A Zombie/Nuclear Apocalypse from the Perspective of a Remnant Naval Force.
Perry Alexander expected his first time underway as a sailor in the United States Navy to be a quick two-week sea trial. It became a five year odyssey. Just days after leaving his young wife behind on November 5th with a promise of “Back by Thanksgiving” Alexander and his shipmates are summoned and briefed on the terrible events taking place on the mainland. They learn that their “quick underway” was a hastily scheduled response to scattered intelligence reports of aberrant behavior and civil unrest throughout the world- seemingly linked to an undetermined, infectious illness.
His battle group has been forward deployed – against the entire mainland United States. Throughout the country, the sick die, the dead rise, and the living hide. Over ninety percent of the population is presumed dead or infected within two months. The federal remnant government instates martial law before fleeing to island refuge, and the Navy becomes the emblem of rare stability and human authority in the world. Land forces are limited to small outposts as concerned with defending themselves from marauders and raiders as from the undead masses. Meanwhile, society dissolves, morals evaporate, and cities crumble – either by fire from within or conventional and nuclear strikes from the Federal Remnant on CZ’s (concentration zones) of the infected hordes.
Alexander finds himself getting by in a Navy that is evolving to meet the needs of the brave new world they find themselves operating in. He is quickly forced to retrain himself on-the-job in the art of hit-and-run raids for supplies, inland rescue missions, and securing infected assets for re-assimilation into the Naval Remnant’s Forces. Never far from his mind, though, is the desire to return to the unavoidable horror that is his home and confirm the fate of his wife.
