Closing Note

Going with something similar to Generation. Also budget has been put at aside to make that scene really cool.

Description

At the end of the movie the Twister-1 has a failure and crashes on Earth just in the garden of Pirk's palace. Pirk's palace is located in Finland, so the environment are forest and lakes, and no big hills.

Need ideas and reference material what happens when a 500m-spaceship crashes.

One reference is from ST:Generation:

Also the is from 1994 so it was quite certainly done with miniature and few CG involved.

Some ideas

I don't know if you're still looking for new ideas for this, but here's something.

Cause Finland is just water and forest, it would be smart to make the ship hit either one. If the ship would simply drop to the ground directly from up, there would be a huge explosion and the forest around it would just collapse symmetrically. That always looks nice and fits well to Finnish environment. Then some retarded caveman at his summer cottage would stare it and say some stupid one-liner.

But I'm wondering something. How close to Pirk palace it would actually crash? Cause if it would crash very near, then it would destroy the palace too, or the explosion should be very small. A landing in water would also be funny, the water would then wet the palace and Pirk, but is there a lake in Pirk's garden - or did I misunderstood the word garden?

Ok. Then something like what Petri Liuhto suggested is probably best. Though I still find the idea of the ship throwing something over Pirk very nice - maybe the ship throws all the sand, soil and grass all over Pirk and his palace? So it's like this: http://www.aijaa.com/v.php?i=6910231.png

Don't know...

The ship can still be controlled, more or less. So Stöcklin can more or less land the ship intact, but it ends in Pirk's garden, just a few meter from the palace.
We cannot do it do complicates since I don't have the knowledge and tools.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

I just remembered the Star Destroyer crash in that game was quite impressive. Here's the one from the trailer:

And here the in-game cinematic:

Maybe that could be an inspiration as well?

Still I think if the joke is about the destruction of Pirk's beautiful palace garden, the Generations style works best. Back then, I thought the way the trees are mowed down is just spectacular. Now imagine doing the same with delicately trimmed hedges and priceless marbe statues... hehhe :D

Thierry Gschwind January 27, 2010 14:06 Flag

There are plans to do something on a lake....

Petri Liuhto January 27, 2010 14:02 Flag

That bouncing on the water concept could really work. I think you should investigate this further.

Peter Vesterbacka January 27, 2010 10:10 Flag

Not all wheels need to be perfectly round, could still roll;-)

Anyway, I think that there's plenty of potential in making the crash sequence truly spectacular, so let's see what other ideas people have.

Thierry Gschwind January 27, 2010 08:00 Flag

Bouncing of the ground will certainly work better.

Another problem with the rolling is that the saucer section isn't actually round...

Peter Vesterbacka January 27, 2010 05:56 Flag

Yes, the MIB sequence looks good too.

Jani Salomaa January 26, 2010 23:03 Flag

Great idea! If you can't do the rolling saucer thing, you can go for the "throwing flat stones on water" -look.

I mean having the ship's saucer bounce several times off the ground, each time losing some of its' parts.

Look at what they did with Men in Black (around 2 minute mark) and you get the idea.

Petri Liuhto January 26, 2010 21:05 Flag

That's a really cool idea! I can imagine that roling saucer section of death slowly closing into Pirks garden.

Thierry Gschwind January 26, 2010 21:02 Flag

The idea is good.
Unfourtenately we already filmed it that the roof of the bridge is lost before rentry. The ship can't do crazy stuff otherwise Stöcklin would fall of the ship and never have the final encounter with Pirk.
But the ship can still loose some parts on route.

Peter Vesterbacka January 26, 2010 20:12 Flag

Looks very cool! Like the idea of just the spinning wheel in the end. Bet it would look really cool if it started to slow down and you could see the whole thing in slow motion. You would then be on the edge of your seat wondering when it would tiip over and crush something important in Pirk's garden. Obviously it would involve a lot of near misses and all that too;-)

Humour vs Realism

I'm pretty sure that everything in the "Generations" crash is model work from the point the saucer hits the ground, except for the last shot maybe. On the one hand I think it's a good idea to try and imitate this sequence as closely as possible anyway, cause this would be a nice hommage that every trek fan will recognize.

On the other hand, if it's supposed to be a closing joke, it might be better to have the ship hit the ground in a flash, lasting only a couple of frames, and then cover up the whole screen with a huge cloud of dust. Maybe Pirk could even be watching the scene from his window, waiting puzzledly for the smoke to clear. Then, behind the clearing smoke, you could just reveal a matte painting that has the remains of the twister ship in a huge crater, like from a meteor impact, that has totally devestated Pirk's nice park.

Actually it thought that ships slide trough Pirk's garden (destroying all statues and other kitsch) and the front of the ship exactly stops in front of Pirk's balcony, where he is watching the whole scene.

Also there is only Stöcklin on board of the ship and the bridge lost its roof during reentry. Everyone else has been killed long before.
