Description

Here you can post some songs (and music videos) you feel would be good inspirational material for our game design.

Youtube- and Spotify -links are fine, for example, but you can also just post the name of the song and the artist and I'll see if I can get my hands on it. I won't specify styles and it doesn't have to be directly related to the setting.

[Edit:]
As suggested by Angela, here's a link to a cooperative playlist on Spotify that you can add songs on for me to listen. :)

Der Klassiker

I strongly believe most of it must be classic music. It is "Open Source", It is od great quality and applications, and any German would listen to the great ones, what by the way is an infinity source. No Russians playing to the nazi..
Imagine the sonatas from Beethoven, the strong organs from Bach, the mathematics from Mozart. The strong military from Wagner...

Cool

Nice! We've thought of using slow gloomy doom jazz & some industrial ambience in the soundscape, so Magma is very good inspiration. :)

Some more classical works...

Verdi's Dies Irae (day of wrath) part of his Requiem

While the text is in Latin here is however the translation:
The day of wrath, that day
Will dissolve the world in ashes
As foretold by David and the Sibyl!
How much tremor there will be,
when the judge will come,
investigating everything strictly!

Kinda fits the setting here too me thinks.

Second one, Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King

Third is Mussorgsky with Night On a bald mountain:

Fourth we have Stravinsky with The Rite Of Spring - The Adoration of the Earth

The Rite of Spring - The Sacrifice

Some heavy stuff with Bélla Bartok - Music for strings

Nice! Thanks for the suggestions.

Classical music works very well as background music for writing, especially when the language of the vocal parts is unfamiliar enough that I can't follow the words - doesn't distract my language brain too much that way.

Ah yes, I forgot Epica made some classic inspired tracks - which reminds me of this masterpiece from Apocalyptica:

Would be cool to have the Epica version in the game ;)

Apocalyptica - Seeman (feat. Nina Hagen)

Thanks to Pierre Heinen who made me remember this great Rammstein cover:

With Nina Hagen singing in German, it would surely fit the game. Maybe hard to get a licence for but who knows...

And hey, wait a minute, aren't Apocalyptica from Finland? Yes they are! Somebody living in Helsinki could perhaps ask them...

Goodnight Moon

This is a fitting, retro, beautiful and very, very sexy song by Shivaree. Might be beyond your licencing budget, but well worth listening to anyways:

True enough, might be beyond our budget but it's great inspiration! This was in Kill Bill too, wasn't it?

Ahh, it's been a while since I last heard this - definitely very epic and suits the theme of the game perfectly. :)

Some Marschlieder

This site has lists of what must be every marching song of the Wehrmacht, I thought that if you don't have enough music for the game that this would make great backround music ( somthing that would be played while on parade, or at the mess, of perhaps even sung by the soldiers themself )

Awesome! Looks like the (remastered) copies on that site are copyrighted against commercial use, but that seems like a great site to seek reference about Wehrmacht marching songs and we might use some of the original songs which seem to be in public domain. :)

Some space music

I have no idea if these tracks are what you're looking for, but I guess nobody has. So:

Jori Hulkkonen: Gentlemen Prefer Laser, Flash Boy
Herbie Hancock: Future Shock, TFS
Aphex Twin: Blue Calx

I added all these to the Spotify playlist. Enjoy!

Keep true to the time period

What kind of music you'll need really varies on the atmosphere/mood and seriousness of the game. I can see jazz, or maybe something a bit of big band mixed with maybe some electronic synths or SFX.

I'm always a big fan of Jazz Bands like Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers:

And another good one:

At this point it seems that the music will probably be something somewhat jazzy, though not very upbeat or cheerful: an isolated underground Nazi base is a serious, dark and cold place (well, to the characters in the game, at least), and the music should definitely reflect that. It will probably not be very true to the period, but then again, neither are flying saucers, so... :)

Also, there is also the whole matter of Nazis actively disliking jazz, so music that doesn't sound too much like traditional swing might also be historically justifiable.
