Description

EDIT: New themes include apocalypse and utopias

I like to listen to thematically relevant songs whenever I'm writing something. Sometimes I refer to them in the writing itself, and I will have a Playlist at the end of the book. The songs can be in any language, although I only understand Finnish, Swedish, English and German. Feel free to also recommend films, books etc.

These are the major themes and styles of Son of Man. I'm looking for recommendations on songs that could be relevant. (In brackets I have some examples, of what I've already got.)

growing up in the 80s (Manowar: Wheels of Fire, Kim Wilde: Kids in America)
living in the 2000s
identity/roleplaying/changing (Pet Shop Boys: It's a Sin)
gothic/emo/guys with make-up (Cure: Tainted Love, Joy Division: Dead Souls)
graffiti
Jesus/religion (Genesis: Jesus He Knows Me, Depeche Mode: Personal Jesus)
playboy/pick-up artist
corrupt local politics (Leonard Cohen: First We Take Manhattan, Ennio Morricone: The Ballad of Sacco & Vanzetti)
apocalypse/end of the world/millennium
utopias/dystopias

Any suggestions are welcome! If you can nail several themes with the same song, all the better!

Emo & Finnish music

Alright, I won't be choosing music that I consider good or bad or even tolerable to listen to, just anything that goes with the themes you mentioned.

Dystopia/judgement day: Project Pitchfork - In the Year 2525 (Laibach has the prettier version but the harsh sound fits better I think)

Emo/depression/living in the 2000's/Jesus complex: KMFDM - Stray Bullet (also known as the Jokela amok run song)

More emo: Jimmy Eat World - Cautioners

Also, I notice a lack of Finnish music. First of all the indie rap artists:

Steen1 - Sinisiä rappuja ja punaisia hintalappuja (featured in the movie Paha maa)
Notkea Rotta - Maailma on rotta (this is hjuumor - but note the intertextuality to Pelle Miljoona)

Then the classics you couldn't avoid in the 80's..

Dingo - Lähetyssaarnaaja
Pelle Miljoona - Moottoritie on kuuma
Hassisen kone - Jeesus tulee
Sielun veljet - Tällä tiellä
Leevi and the Leavings - Teuvo, maanteiden kuningas (edit: Poika nimeltä Päivi is probably more relevant..)
Hector - Sudenkorento (a David Bowie cover!)
Juice Leskinen - Paperitähdet
Eppu Normaali - Vuonna 85

The few religion themed Finnish songs I could think of right away:

Freud Marx Engels & Jung - Monenkirjava tilkkutakki
Pekka Ruuska - Rafaelin enkeli

Fine list, Anna. Great job finding fitting Finnish music.

I'm sick and tired of the artists, but many of the songs are just beautiful.

Anna Krokfors December 19, 2009 21:44 Flag

Well, the song Lapsuuden usko has been covered by several artists, it's originally '500 Miles' that was done by at least The Hooters. Just the version I happened to find.

Mike Pohjola December 15, 2009 23:47 Flag

Mikko Leppilampi? What kind of man do you take me for?! :)

Anna Krokfors December 12, 2009 23:58 Flag

Glad that you liked those, may I suggest more of the same genre then:

Pekka Ruuska - Anna mun etsiä
Mikko Leppilampi - Lapsuuden usko
Edu Kettunen - Lentäjän poika
Miljoonasade - Lapsuuden sankarille
Hector - Lumi teki enkelin eteiseen; Olen hautausmaa <-- check out the lyrics, he sings "Olen Jeesus-lapsi ilman Mariaa.. olen Raamattu uus".
edit: Samuli Edelmann - Kirkossa

Don McLean - American Pie
Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson

Mike Pohjola December 12, 2009 10:58 Flag

Great list, thanks Anna!

I've added all I could find on the Spotify playlist that you can access here: http://open.spotify.com/user/revontuli/playlist/4fpOVEAOnU8ayxZGrnV84K

Unfortunately In the Year 2525 could be found as neither PP or Laibach version...

Stray Bullet I'm gonna save for another project (also a book in the works) since this book ends in 2004 and the Finnish school shootings came later...

