As the world moves closer to a truly open source economic – a ‘socialized capitalism’ or ‘capitalized socialism’ – the possibilities of Open Source filmmaking increase. Creating films in community – where the community contributes the score, titles, effects, edits the script - is about sharing. In the end all the media belongs to the community to remix, reedit and redistribute.
I have recently formed my own Open Source film company, Temple Foundry Mediaworks. Named after my grandmothers steel mill I am hoping to contribute cinema to the world of online film. While many companies in this genre are making big, effects laden films I am hoping to make small, intimate and artsy films with a community of fellow travelers.
So far I have just been putting together the resources: camera, registering name and company, website. I am doing this as I plan my wedding, but as soon as I am back from my honeymoon I will be jumping into the first project full bore: a black and white, silent short in the style of old horror. And then a no-budget feature before jumping into our kids series.
I’m looking for collaborators. Are you in?
