Description

What would be a great name for a supporting cast member for the book Son of Man?

The guy is a freaky androgynous artist/activist/philosopher with punkish hair, facial piercings, tattoos, interests in occultism and graffiti. The setting is Finland in the early 2000s, but the name should preferably be international.

I was thinking about calling him Trans (his original name would've been Frans and he would've changed it), but I fear it would lead the reader to only think of transvetism.

Any suggestions? I know if there's a bunch of people who can think of freaky names, it's you!

Meta

I've chosen to call the character Meta. It seemed a bit too obvious at first, but I'm beginning to like it. One good thing is that it's not a male or a female name.

It also has lots of explanations aside from the obvious: The wife of Athens' mythical king Aegius, a genus of spider, it can be short for Methane, and so on.

Thanks for all who contributed!

I think it's kinda hard to identify with a character who seems to be nothing more than a forum nick.. I'd suggest Mike (yes that'd be intentional) or Juri/Yuri, but otherwise Matti or Valtteri, perhaps Meta.

Oooh, he would be the coolest of the cool guys and hippest of the hipsters.

I just got a practically opposite suggestion to this, a name so uncool it's starting to become cool again:
Melvin

More from Facebook

Edward D. Wood Jr.
Tiber and Rubikon. A strange duo.
Meta.
Matti. For obvious contrast. Depending on age, calls himself Dork, Suicide-by-Fingernails, Zorror, ColorSpirit, Spr8Mate, finally settling to Sprayte.

Biblical

I'd suggest some biblical name or even a name of an angel. Those are quite international and would fit the theme of the book. Also, since everyone expects this kind of character to have a freaky name, a biblical name might be a nice twist. If he was named after an angel (by his religious parents), that could explain his interest in occultism. He read about biblical stuff as a kid, but felt more drawn to the dark side. But on the other hand traditional rebellion against parents and their values might be a cliche.

Unsurprisingly I have quite a bit of Biblical names already, but the name of an angel might be a nice ironic twist.

Let's see, archangels in different churches include at least Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jegudiel, Barachiel, Sealtiel, Suriel, Zadakiel, Sarathiel and Aniel. And then there's the fallen angels Samael and Remiel.

I don't know, maybe they're a bit too fansy and pompous?

Zeke or Kali

Zeke has it's punk roots, so would kinda fit the character. Kali - I don't know, it's an Indian thingamajic something-something, but would maybe fit to a character of that type.

Zeke! Z is good... Also comes from Hebrew, Hezekiel. And it's the name of Li'l Wolf's father Zeke Wolf :)

Kali is the Hindu goddess of destruction, and sounds kind of like the name of an evil hippie. Maybe not postmodern/punk enough...

Zane

I suggest the name Zane.
If you want a possible supporting back ground "Some people think he has adopted his family name to sound cool, how ever Zane is not his family name. Others just think it is a catchy nick-name, but this also is not the case. It is his birth given name. When choosing names his parents found out that 'Zain' means 'godly light' in Hindu and were on the look for a non-common name, but unknowingly used the more common name 'ane' spelling."

Not bad... I like the Hindu angle, and Zane sounds like (In)sane, which is always good. According to Wikipedia, it's originally a Semitic name, and is sometimes used in the US.
