Description

A place for me to add concept art that you can comment on.

If you make any concept art for this movie that you want to share with me, feel free to upload it here.

City_koncept.png is a concept drawing of Earth society. The photo of the drawing is a bit blurry, but most signs tells you to buy stuff and one sign in the background says "War is peace, consuming is freedom".

Thank you. I think I will follow your recommendations, they make a lot of sense. Though I can't give you a bigger version, I did this as quick as I could in the size it would be as a production poster. (No scanner was involved, just GIMP and a Wacom tablet.)

I am pretty sure that the alien pin-up I had before gave people the wrong impression of this project and that it scared some away. So I finally decided that I had to get rid of it. Thus this ultra quick poster, just to get it done...

Nice art, and a nice slogan. I love the colors you've used. It has an unusual, but well-working composition..

I'd remove the eyes on the upper right. The handwriting is cool and airy, and it needs some space to 'breathe'. So try how it seems without the eyes and the white 'Do we?'

Also, i'd post the poster in higher definition. Now it's just pretty small, and all posters have to work in at least A3 size. Just scan it at higher definion (like 1200 dpi, which is heavy for the cpu but real high def) and then save it as 42*29,7 cm at 300 dpi, or 3508*4961 pixels.)

okay...

I am afraid not. I did this as quick as I could in the size it would be as a production poster.

Nice! Soooooooo nice!

"Do we care?" That's good one!

Really well painted! Don't you have that in bigger size?

The Alien

I am going for an androgynous look. Please tell me if I am succeeding?

The first image:
The legs and hands still need a lot of work. I just don't know about the colouring...

The second image:
A few details fixed, most notably the legs. They are getting close to what they should look like. It looks like it's out of balance now though, I will fix that later.

Yes and no. :) The reptilian colors on a feline look DO strike. But I completely understand the point of making such things contrast each other on an alien, as I said in my comment. :) I was just merely wondering if this was something you had done on purpose, or came randomly, and just how much you wanted to provoke the audience with "uncomfortable" matches of this kind.

To summarize, my concern is that an average audience may not be able to go beyond the instinctive feeling that a green feline is "wrong" on earth, and give a bad review of your whole productions because of this kind of menial details. :(

But if you are doing it on purpose, then I shall be the first supporting your decision since, as you rightly said, this is an alien creature hence it does not necessary need to follow any rules that apply to creatures on earth. Again - I was merely rising a question. :)

Let me see if I understood correctly, it feels strange because of the feline look with reptilian skin?

Isn't that a good thing? It's an Extra Terrestial Alien, and before you get to know it is supposed to feel like an alien not from this world. Two associations of the look of the Alien that doesn't quite mix the way you describe it would only add to that, or am I misunderstanding you?

Angela R. November 19, 2009 09:27 Flag

Concerning the coloring, I must ask, are you aiming for a reptilian look? In this case, green is probably the best way to go. Personally however, since the face and tail of this toon make me think of some kind of feline alien, I would rather associate it to a furry skin/mane in warm tones of orange, pink or brown. If the skin is meant to be smooth instead, shades of grey or a very pale pink (think of the skins of dolphins and a number of see creatures) is probably the way to go in order for the audience to get the "right feel" of it. Then of course, there are the "flashy" colors such as yellow, blue and purple which would probably make the audience think of a bird/feathers.

And yes, I do realize that these are aliens and their colors could be completely different. But since you probably won't be explaining too many details, perhaps it would be easier to aide imagination with recognizable elements from our world? Just my two cents, of course. Your production and your decision. :)

I am not a good drawer. No underwear fit in me.

(Drawer = A retractable box in a piece of furniture, called a chest of drawers, where one usually keep clothing and stuff you never use.)

But thanks!

Daniel Saarimäki October 22, 2009 12:20 Flag

Ok.

(I'm quite good drawer but you are MUCH better)

David Jansson October 21, 2009 10:27 Flag

Not a good drawer? I will remember that when I need to store my underwear.

Silliness aside. The legs and hands do need work. Remember that they need to work from more than one perspective and in more than one pose. The shape of the feet are simply not done, but if you analyse the right leg of the alien you realize that the joints must be twisted in a very unnatural way. I could of course explain it away with that it is an Alien with an Alien physiology, but I rather want to draw an Alien that could actually walk...

Daniel Saarimäki October 21, 2009 08:29 Flag

That looks pritty much perfect.

Legs and hands seem fine but if you think they need work, they need work :) Colouring is good. That's typical alien colour and those eyes look good!

I'm not a good drawer and I'm just as bad to say something about others drawings so...

The woman

This shot is for concept art of the woman protagonist.

First image:
I am not used to drawing women with normal body types, which is kind of silly of me I guess. Her having a normal body is a big part of the main point I am trying to make with this movie. I am not happy with her face yet...

Second image:
Computerized, some details fixed and new face. I think the next step (other than designing the rest of the characters) is to learn to draw these characters from different angles doing more things than just standing.

Do you think that her general look work with the character description?

The woman:
Chosen by the alien, who realizes that the representative of the government is unlikely to understand or handle the shape of intergalactic culture in the open galactic net. She i considered to be a deviant by her peers, chosing not to see the beauty surgeon despite being slightly overweight and thus standing out from the epitome of beauty as defined by the entertainment industry. Her grandfather was part of the Open source "movement". She is intelligent and strong willed, and as all intelligent and strong willed individuals in a rigid society she has this nagging feeling that there must be more to existence than everyday life of Earth society. She has few friends and works as a billboard designer. As would be expected she is doubtfull about embarking on a journey that although only a short time will pass for her near the speed of light will mean that a hundred years have passed when she returns. Goaded by her grandfather to seize the moment she eventually accepts.
