There are so many cool events happening all over the world that it's really tough to figure out which ones we should have somebody from the the Wreckamovie team attend.
Let us know what events you think we should attend and why. And remember that no event is too big or too small, there are other reasons it makes sense to go or not go.
Would be good to have the shots in the following format:
Event name, location, date and then description and reason we should be there, like this:
SXSW, Austin, TX, USA, March 12 - 21 2010
and let's include url in description as well http://sxsw.com
It is not the biggest event ever... but it is nearby (literally around the corner) so I would have to be ashamed of myself if I did not go and spread the word about WAM!
During the last ten years, Future Film Festival has become the most significant Italian event dedicated to animation and special effects. A preview of the future, but not only: Future Film Festival dedicates retrospectives to the history of animated cinema and sci-fi, as well as meetings and events about new technologies applications to other fields, like web and videogames.
All of which completely relevant to WAM.
Obviously, speaking Italian, I hereby volunteer to attend on behalf of the community... preferably with some support, but still, I would be very willing to try on my own if I were to be granted permission to do so.
Italy, Venice/Lido di Venezia, September 1 - 11, 2010
Why: It is international, and it is artsy. Furthermore, there are THREE Art Schools in the city. A very good place to be for many different reasons, from gathering new wreckers to alerting the public's sensitivity on WAM's righteous cause.
As a bonus, I should be in Italy just those days! Since it is my hometown, I would be able (and very willing) to tag along as a translator. Not to mention I could help arranging accommodations, pull strings with friends & connections to both the local schools & the local media, etc etc.
Sadly I am going to be stuck in the Netherlands due to personal reasons, so I will have to miss this one. But there are a number of other Italian movie events (even indie ones) which may be worth attending.
Not officially as an entity/group, I fear, unless it involves promoting the Star Wreck movie. WAM and the current productions on their own would be most likely be deemed OT. Although that doesn't mean some of my friends may not wish to join in the fun and "make presence" wearing Trek costumes, for example. What I mean is, if the WAM representative there had a following group of Trekkies... there'd be room to talk about Star Wreck and from there about the rest.
But I would not count on that, to be honest. As this would be more about film-making in general than about Star Trek or even science-fiction, no matter how coincidentally related the subjects may be, the chance they would travel all the way to Venice to support such activity is probably rather small...
Yeah, I was thinking of the same. Anyhow, I've got a telephone appointment scheduled tonight with one of those people I mentioned (freelance journalist writing amongst others the movie reviews on a local newspaper), and looking forward to hear their feedback about this all. :)
Could be doable. I think the best would be to take the "wrecking by walking around" approach, ie not have a big setup, but just be there. And also organize some meetup for wreckers who happen to be around. A bit like what is being done for Berlin right now.
I ought to say, most of the festival focuses on big Hollywood movies or very posh & artsy stuff.
However... it is my personal feeling that low-budget film-making would both surprise and interest people if we were able to present it as an innovative, effective and realistic new trend. It would mostly be a challenge to ensure that the local media are alerted in advance, so that they come and look for us. Which should not be too difficult, as being Italian, I know people who may know people... and I expect that many may literally jump at the chance to write an article about something different from all the others.
Now, I am not sure at all what it would take (technically and economically) to set-up a physical presence there, or whether just walking around with a camera / WAM shirt and folders and "give interview and explanations to previously contacted people hoping this leads more to follow" may work on its own, but I intend to ring a couple of people I know who go there for their work, and see what they think about it / ask their advice on what the best approach may be. Stay tuned!
Hannu Hoffrén and me will also be there, courtesy of renderfarm.fi :D
On Saturday at 3pm, we'll be giving a little insight into wrecking Snowblind and making some announcments towards Vampyre Princess 3D:

AFI FEST 2010 presented by Audi will be held November 4 - 11, 2010 in Hollywood, California at the historic Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Mann Chinese 6 at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. AFI FEST is the longest-running international film festival in Los Angeles.
Each fall, AFI FEST presents the year's most significant films. Kicking off the awards season each year, AFI FEST offers a crucial avenue of exposure to the entertainment community. Featuring international work from emerging filmmakers, global showcases of films from the great masters and red-carpet gala premieres, AFI FEST brings the very best of world cinema to the city of Los Angeles, the film capital of the world. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes AFI FEST as a qualifying festival for the Short Films category of the annual Academy Awards. And AFI FEST presented by Audi is still the only film festival in the United States to hold the prestigious FIAPF accreditation (www.FIAPF.org), assuring a high standard of quality and reliability for the international film community.
AFI FEST 2009 presented by Audi celebrated its 23rd year with the theme "SEE A FILM ON US" by offering free tickets to all of the screenings. The festival enjoyed record attendance, as audiences turned out in force to attend films and special events. Programming highlights from AFI FEST 2009 presented by Audi included seven consecutive nights of galas and tributes, including FANTASTIC MR FOX, PRECIOUS, THE MESSENGER, A SINGLE MAN, THE ROAD and a 50th Anniversary digitally re-mastered presentation of Alfred Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST; tributes to Viggo Mortensen and Christopher Plummer, the latter featuring a screening of THE LAST STATION; red carpet appearances by Wes Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Angela Bassett, Kate Beckinsale, Nicolas Cage, Lee Daniels, Julie Delpy, Robert De Niro, Colin Firth, Tom Ford, Terry Gilliam, Woody Harrelson, Werner Herzog, Martin Landau, Julianne Moore, Mo'Nique, Bill Murray, Tyler Perry, Eva Marie Saint, Jason Schwartzman, Charlize Theron and Oprah Winfrey; and access to the AFI DigiFest new media conference.
The American Film Market (AFM), November 3 - 10, 2010 is the market partner of AFI FEST. Since its formation in 2004, this strategic partnership has grown into the largest gathering of film professionals in North America. The association between the two events connects art and commerce, broadening the opportunities for all participants.
Simply put, this is THE comic convention, as well as the largest popular culture convention in North America, and possibly the world. It may be too late for this year- as many of the hotels in the area were booked even before the start of 2010, but next year...
Will do. I better order some new toner cartridges right away! I really ought to bill you. But you can show your gratitude by brainstorming and holding up your end of the conversation on my production 'Rogue Earth'.
I've read the news that WAM won at the World Summit Award in July... Now I found a video from the WSA concerning WAM dated 28th of August... What's this? Another award next year?
The award ceremony took place later, that's probably why. We didn't go to the ceremony as it was one of these "come collect your award, pay for your own trip to Mexico" kind of deals. Can't afford to win too many of those;-) Hopefully we'll get something to put on the wall in the mail...
A little too late to go this year as the event is full, but it's currently one of the largest gaming events in the world. I know someone who is doing some work there this year - I can discuss what we're able to do with them.
While PAX is mostly gaming specific, there's a lot of desire to create independent film, and a general DIY attitude to the event. If Iron Sky or Snowblind are finished in time, we could possibly have a screening, and then explain the processes involved in making it and such.
Oh sorry, I should've put my glasses on before posting ;-) No of course, in September 2010 Snowblind will long be finished! So let's go there... I'm a videogame guy anyway :D
