Closing Note

So!

We have published our teaser poster now. Check it out below, and read more at http://ninjatroppen.montages.no/1356

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion in this task!

For the final poster, we opted to continue our streak of the "forbidding" weapons collage that was introduced on our website (http://ninjatroppen.no) a while ago.

Description

Okay, wreckers.

As we are delving into the graphic design process with more force, here's a fun task for you all.

1) Throw us examples of the best TEASER posters you've ever seen.
For any movie, in any genre. You can post a link directly to an image file, and the WAM elves should display it correctly (or we will beat them up)

2) Answer the following question: why does it work?

I'll start:

...because it keeps it really simple, daring to rely solely on the film series' most important icon, and the black background connotes a sense of pure evil.

Worst Case Scenario

...because it had effin nazi cyborg zombie mutants on it!

Damn, this Dutch movie could have been so awesome... If only they didn't run out of money. Død Snø wasn't much solace, since other than featuring nazi zombies it was a quite featureless run-of-the-mill party flick. In my opinion, that is, of course.

Aww man! ..i just got really excited until i suddenly remembered the project was cancelled! ;( Having been a follower for a long time, this is the movie i secretly rooted for while the whole 'død snø' ruckus was goin on!
- too bad we'll never know how this one could have turned out..

But dont get me wrong, 'død snø' is no fluke! And I really dig it! ;D
so, lets warm up for winter/easter vecation with some zombie action, courtesy of 'død snø' or 'shockwaves' :D

TAPETRVE the Void February 01, 2010 12:26 Flag

Right. You can't argue or negotiate with **nazi cyborg zombie mutants**.

Thierry Gschwind January 31, 2010 21:51 Flag

*I don't get the "only good German is a living German" thing though? *

In older day phrases like "Only a dead indian/nigger/jew/etc is a good indian/nigger/jew/etc" were used.

In this case living Germans are nicer than thoses zombies which are dead.

Eric Vogel January 31, 2010 21:46 Flag

Thanks for reminding us about Worst Case Scenario. Too bad the project fell apart and won't get made...!

On this poster I think they crammed too much text on top of an awesome image. Apart from that, the title plays really well with the striking image. I don't get the "only good German is a living German" thing though?

Posters for Post Production - Ninja Taxi

Found a few interresting points or elements, and connected the dots
with my own mental magic marker (sharpie).

Made this 'teaser' or whatever we should call it. Whats that?
You think it looks familiar somehow!? Let me break this down as we go..

BELOW: PST's famous undercover surveillance photos of Treholt in Wienna, 1983.

BELOW: First (windows/paint) draft of the norwegian ninja/taxi driver poster mash-up.
CENTER/RIGHT: Original poster for 'Taxi Driver'..

Enjoy!

Agreed, I concur! Just a fun idea, cool finding similarities/connections between wellknown images like these ;) (just tag these under the mash-up/what-if category!)

Eric Vogel November 19, 2009 23:11 Flag

Ha! Nice.
To critique the idea a little: how many will "get" it?
Still cool.

Heh, the "Over The Top" one has something we've already been debating a little: if we do a collage of images, should it be done technically poor (as in eighties cut-n-paste)? Jury's still out.

The Spirit one has a nice optical illusion, but it's perhaps a little off-putting overall? Doesn't have that "wow" factor in my eyes.

Teaser Pleasers

Just to comment on the obvious in regard to the FR13 poster..
-the releasedate?! But ofcourse we all knew that, just felt it needed pointing out..

1. Exhibits A. B. and C. (Teasers/Posters for THE ROAD).

A.

B.

C.

2. Comments

A. The first teaser for John Hillcoat's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's awardwinning novel, THE ROAD. (He won a Pulitzer for this one!)
This poster really works, because it paints a bleak image or hints of a post apocalyptic/distraught future (with the trees)
And it shows a well, its pretty much what it is.. A road.
Whats great about it, is that it leaves alot up to the viewer's own imagination..

B. (Not really a teaser, but an alternate for the official poster)
Works for most of the same reasons as mentioned above.

C. The final and official poster for THE ROAD.

BONUS Supplements: (The HIGHLY anticipated INDY 4 Teaser!)

I think the Treholt icons are pretty strong, albeit hard to identify.
And the mystery around his person and the case is one of these..
(The most important element about this film!)

Also being in my thirties, I think most persons (in norway) over the age of 25, have a distinct impression of Treholt and the Treholt-case.
Younger people probably know less, but might be able to point out the man in the suit with the big glasses and graying hair as Arne Treholt.

So to answer your question 'if it even matters' I would say NO.
Things that make you go.. "heey? whats this?!" and google it, or look it up on wikipedia for reference.. Essentially finds it's own-kind-of segment.

Media is constantly refreshing(?!) our impression/memory of the case, by pumping fresh blood into the case - in the form of books, articles and photos aswell as newscoverage.
The latest of these being the 'new/unpublished' evidence just released by PST on facebook, flicker and the mainstream media.

Even though, probably a far shot.. I believe that eventually - this production will spark or incite a new, more open discussion/debate on the Treholt-Case.. On what really happened, political motives and on who were involved.

God bless Sci-fact!
or to quote C-3P0: "Thank the maker!"

Good series of examples. Those posters for The Road show a dramaturgic development from the first to the last. Very clever, and something I would love us to do for NN. That is, create some form of visual "story" growing through the teaser (in several stages?) to the final poster. Also in other media, perhaps.

The Indy one is another example of relying on the audience's previous knowledge of the brand, down to the font for the release date. Talk about screen icons...

Without direct comparison it begs several questions:

How strong are the Treholt icons (from real life) in today's audiences?
What's the age cut-off for people who know about the case and the man? Being in my mid thirties I remember well the arrest, the newspaper headlines etc. from 1984-85, but I don't have the impresson that 20-somethings today know too much... Does it even matter?

Godfather

This is another classic, perhaps a silhouette of Treholt and his glasses? The whole point of ninjas is you cannot see them, right?

Yes, this is great. It plays on our previous knowledge of the story and links the new movie with the old trilogy.

Good point!
Kommandør Treholt: Mission to Moscow?! Haha.

Kalle Max Hofmann September 17, 2009 18:44 Flag

Erm... Regarding the question "why does it work": This Bourne teaser poster is only cool because it tells the fans of the previous films that this time, Bourne is coming back to the US to kick the butts of those who betrayed him!

So for Norwegian Ninja, this would only work for part two with Moscow in the background... I think ^_^

Dark dark dark dark

... because it's sinister, excelling in the art of showing without showing: It's the Joker, but what does he really look like? Blood... but from whom? Why is he writing that?
And why can't I see this movie NOW!?

Insanely effective. Put it on my desktop before the movie was out, and it stayed there for over a year.

YES. This works sooo well "the art of showing without showing".
Central to having a good teaser.