Special kudos for Rafaelin enkeli and Sudenkorento, they're great for this!

More great songs

Here's a real load of music you should check out. And this is just a summary walkthrough through my collection. Do inquire about any artist you find intriguing, as what i posted here are just rather most easily accessible songs by that artist. Many have their real gems hidden way below their pop charts...

Theme:

1) Sex
- Vanessa Daou: Becoming a Nun (also fits religion theme... This is a kinky tune to be sure! Be-CUMMING a nunnn...mmmm.)
- Shivaree: Goodnight Moon (also "My Little Black Black Mess". That's a classic Casablanca sex oozing voice.)
- Afghan Whigs: "66" and the song "Something Hot". (Also fits 90's theme)
- Bettye Lavette: He Made a Woman Outta Me ("I guess I teased too hard, one day it all happened, right on my on backyard. Joe Henry had his way, and then set me free, Lord i'm here to tell everybody that a man made a woman outta me.")
- Fiona Apple: Shadowboxer ("I've been a bad, bad girl, I've been careless with a delicate man.")
- Jamie Foxx: Unpredictable (""Regular" ain't in my vocabulary, and when it comes to lovemaking, neither is 'missionary'.")

2) Dating (I had to scrap most of the candidates here, since there were just too many of 'em to keep this list realistic.)
- Aimee Mann: Save Me ("You look like a perfect friend / for a girl in need of a tourniquet.")
- Badly Drawn Boy: What is it Now? ("Now that life'll never be the same, we have to face the thought of loneliness again")
- Bebo & Cigala: Lagrimas negras (what a painful voice the spaniard has!)
- Belle and Sebastian: Blues are Still Blue ("I left my lady in the launderette, you can put some money on it, you can place a little bet, that when i see my lady, then white'll be black, and the black'll be white. But the Blues are still blue!")
- A Fine Frenzy: Happier (Best breakup song ever. No kidding. Bittersweet to tears.)
- Elliott Smith: Waltz no.2 (shall be my wedding waltz. "I'm never gonna know you now, but I will love you anyhow.")
- Glenn Hansard and Marketa Irglova: If You Want Me (plenty cheesy, but done with plenty of emotion.)
- Jeanne Cherhal: Parfait Inconnu (I don't know any French, but it still rocks.)
- Nick Drake: Things Behind the Sun (Look out. This is one of the most depressing songs ever. The poor man couldn't even have anyone else in the studio, and committed suicide shortly after. This is his last gasp at optimism, which makes it all the sadder..)
- Robyn Hitchcock: I'm Falling (Whatta bass/baritone in the chorus!)

3) Punk and underground. (sorry, don't know much actual punk, but these are as close as i can get.)
- Asian Dub Foundation: Fortress Europe (also growing up in 2000s)
- Ska-P: A La Mierda (Spanish Ska about xenophobia)
- Emir Kusturica and the No-Smoking Band: Unza Unza Time (Balkanian craziness, best served with a stout bottle of vodka)
- Future of the Left: The Hope that House Built, and Throwing Rocks at Trains. ("Above the trash, above the tracks, there is no mercy, there is no fear")
- Kimya Dawson: Loose Lips (No way near conventional punk, but in it's minimalism, it's minimalist punk in my ears.)

3) Religion and Jesus
- Arcade Fire: Intervention (holy church organ, Batman!)
- Fall Out Boy: Hum Hallelujah (references Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, which is nice. Also OK Go's song "Let It Rain" does that.)
- Jeff Buckley: Corpus Christi Carol and Eternal Life (Last Goodbye and Hallelujah round out one of the best records of our age).
- Sharon Stone & the Dap Kings: Answer Me ("Answer me, sweet Jesus, answer me now, I need ya now")

4) Graffiti
- Don Johnson Big Band: Helsinki Cadenza (
- Paleface: Ultimate Jedi Mind Trick: Episode IV ("

5) Corruption:
- Paleface: Maximize the Profit ("I huff it, and i puff, it and i maximize the prophet, and I'll blow yo house down")
- Flaming Lips: The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song ("If you could make everybody poor, just so you could be rich, would you do it? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!")

