Description

To give the community something extra in exchange for the ideas and support, we are thinking of featuring our WreckAMovie production members in the game itself (instead of only in the credits). Now, there's a whole lot of ways of doing this, and this is why we would like your ideas about the matter.

It'll be hard to put you in as characters with your own names, since it might feel weird to the player: where do all these Nazis with non-German names come from? We could, however, make characters with a German name and personality similar to yours as well as something extra (a bit of dialogue from you, perhaps, or some recognizable special item the character carries, some clues in the character's apartment or bunk).

Another even more subtle approach would be to use your names whenever we have in-game messages and dialogue mentioning foreign people (from Nazi perspective). You could become Allied scientists, generals, spies, prisoners, test subjects,... Here, again, we are glad to hear you about how you'd like to be presented - as a pacifist hero doctor or a vicious war criminal. :D

Finally, we could do this through a secret level of some sort - an easter egg like the head of John Romero on a stick in Doom II (that you have to approach with cheat codes to find). This would allow making characters named exactly after you and since it would not be part of the actual storyline (it could be some unlockable gamemode, for example), we wouldn't have to worry about it's effect on game balance or immersion.

Nothing is stopping us from using several of these approaches alongside each other, this might be a nice touch too to your own game experience - you'd never know where in the game your name might pop up.

Things to consider:
* Preserve the alternate WWII atmosphere - if every other character speaks in leetspeek and drops an ipod nano the easter egg is going a bit too far. :)
* A major part of the game takes place in the Nazi base, how applicable is your suggestion within the base?

Of course, if you don't want to featured at all you can send me a message and I'll make a note of it, we won't force anyone. :)

If such terrible name falls in, who cares! :)
But as Mechanical Engineers and Machine designer (and extra weird gadgets thinker) I would see myself as scientist staff... nevertheless I am now developing at work a machine as big as the Haunebu :o) it just won't fly :(..
Or my real name in Latin version: Leonardo Pinhel. Leonardo is always associated with brilliant genius capable superior minds :D Just, what is a Brazilian doing there, how was he convinced to coop with the nazi? Strange mysteries rounds Antarctica...

Knight's Cross soldiers

It would be cool to have some people in the Nazi base that are Knight's Cross wielders, well respected soldiers, loyal and pride of their nation. These soldiers could be patrolling around alone or with other SS-soldiers.

If I could get a little mention, it would be cool, my name would be Heinz Eberbach. My character would be a Knight's Cross soldier or scientist, which polishs his medals every day and carries a picture of the Fuhrer with him. Just a little thought ^^

Sure, that's very doable. I'll make a note of Heinz Eberbach and assign it to an NPC first thing tomorrow!

War correspondent "Heinrich Peterl"

Since I've always wanted to be a journalist, I would like to be (if possible) some sort of war correspondent / journalist in the game.

Like the one in "Das Boot". Taking pictures and writing under strict command from the "Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda" back to the Reichspresse in Berlin. Where all the informations I am sending to are filtered and somehow released. Since it's a secret base, I don't have a lot to do ;) or they don't let me :)

I (Heinrich Peterl) have been relocated to the base because of taking too many pictures of dead German soldiers on the front and showing them back home.

And because of my well known family they can't just kill me. My father (high officer somewhere) and the authorities then decided to teach me a lesson and "freeze" me somewhere far away.

So I am a bit frustrated, only have very limited access around the base and I am guarded by an SS-man, who let's me sometimes go on my own for some cigarettes in place. So I am sneaking around, always searching for any diversification ;) and maybe I have already been arrested ...

I agree with Matti. It is simply not affordable for the timeline of the project

Matti Delahay November 07, 2011 07:08 Flag

I agree with Markus, this isn't really relevant for this shot, though you're free to post a new shot on the topic in General Ideas task over here:
http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/790

To answer shortly, though, when deciding the premise of the game we decided to make a prequel game set ~60 years before the movie to give us more freedom in plot and storyline while making it pretty hard to feature characters of the movie directly. If we would have chosen to simply re-tell the exact story in the movie, there would be no branching storyline, it'd be just another railroad shooter. Moreover, whichever you watched/played first, it would completely spoil the other one. Matrix took a third option and actually cut out parts of the story from the 2nd and 3rd movies and showed those only as cutscenes in the game and not in the movie. This would have required planning from the beginning of the movie production, however, and would have slowed down the movie production, adding significant costs, and left us very little room for any sort of artistic freedom. Moreover, it would have crippled the movie experience somewhat for those who wouldn't want to play the game.

