News

I have to suggestiosn for writing News.

1) Add a comments section on the News, as well. Now I've had to add a new Task where people are asked to comment on the news, which seems unnecessarily clumsy.

2) Give us some formatting tools for the News. (Maybe for Tasks and Shots, as well.) Bold and Italics would help at least my project, since I frequently post quotations from a book that uses both.

Definitely!

These have been on the back of my head for months. I'm on to some other stuff right now, but both of your suggestions will be done eventually.

Polls

I don't know whether this has already been proposed in the past, but I was thinking that a poll feature would definitely add some great opportunities for production leaders to quickly find out how their members feel and think about certain matters. So in short: we should be able to create polls.

Yes, very good idea. I think we'll add that!

Thierry Gschwind November 12, 2008 21:40 Flag

Would also be great to have a pciture option, where the users can viote between the diiferent options, like when designing a costume, it couuld be directly seen what the diffrent costumes are.

Vesa Nieminen November 12, 2008 11:06 Flag

Good idea. For now you can use thumbs as a kind of poll. One person can vote for multiple shots, but atleast you can get a idea of how to community is feeling about it.

Stephan Krabbendam November 04, 2008 18:00 Flag

That would be even better ;)

So we can expect a poll feature in the near future?

Atte Joutsen November 04, 2008 17:45 Flag

Yes, this is a very good idea. I do not remember if actual polls have been suggested.

To extend this further, there could be a featured poll on the front page of WAM also. It could gather info for the improvement of WAM or be a part of some production. That could be a great way to get people interested in your production when you throw an interesting poll that ends up on the front page.

Commenting productions

Sometimes when you see a production which is interesting it would be nice to give a general comments and feedback for the production. Now it seems that most of the productions have very specific tasks and it is kind of stupid to throw general questions and stuff there.

One way would be to add a general discussion task to every production by default like Iron Sky have general ideas task.

Cool some productions took the hint and made general discussion tasks :)

General discussion about WAM is also ok, but I personally haven't really missed it. We have the WAM production here. But thinking things in broader sense it might be a good idea to have a forum where we could talk freely about film making, and technology related to film making and etc..

Atte Joutsen November 04, 2008 08:04 Flag

I'm for this one. In my opinion we need some place to discuss general matters of productions. I have encountered the same thing that there is a though or a question it my mind but there is no place to put it to. Then I usually write a private message to the production owner. I get my message through but the information exchange is only between two persons and not open to everyone.

I feel there is also need for a general discussion board for WAM. That could be a place for discussion about making films, activating the community, finding useful sites and services... That board could hold all the discussions that are very general or do not fit into the current productions.

I talked about this with Lare some time ago, and we came up with a method to use the WAM technology for that. We could set up a DISCUSSIONS project where tasks could be the general topic division on the board, the shots would start the discussion threads and the all the discussion would be going on in the comments.

How do you feel about this kind of arrangement?

Activating People

It is very important that we can get people activated. But for each film, It is impossible for us to do it for them. The leaders need some easy ways or at least some advice on how to promote activity on their film. The basic idea is:

1) Turn activity into an easy game that can be used by all production leaders
2) Provide an App that can be put on facebook that drives the game (perhaps based on specific tasks) viral. After all the best people to help you with a film is your friends. (Wreck My Movie- The game)

I am sure there are lots of other ideas people have but this is the one I think is needed. Simple idea. Get people who know you active.

Sorting for the people page

Hi,
how about a feature enabling the sorting of the people page http://www.wreckamovie.com/users

If the page could be sorted according to name location and different wreckupations, finding suitable people to your production could be easier. Inside productions there is already a sorting possibility for the member list, which is good. Maybe the location could also be sorted by using either country or city.

Flagged items - why?

When flagging an inappropriate item, there should be a notes field to enter what exactly seems/is wrong with it, so to make the moderator/administrator's job easier.

We don't have any inappropriate content (atleast yet) so this isn't high priority, but as a future addition this is a good idea.

Distributed Rendering

Has this been looked into at all?
You all know seti@home - and some know folding@home - but fewer know there's an entire network and software dedicated for sharing idle machines for a common project.
Like asteroid trajectories, cancer research or chess moves - so why not film production?
After cancer and total annihilation of mankind, isn't culture the next Important Thing? ;)
There's always need for more rendering power.
But not "always".
In a production there's sometimes a time when your render machine/farm is standing idle.
So I suggest a share-based system.. you let others render while your machine is idle, and render yourself when you need it - rendering priority within the cloud set according to user render-share ratio.

I would let my PC run whole night to render for you guys if that was possible. Great idea!

Vesa Nieminen August 07, 2008 05:38 Flag

We have talked with the BURP guys. I haven't met them but maybe Lare or Timo could shed some light on the distributed rendering subject?

paavo happonen August 06, 2008 11:58 Flag

here's one active project for this, in alpha stage;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BURP
currently supports only blender renderer
also, only accepts non-commercial renders for now

Ranking of productions by phase

Once WAM will be opened, there will be productions listed in all possible phases of production: initial ideas, developing ideas, script writing, production planning, financing, casting, shooting, post-production, complete...

There should be some ranking and/or indicators of the actual phase each production is in, so one could easily get an overview of what to expect of each project. Then all projects could be browsed by category and one could more easily select productions fitting one's interests and skills. One general rank of "phase" should do most often, but perhaps there should also be additional indicators for more detailed status information, as all projects don't follow the same path of advance, (Say, some project may have finance very early; some may have fixed cast early or no casting required at all; some have free studio or otherwise certain shooting place/equipment etc.)

This ranking should be based on the actual phase of production. As the producer and the director are the ones responsible for fulfilling all phases, updating the "production phase" indicator should be up to them.

--------------
Also, it should be possible to categorize productions in different phases at the front page, because there will most likely be tons of "idea" phase productions in comparison to those in late phases, and the more serious ones will soon be drowned by the many "ideas", unless this is possible.

I agree, these are very good points. I will add something like this to the list of things we need to work on. Thanks a *lot*. Very good, sir.

Digg a Shot

I'd like to see the ability to "digg" (vote for) shots that you like, like on digg.com. In some of the Iron Sky tasks, there are pages, and pages of shots. Allowing users to sort by most popular would bring the cream quickly to the surface.

And as you can see it is released now :)

Vesa Nieminen July 14, 2008 10:38 Flag

We are actually currently working on this. Going to be released soon.

Oskar Lönnberg July 11, 2008 07:39 Flag

I vote for this :)

This is a great idea - this would solve problems with huge amount of shots. I hope somebody would solve this soon

Online Casting

I'm currently Casting for 'Untitled Dystopia', shifting through the 90 or so emails in my inbox and it would be quite useful to be able to have a platform where I could show members of the production the head shots and showreels to get their input.

saying that however, It does seem like the sort of thing that should only be done behind closed doors, of course you wouldnt want you dicussion to get back to any of the actors.

discuss?

Casting tools have been in discussions (among others), but I think they are going to be added in some later phase. The idea would be that the director/produced could write a general invitation for the actors to participate in casting and WAM would send the invitation to the wreckers who have marked themselves as being actors. The actor would find the invitation in their personal message box in WAM and go to the casting page where there would be all the info needed for the actors.

Then what happens can be two things: 1) they could accept the invitation and sign up to an on-location casting session where they would go through the usual casting routine. 2) Another idea would be that they could go through the casting tasks and film that using a webcam and upload their stuff in WAM, where the directors and producers could see that and use it for decision making.
