Add subproductions

It could be useful to have subproductions in a production, or to link productions one with each other. For example, scenes could be subproductions of a film. Or short films could be subproductions of a compilation of short films.

It would allow to work with "kinda" modules, and it would be easier to sort and read the tasks.

Oh, I thought I was in the "re-branding the platform". Sure I'll do it.

Kalle Max Hofmann January 27, 2012 11:18 Flag

we have talked about optimising WaM for actual production needs, but at the current state, the participation is way too low to justify this... and I think that subproductions and linking would make everything even more complicated.

However, there is already the option to create "groups" in a production, which can be used to only work on certain things with certain people. But as I said, mostly this isn't even necessary because there's not enough active participants.

Of course overally you're right, that something has to be done to make operating the site easier and clearer. See the "re-branding the platform" task for this and submit your ideas =)

Having (at least) a Copyleft license available

I juste discovered wreckamovie, and find it really awesome.

Though, I'm in free arts and free softwares for many years, now, and I was first astonished and a bit disappointed by the fact that most project were in "All rights reserved" license, even if they will be diffused as CC-by-sa (for example) later on.
I finally understood the reason when I sax there were only three licenses available, two of them being free, but not copylefted (so no obligation for derivative works to keep free), and on which is not free.

I would suggest to add two other copylefted licences, like:
- CC-by-sa-nc for those who doesn't want any commercial use of their art,
- Free Art License for those who looks for strict copyleft

By the way, it's also a bit annoying not to know what version of the CC license we're signing for (in France, CC-3.0 is really problematic).

Ahem, no. The point is that without the sa clause, or without any copyleft license, it isn't possible to share the content easily.
It's not a matter of commercial use or not, it's just a matter of how do you want to share and diffuse the art.

Actually, as a musician, I'm working on a project which allow musicians to get the sources of other musicians. That way, they collabore very much easily. This is possible because the license are of kind Free Art License or CC-by-sa or CC-by-sa-nc.
The CC-by and CC-by-sa here doesn't guarantee that the final content will be free. With such license, you can make all rights reserved things. With copyleft license, you can't.
I find it a bit sad to choose All Rights Reserved, in order not to allow someone to close my art in the future. A copyleft license would avoid that.

Thierry Gschwind January 27, 2012 11:19 Flag

That licencing stuff only comes into account, when money is involved.

ORL January 27, 2012 10:15 Flag

I finally arrived to the same conclusion, but though it first made me ask if I had all understood about this place!

Kalle Max Hofmann January 27, 2012 09:41 Flag

You are right, it would be good to have all kinds of licenses in the selection - and also pretty easy to implemenent I think ;D

However, I wouldn't over-rate the importance. Even though many productions here display "all rights reserved", no one is looking to make a big profit or turn into Disney ;-)

Using HTML5 video markup

As a non-flash user, I'm not able to see most of the preview on WAM, including the "howto"!

I would suggest to think about including html5 video markup added to or instead of flash.

Wreckamovie en español

For some reason, there are a lotta mainly Spanish language productions at WAM.

I have lived in Madrid, and even university students there struggle with English. Heck, some international politics professors don't even speak any English.

So it would make sense to offer a dedicated spanish site. I realize the lingua franca is still English, but it would help many productions to have the option between these two languages. For now.

The translation of the WAM site would be a production in itself, and a quick one at that.

An IM for each production.

An IM like they have in Facebook would be an awesome add-on for discussing with the other online team members of the same production. What do you guys think?

Overloaded mode

I have lots of work to do and I can't note any tasks that might intrest you or new projects. I have already enough work to do. Could you make a setting to WAM so that I could ignore those messages.

True. Very smart. ;)

Daniel Saarimäki April 09, 2011 18:46 Flag

I would still want those new comment and new shot notifications. They are useful :)

Angela R. April 09, 2011 18:10 Flag

Handy... just a "switch off all notifications" checkbox somewhere in the user page could be of help indeed.

language option

I suggest Wreck a Movie to have language option for non English speaking people on the HOME page of the website.
From my part, I offer myself to translate it in to Brazilian Portuguese.

Yeah, I've been also asking about this, but I suppose not many people feel the necessity for "localized" versions as we do... :/

Contests where you can make €$

Maybe a separate tab for this?

Something for anyone to post relevant short-film contests where money and/or awards can be made.

I got the idea from watching the following video, and thought that the various producers on wreckamovie might want a chance to make some cash for their productions, especially on short-films like this:

Deadline: 28 Feb 2011
Prizes: $1000-$7000

It would be interesting to have access to a smart calendar of all festivals too.
I have joined withoutabox.com where there are many opportunities, but their layout and organisation sucks.
I would want something simpler and more structured, something that is easy searchable and browseable depending on your current film production.

Guide text

Many people come here, add their production and wonder why nobody helps them. They don't usually know that they should help other people to get help for their project. That's what WAM is about. You should add something to note new people about that.

Yup. A really short (2 mins or so) punchy video would probably be what most people would bother to actually view and take notice of.

A lot of people "get it" once they've had someone pointing them in the right direction, so that's what the video would aim to do.

Angela R. January 16, 2011 15:34 Flag

Yeah, I believe this is one of the things that were discussed at Assembly. Educating users would boost the community greatly, as it would produce Wreckers who are more enthusiastic and more aware of how to help each other...

One of the ideas that arose back then was to put a short, version-neutral (so it does not need to be changed as WAM evolves), video on front page to demonstrate the WAM community concept in style of the "RSA Animate - Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc

Personally, I have mixed feelings about guide texts because a lot of people are not very keen on reading and it may risk becoming outdated in case of a WAM update. But this is simply a personal opinion, of course. ;)

A place for general talk?

Maybe I am blind or I forgot this one already exists?

I mean, we have some very nice tasks within the Wreckamovie Production, where people can discuss how to improve the platform itself.

But where should someone write when they have a general question about film-making they would like to be answered, before / without necessarily creating an own production container?

For example, someone pondering whether to start a project but without experience may wish to post a little shot about it, asking for feedback / interest to see if it is worth creating the project at all.

Basically, I feel we could benefit from a place to brainstorm about what we would like to do / what can be done on WAM and at the same time also ask practical question to the community (e.g. which video editing / scripting programs is everybody using? Any tips to best shoot a night scene?)

Sorry to re-open an older topic but I was away from WAM for a bit and am still catching up on my "MyWreck".

This sounds like a good idea, maybe someone should just start a production intended for general brainstorming and film-making advice?

(I think someone tried to do something similar a very long time ago (early 2009?) but that's sort of been forgotten.)

Sami Laulajainen November 15, 2010 13:15 Flag

Yes. And gather those moneymaking, film sharing tips from other productions into one place -> A toolkit, if you will.
