

Eric Vogel August 17, 2009 18:27 Flag

This is good input. We don't want to sound silly.

How about...

History shrouded in mystery.

Kind of plays off the idea of it being a true story no one knows.

Kjempetorsk

You are probably familiar with the Swedish jokes of "funny" Norwegian words, ie inventing word like "Kjempetorsk" that is supposedly shark in Norwegian.

I kind of like the sound of "Kjempetorsk", it's so different (just like Norwegian Ninja in the first place.

So the tagline could be something like:

- no more Kjempetorsk
- the battle of Kjempetorsk
- the final Kjempetorsk
- the Kjempetorsk stops here
- Kjempetorsk must die

Anyway, just thought that it would be bit different!

Seems like there's a lot of fish and fishing related Norwegian stereotypes we could build on. Kjempetorsk, lutefisk, whales... Maybe you could have a set of taglines related to these kind of stereotypes and also have different posters for each one. Could be a set of simple posters with a Ninja silhouette and just a powerful tagline. That could also work very nicely online, just have simple banners and text ads all over the place. And that could be used already now to drive interest for the production.

Peter Vesterbacka July 09, 2009 22:57 Flag

Yes. Lutefisk is even better as that one is well known all over the place. What about:

Norwegian Ninja - the last of the lutefisk

LOL

Eric Vogel July 09, 2009 22:07 Flag

Hahaha. That's pretty damn far out!

This whole "Kjempetorsk" thing ("the "giant cod fish") is something I've actually heard about. A distributor here in Norway said he's met Swedes who've sworn on their mother's grave that the Norwegian title for "Jaws" was "KJEMPETORSKEN". (in reality, it was "Haisommer" - shark summer)

Anyway, the idea could definitely work well abroad we want to emphasize the Norwegian/comedic aspects of the movie. I.e. creating a play on words that underlines the cultural paradox of ninjas in Norway, and invoking the stereotypes.

In the US (Mid West, especially!), the tagline could be "The lutefisk stops here"...!
Or something with whales...? Vikings?

...

50% Warrior
50% Charmer
12% Lutefisk

112% Ninja

Playing further with colors: in Norwegian it could work with "Norge i rødt, hvitt og svart" as a pun on the patriotic song "Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått"...