You are naturally very free to disagree, but this isn't really something that we're about to change at this point of the production.

Markus Koskivirta November 06, 2011 20:40 Flag

Those aren't really topics relevant to this shot.
Also, those characters are not on the base.

Ryan R. Walsh November 05, 2011 00:58 Flag

And A modeled replica of Udo

Ryan R. Walsh November 05, 2011 00:58 Flag

To be Honest Matti and Timo Vuorensola. I would definently have Some Characters based off the Actual movie if possible. Thats what the Matrix did, Lord of The Rings, etc. You make a Feature Film, You need Feature film actors in the game. But thats my opinion on the marketing of the video game.. And Matrix Video Game did fairly well. And inside the Matrix DVDs you had a small advertisement paper of the video game being promoted. Need voice acting of the super stars like.. Udo Kier. Thats what would of been on my Agenda if I was heading up this game.

Matti Delahay November 04, 2011 10:56 Flag

Just letting you know that I'm writing a character bio for your character now, he'll be working as a photographer and secretary under a Gestapo investigator who is also tasked to keep an eye on him at all times.

Matti Delahay July 07, 2011 06:49 Flag

Sure, we can work with that! As always, we might make changes that feel necessary, but I'm not expecting anything major for this character. :)

Makoto Midori, Japanese soldier

Well, let's just say Germany decided to be a little nice to its allies by inviting a few of their soldiers to their secret program. And yes, I tried to Japan-ize my name. XD

His bio:
-A somewhat nice guy, but also can be quite annoying.

-Incredibly smart.

-Fluent in German and English as well as his native language, Japanese.

-Phrases he will most often use (and yes, I do use these phrases in real life.):

"ALTERNATE! ALTERNATE! ALTERNATE!"
If he is present in certain situations in the game, Makoto chants this when you're faced with multiple decisions. He does this so as to make you ALTERNATE between those decisions to try to keep you frustrated, just for his own entertainment.

"Go squish yourself!"
If you diss him during a normal conversation with him, he will shout this out loud in your face.

"YES!" (while doing that move in which you move your fist and forearm swiftly downward in a vertical position. What was that move called, though?)
Will do this when you finish one of his quests.

That might work, if by endgame the Insider character is influential enough with the top brass, he might be able to have him saved.

Mark Medrano July 08, 2011 10:29 Flag

Matti: I think perhaps there should be a little thing at the end of the game that involves you deciding Makoto's fate. It's either take him or kill him.

Matti Delahay June 20, 2011 06:31 Flag

Mark: Unfortunately the Nazis in our game don't have technology advanced enough for efficient brainwashing.

I fear they'd have to either take Midori with them to the Moon in the end (if he was really useful) or kill him before leaving (they can't leave anyone to leak the information on their mission, not Germans and especially not foreigners).

Carl: Very good!

If you do, please post them here:
http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/1429

Mark Medrano June 17, 2011 18:17 Flag

I think I have another idea. Once you finish all his side-quests, he will eventually be told to leave for Japan, and will probably have his memory wiped by means of some new Nazi technology.

Matti Delahay June 17, 2011 07:41 Flag

Thanks for the character!

We'll have to think about his background carefully so that he fits in smoothly, though!

The Nazis were pretty adamant about their "Aryan master race" -ideologies. That's why they'd need a very good reason to invite a foreigner (even from a friendly nation) into their most secret research facility.

How would it sound to you if your character was such an excellent test pilot that they decided to have him test some of the earliest (very dangerous and unstable) UFO designs? Many of the Nazis might dislike him for being a foreigner, but he would still be very useful to the scientists so they would keep him around and even grant him privileges.

Himmler's körperdouble

I fancied that I could be Himmler's body double, even in these times prominent people had doubles.

This picture could be found as part of secret documents...

That's original and should also be very easily doable. :D

Neither Himmler nor his double ever visited the base, but the internal secret police of the base would probably have a file on him/them anyway.

The uncanny Major. Heinrich

I was a Major in the army and has been trained ( and trained others ) in CQB, hand to hand combat, explosives and shooting.

I speak Danish, English, German and a bit Russian ( with a Hungarian accent ). My personality has been characterized to be the same as Reinhard Heydrich.

