Odesean Art

I've been thinking about giving a shot about Odesean Art and since it was a long time ago, I figured why not doing it now?

The Odeseans are a proud people and that is reflected in their art: it can't be grand enough: the music and the paintings (the most important art branches) all reflect how strong and rich Odeseum is.

Example of how the Music is like:

Sorry for the video it was the only one with this kind of music I know.

Drawings and paintings:
The drawn art will mainly show pretty people in rich clothers, fully in control of their emotions and themselves. People can be shown doing the most cruel of things with calm faces, sometimes even without weapons. The Odeseans are masters in picking the right moment, if something is happening they will draw what happened a few seconds before the actual action.
That makes that Odesean art is calm and it seems that the Odeseans are in control. If you just look at it by passing by, most often you won't know what it represents.
A good example of this is this drawing of mine (it's a Hetalia fanart I made a while ago):

I'll make an Odesean version of it later.

Info or not...

A long time ago I came up with the idea of Odeseum, a wealthy nation that gains its money by selling high-tech weapons and tourism.
You are free to use it.

Name: Odeseum
People: Odeseans (Human)
Religion: Officially none: they believe in science.

History
When Odeseum was founded nobody knows, the Odeseans themselves don't worry about how they came there but how they'll stay. (See later)
Odeseum is a nation of traders, and wealth attracts enemies. The Odesean nation had to deal with many enemies, sometimes Odeseum lost sometimes they won, but the Odesean Senate (the main government) decided to start an army and deal with the threat for ever, by conquering the neighbour states.
But the generals soon realised that if the territory grew bigger at the current tempo the protective wings of the army wouldn't cover everything anymore, thus leaving land out of reach of the central government in Odeseum-City.
The Senate decided against any further expansion and made of the surrounding states protectorates. They had to defend themselves and Odeseum and in exchange the Odeseans would build roads, schools, provide weapons at lower prises, etc.
Now that the landly borders were safe the Odeseans felt free to concentrate on the one border that wasn't secure yet: the sea.
Odeseum has a long coastline to have as much ports as possible and Odeseum-City was a coastal city. That was the reason that the Senate build a large fleet, destroyed all pirates in the area and they started to look further. They wanted more.
The Senate send out ships to search 'une terre vierge' a new world, they found it in an archipelago in the ocean, and build there colonies providing special spices and other precious stuff.
Scientists thought that the skylands could be colonised too, but the Senate thought that the Skylands were worthless. It took another hundred years before something happened on that level.
After the Odeseans developed a very primitive flying machine (a balloon) to reach a skyland they found that there had been a new world above their heads all along.
The Odeseans installed themselves up there.

Politics
The Odesean political system is odd.
In the beginning there had been a King but since he couldn't stop the attacks, the people thought they could do better and founded the Senate. The senate consists out of two hundred men and women. Every four years the Senate get's chosen by the people out of the People's Party, those people have worked on their image, those who have done most in the people's interest will be senator. The current Senators will be replaced and will have to use the People's Party to win the next elections.
Thus People's Party is what we would call the opposition. And like the opposition the can put pressure on the Senate in order to get things done.
The tricky thing about Odesean politics is that there are no parties like we know them. There are only temporary alliances, formed by politicians to get things done, Sometimes because it is asked, sometimes because they have to.
Although the Senate knows that the senators would discuss forever if there were more then two alliances, the Senate has two leaders (the prospective Senators with the largest amount of votes), who have to formulate two points of view (POV's) and the Senators have to choose (separately) for A. or B. if they choose alliance A they will sit on the left side of the Senate room, if they choose B on the right side.
The Senate, and most of the other Odesean governmental institutions are situated in the Palace of Liberty, build as a palace for the king but the king never was able to live in it, because his dynasty ended before it was finished.

Culture
The Odesean culture is based upon the Roman. But has evolved over times. But some things never got out: When the Gothic Architecture was introduced the Odeseans adapted it to their own particular culture: the arches were round, the columns are still kinda Roman...
The Odeseans have despite their wealth also developed an sober architecture because of the attacks. They reasoned that if the house looked poor they would not be ransacked. But the inside was wealthy decorated. The trick worked but not until the marauders looked inside every house. But after the Odeseans secured their lands, that part of the architecture was replaced again by richer outfits.
The Odeseans speak a modern version of Latin.
The Names of cities will always be Latin inspired. Most cities have a prefix: Colonia, Muncicipium or Villa and after it often a girls name or something special in the
Region.
Like: Villa Jana, Colonia Lavranna.
Or sometimes the prefix disappears making Colonia Mellissana, just Mellissana.

Military
Landarmy
The Odesean army is structured like the Roman army. Only they have more different types of units and more advanced weaponry
Sea-army
The Army on the sea's is one of the most modern known, the Odesean frigate is one of the most feared ships in existence. It is fast and well armed, and navigates never alone but in fleets of two or more.
The Pirates fear this ship the most because it used it’s speed and strength to do to them what they do to their victims. The Move-in-move-out tactic.
Many other states want to have this kind of ship, which makes it the most copied ship ever.

Economy
The Odeseans have the ‘Odesean Trading Company’ which sells weapons expensive spices etc around the globe, the Odeseans have one major problem: food: the lands of Odeseum aren’t rich enough to feed the whole population. That’s why they have to be strong on other points.

This is basically what Odeseum is, if you’re interested I could develop it further and adapt it to fit in eldOnia, which I already did a little.

ahh, dwarves have been renowned for building in many stories, bulding into mountains and such with may different materials, you could use that, ad they could trade there things for the odeseans.