Thanks. Unza unza oppa isn't the same, but has some of the same elements.

I'll try to look through the rest of my music to see if i missed anything. Too bad some of them weren't in spotify - but overall i'm amazed how much WAS there. I mean, there was everything from Spanish ska to Finnish rap on the list..

Mike Pohjola November 26, 2009 07:48 Flag

What a great list! Thank you!

I've looked them all up on Spotify, and added them to the collaborative Son of Man playlist.
(Except for Emir Kusturica's band, but I found a song called Unza Unza Oppa by Kalascima, which I assume is the same song in a different version. And the ones by Kimya Dawson, DJBB and Sharon Stone weren't there at all.)

Thanks, Jani!

A couple of songs

Growing up in the 80's

-All the cheesy italo disco tunes. Artist like My Mine, Kano, Danuta, Savage...even Boys Boys Boys by Sabrina

Identity/Graffiti

-I grew up listening to rap music. One of my favourite albums was then (and still is) the indie-rap classic "Funcrusherplus" by Company Flow. It's kind of dark and chaotic rap music with lo-fi production and the lyrics have many references to graffiti. They even have song called "Lune Tns" which only about dropping names of graffiti artists. In "8 Steps to perfection" the rappers brag about organized graffiti, that society can't controll. Other works of El-P, the mastermind behind Company flow are interesting as well.

-One of the favourite rap groups of my teenage days was also Swedish underground/indie group called LoopTroop. Many of their songs are about graffiti. Just to mention "Ambush In the Night" and "Spraycan Stories", which as much about stealing spraycans as painting graffiti. To an adult their lyrics sound naive, but case of a 16-year-old boy was completely different.

Both Compaly Flow and LoopTroop had the "fuck the society"-attitude and anarchistic political message.

Corrupt local politics/Identity

There is a ton of rap songs about corrupted/racistic/violent police departments. Maybe the "Fuck the Police" by N.W.A is official anti-police anthem. Yeah, I took a lot of influences from that song as well, when I was searching my identity.

Dubstep

I first posted this one to wrong place. I'm sorry for that. Feel free to delete my first post.

Anyway...

When it comes to living in the 2000's, dubstep is probably the most significant new music genre. The sound of dubstep is hard to describe, but in a nutshell it's deep, dark and often very bass-heavy electronic music originating from London.

The genre is not album-oriented and the easiest way to get stuff is just to google "dubstep mix mp3" and get a mix to download. Mixes differ from each other - just like the whole thing. There is danceable (but still deep, dark and gloomy) "party" music and there is non dance-oriented music.

The dubstep album, that I would recommend is "Untrue" by Burial, that someone has described being "the soundtrack of rainy and empty city of London at night". The album contains only very few vocals (all sampled) and it's more about electronic sound walls about feeling of being desperate and alone in urban environment and looking for love and friendship.

Nice idea, I think... I've never really listened to any dubstep, but will begin with Untrue!

Me and Pink Floyd

When I left home for studies and become independent, there were a couple of bands that made (and still make) the soundtrack of my life. For you I recommend Pink Floyd; especially High Hopes from Division Bell. That would fall probably into the emo category.

After some googling I found from http://www.queststudios.com/quest/classics.html

Leisure Suit Larry (In The Land Of The Lounge Lizards)
"For Your Thighs Only"
More commonly referred to as "The Larry Theme." Written by Al Lowe and arranged by Tom Lewandowski. For General MIDI.

Check out the general midi Larry Theme http://www.queststudios.com/agi/lslagi_1.zip ...ah... the memories =)

Mike Pohjola October 15, 2008 19:33 Flag

From Pink Floyd I've only really listened to the Wall. Will look up High Hopes, thanks!

American Jesus, how could I forget that! Any song with Jesus in the title is a must.

...Al Lowe wrote music? Come on! Are you kidding me?