Looking at my contry's history I would be a likely candidate for a Frikorps Danmark Eastern Front veteran who was called back for special operations or Werewolf groups.

Sure. I'm up for the ruthless SS officer. ;-) Look pretty good in SS uniforms :-) Did a photo shoot for a movie as a Danish SS officer a long time ago.

Did a description of Major Heinrich elsewhere on this production. Just for the fun of it :-)

Matti Delahay June 28, 2011 07:24 Flag

Sounds good, welcome to the production!

We could either have Heinrich as a regular officer in the base make him distinguished enough to be a member of the special elite SS unit stationed in the base (if you don't mind being represented by a pretty ruthless, loyal-to-the-core Nazi trooper, that is).

Wahrheit Heute

Here's the German logo for Truth Today, if you want to use it in the game like Seppo suggested.

Someone with real German skills, please tell me if this is the proper translation!!

Also it could use a fun slogan in German to replace the Latin "ridentem dicere verum quid vetat". Any ideas?

EDIT: Added versions with Seppo's slogans.

Very well, after all "Truth today" isn't the best English either.. as long as there will be no Raumnazis :)

Jani Salomaa November 20, 2009 20:31 Flag

OK, we'll stick with Wahrheit Heute. It seems to get most support, and besides, that's what my laziness tells me to do;)

Entschuldigung Anna!

Carl L. November 20, 2009 19:14 Flag

"Wahrheit Heute" is good. Nothing wrong with that german!

Seppo Hiltunen November 19, 2009 08:00 Flag

Jani, the joke suffers, if we are calling the paper "Die Wahrheit Tageblatt". It must be a translation of the english Truth Today and thus "Wahrheit Heute", just to show that the truth can be adjusted every day...

Anna: there are newspaper names in Germany without the definitive article "die/der/das" in front of the name. "Berliner Tageblatt", "Welt am Sonntag" "Frankfurter Allgemeine" and many more. I guess "Wahrheit Heute" is ok too, perhaps genuine german wreckers can state which one is the right version?

Jani Salomaa November 18, 2009 22:30 Flag

Anna - I asked a German friend of mine, and he said it's ok.

But looking through a list of newspapers, maybe something like "Die Wahrheit Tag" oder "Die Wahrheit Tagblatt" (why is it Tagblatt or sometimes Tageblatt?) would be better. It still should be pretty close to the English name Truth Today, which isn't a very common newspaper name either.

What do you think?

Anna Krokfors November 18, 2009 16:52 Flag

It should be "Die Wahrheit heute", although another translation might be better.. doesn't sound quite right in German.

Matti Delahay November 16, 2009 13:15 Flag

Jani: Thanks! That was very fast. :)

We'll have to see about the paperboy too, as our production progresses. It would certainly be great publicity.

Jani Salomaa November 16, 2009 13:10 Flag

Matti - added German slogan versions.

You should make a special issue of Wahrheit Heute, hire a paperboy (or THE paperboy the Iron Sky team has used) and have him spread the paper at games conventions. They gathered a lot of attention at Cannes and the Berlinale using this trick.

Matti Delahay November 16, 2009 12:33 Flag

Great! I like both of Seppo's ideas, especially the latter one. :D

Jani, could you make two new versions of the logo, one with "Ein Reich, eine Zeitung, eine Wahrheit" and one with "Die Wahrheit gehört uns"? :)

Seppo Hiltunen November 16, 2009 12:18 Flag

Slogan for that newspaper? I suggest simply: "Ein Reich, eine Zeitung, eine Wahrheit"

(One country, one newspaper, one truth)

Another came to my mind: "Die Wahrheit gehört uns"

(Truth is our property)

;)

Matti Delahay November 16, 2009 11:57 Flag

I meant to comment on this earlier, but it got lost in the unexplored terrain that is my TODO-list.

This is really great, we'll certainly use this with the game! If anyone can think of a good slogan in German, it'll be absolutely perfect. :) (Perhaps I should make a new task out of that, now that I think about it.)

Spencer Lunsford November 15, 2009 04:50 Flag

Yes the correct translation for "Truth Today" is "Wahrheit heute"

Carl L. November 11, 2009 13:58 Flag

"Unzensierte freie Presse"
and then have a bunch of blacked out stuff :-)