Max Schellenberg November 28, 2009 16:21 Flag

Yeah its hard to explain. :P

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 28, 2009 16:18 Flag

I imagined that Eldonia in the early years of the 18th century, i.o.w. in the beginning of the industrial revolution, that meant on our planet just started with steam, and used animals, men, wind to power it's devices.
Perhaps it would be necessary to expand the synopsis and explain exactly what you want so we can focus on that. it would be very helpful

Max Schellenberg November 28, 2009 15:36 Flag

That reminds me, guns.... I want the people of Eldonia smart except I don't want them using any automatic guns or anything better then a rough pistil.

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 28, 2009 14:49 Flag

It would be extremely odd if they did, wouldn't it? I figured that out long ago and forgot to mention it, besides there's only said that the Odeseans sell advanced weaponery.

Alexander Vervaet November 28, 2009 12:28 Flag

I don't think the Odeseans are selling there best weapons, America isn't selling nuclear warheads or B-2 bombers either.

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 28, 2009 12:24 Flag

Not entirely co-incidence...

Alexander Vervaet November 28, 2009 11:58 Flag

The Odesean Trading Company reminds me of the East Indian Trading Company.

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 19, 2009 16:24 Flag

Spices are luxeries. The Odeseans have colonies, remember.
And the advanced weapons will also be something the trading partners will like to see coming to their ports.

Max Schellenberg November 18, 2009 22:48 Flag

Luxeries?

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 18, 2009 14:29 Flag

In exchange for the Odesean luxeries, I think the dwarfs would love to see them come.

Max Schellenberg November 18, 2009 13:55 Flag

Interesting, I would think they would have good connections with the dwarfs for their technology, gold and gems.

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 17, 2009 17:50 Flag

The Odeseans are definitely human. But at the conquered borders there may by colonised other races. But keep in mind that they would be less important then the human population, socially and politically.

Max Schellenberg November 14, 2009 15:21 Flag

Interesting I like the idea, what race or races live there? I think I should tell you the story and history now so you can have a better idea of the past and where the future may lead.

Castaways

The Castaways are not really a nation, but more like a collective name given to various groups of people who are thrown out of societies and are technically outlaws. They live at the borders of wealthy nations and raid towns and cities if they are strong enough.
Castaways can be pirates, rebels and thieves. Or just people who were different and left, to be happier elsewhere.
Hermites are also considered castaways, although they weren't forced to live outside societeties. Most selfrespecting nations try to do something about it in a good and preventive way. Others, mainly kingdoms, don't, but send regularly armed groups the silence the little idiots.
Odeseans and other sea nations often hunt pirates.

Sounds good!

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde December 16, 2009 09:14 Flag

I didn't think about those, yes I suppose they will end as castaways.

Angela R. December 16, 2009 09:01 Flag

I suppose that any half-breeds may end up being castaways? If I remember correctly, all EldOnia races were supposed to be compatible on genetic terms...

Micaixia

Just a radom thought...

General
Micaixia has grown out of five or six smaller kingdoms of the dwarfs.
They were united by a charismatic king from the the largest kingdom by a combination of marriages and diplomacy. The build up a large trading imperium, the name of his empire was known for it's fine spices, expensive cloth, quality food and many other great luxuries, but beside luxuries they also exported things for the more common man and woman in the streets of neighboring states and countries.
But that time of wealth is long gone. The once shining cities are now mainly in ruins, the beautiful buildings and monuments are dirty and abandoned.
What happened? Climate changings and attacks from marauders.
The people live now in villages in the middle of the fields were they are trying to get their living from. And life is hard Micaixia.
There is still a king living in the old palace but he is unable to do much because he has no money.
The ordenary people aren't even aware anymore of the existance of their major country. Most don't even know they have a king. They listen to the local baron and there stops the political life of the everyday man.
The barons are holding all the power and the money.
The only reason Micaixia still exists is because people want to give the place a name.
The power of Micaixia is something for the bedtime stories and the books.

The big trading partners are not interested in Micaixia because there is nothing to get there, only the small traders pop in occasionally. This makes that Micaixia is getting isolated and forgotten.

This is a map of the West continent of eldOnia. Odeseum is magnified next to it. It is were Odeseum fits best I think. Feel free to move it.

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 20, 2009 15:58 Flag

That would be kinda unrealistic, not? ; )

Austin Luppowitz November 20, 2009 01:32 Flag

oh okay, i didn't think there were rivers

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 19, 2009 16:22 Flag

Besides my concept of borderlines is more like this (the Belgian coast is manmade by the way)
http://api.ning.com/files/0vjQar3eDhYaFaYvS127qOFV2qCHS37ImBxBVBF8oDo_/belgium.jpg
Not much real straight lines. When you look at an European country in close up you'll find my landborders (at least the original ones) more realistic

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 19, 2009 16:15 Flag

The original drawing was more like a real country, but it was a pencil drawing and by remaking it like it is up there, the nuances were lost.
The hole you are talking about is just a bay were once was the delta of a river, the water level changed and flooded it
as for the land borders most of them are rivers

Austin Luppowitz November 19, 2009 00:38 Flag

Thats cool, but you know that in most real countries they aren't shaped with a bunch of jagged edges like you made it look. I would have done the same thing though, but I think that the country would have more straight lines like todays countries. And also, for the map itself, the water would erode the land touching it so it wouldn't be as jagged there either (unless that hole was made by something like a meteor)

Gert-Jan Van de Voorde November 18, 2009 14:28 Flag

Great

Max Schellenberg November 18, 2009 13:58 Flag

Nice location, I think that suits them fine.