Atte Joutsen October 13, 2008 16:21 Flag

Also American Jesus by Bad Religion (Jesus category), Master of the Winds by Manowar (emo roleplaying).. ...and For your thighs only by Al Lowe (from Leisuresuit Larry, playboy/80's ;)

Comply

I have a process some what like this when writing. When I'm listening to a song I find a chapter in my book that relates to it and just start writing.

I like to listen to just about anything from Tool. I think they fit under identity/roleplaying/changing.
Preferable songs: H., Jimmy, Lateralus, Thrid Eye and Push it.

Living in 2000 could be Slipknot.
Preferable songs: Wait and Bleed, Vermilion & Part 2, The Nameless and The Virus of Life.

Will name others if you have more genres in mind.

Melancholy to add to the mix

If you want to have some slow pace moodiness in the book, look no further than Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley.

For example, Elliott's song Waltz No. 2 on the album XO is a masterpiece in melancholy songwriting. "I'm never gonna know you, now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow", sings he with appropriate passion.

Drake's pre-suicide album Pink Moon is about the saddest thing i've ever heard.

And Buckley's only album 'Grace' has unlimited power to it. Songs 'Last Goodbye' and the famous Cohen cover 'Hallelujah' should show you the way to this way-too-early-departed genious.

Jani; I just got hold of Neon Bible, and it's indeed an excellent album! Intervention will definitely make it on my novel's playlist, probably some other songs as well...

Jani Salomaa December 15, 2008 21:51 Flag

And yet another one for different effect: If you want some naughty, naughty, nasty, nasty ambience in your book, there's nothing better than Vanessa Daou's album "Zipless" to tease you.

When she whispers sweetly "beCOMING a nun, beCOMING a nun, beCOMING a nun", i bet you'll have hard time keeping your monk gown on!

Jani Salomaa December 15, 2008 21:42 Flag

Oh! A great one for the Jesus & religion category: Arcade Fire's fantastic album Neon Bible!!! And especially the song Intervention, which combines church organs, rock, and a tale about an fallen priest to a chilling degree.

Jani Salomaa December 15, 2008 21:33 Flag

Waltz #2 is about an altogether failed and miserable artist guy, who happens to see his once-upon-a-time high school sweetheart going out with her new upper class husband.

Althought the girl is dressed elegant, she is out of place. The husband treats her like a prostitute. And the girl is wrecked. ("She shows no emotion at all / stares into space like dead China doll")

In fact, despite all the gloss, money and fancy suits, she is in a worse state than our story's piss-poor protagonist.

Finally our hero despairs, because he can't find the strength to rise up to the kind of rich bastards like the girl's husband. ( I'm no good, i'm no good, i'm no good - can't you tell, that it's well understood).

That's songwriting for ya!!!

Mike Pohjola November 01, 2008 14:53 Flag

I've started listening to these... Waltz #2 is an interesting mix of very sad lyrics and a strangely upbeat folkish melody. Have to listen to it a couple more times to make sure I get it :)

Mike Pohjola October 15, 2008 19:35 Flag

I've never listened to these artists. Will do so shortly, and comment on them in more detail. Thanks!

Few albums and songs

growing up in the 80s: David Bowie - Young Americans; Judas Priest - Breaking the Law (actually the whole Painkiller-album), Billy Idol - Cyberpunk-album; Kauko Röyhkä - Disko-Datsun.

living in the 2000s: Rammstein - Amerika

identity/roleplaying/changing: Mr. Bungle - Vanity Fair

gothic/emo/guys with make-up: Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar -album

Jesus/religion: Laibach's album "Jesus Christ Superstar" is all about Jesus and christian religion.

playboy/pick-up artist: There I would suggest definitively: Scissor Sisters: Ta-Dah.

corrupt local politics: Shitter Limited's music in general.

I've started listening to these. Added Rammstein's Amerika on my playlist, and Manson's The Not So Beautiful People, although that's from a different album.

Mike Pohjola October 15, 2008 19:31 Flag

Excellent suggestions! Most of these I know vaguely, but don't have in my own music library.

Unsurprisingly, very few bands write songs about local politics in a universal way, so your idea there is very useful!
