Description

This task is for those who have knowledge of modern warfare armament! Be imaginative, but also realistic!

As you might have guessed, it's not just Nazis in the film that have some iron in the sky - also something we call "Earth Fleet" exists, and we want you to come up with great ideas on the arms and armors of the Earth fleet ships.

What I need is something that exists, or could exist in 10 years. We are mostly looking for very effective projectile weaponry and missiles, but I'm also interested on hearing some alternate, more advanced weapon ideas.

Something, that would be very destructive in space!

Ok, that's it! Let's see what you got!

Modern tactical thermonuclear weapons

According to an article by Janes there is development of creating tactical fusion weapons, in which nano technology can be used for miniaturization. Having a fusion bomb go off without the help of a fission material to start it to get the temperature up, is what seem to be the main idea.

Scary stuff imo, because "clean" nuclear weapons will be used quite often I fear.

http://www.janes.com/security/international_security/news/jcbw/jcbw030115_1_n.shtml

Suggested weapons:
- Missle warheads
- Mines
- Self destruct explosive charge
- Large projectiles, perhaps too comical though

I think Tuomas hits on a really great theme - for all the marvels of modern warfare - most of it's genius has been in deterrence... WWII technology - analog - technology that used individuals as it's agents rather than digital chimeras, might be capable of defeating a superior force in a mockingly sustained manner... So long as they posses a 1) secret base (ie. on the moon) and 2) superior 'get away' technology (ie. UFOs)...

Dag Øivind Undseth November 18, 2008 09:18 Flag

It never occurred to me until recently, that antimatter might be what will perhaps be the trigger device for possible fusion bombs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimatter_catalyzed_nuclear_pulse_propulsion
http://www.physorg.com/news146160767.html

So I am thinking about lasers somehow magically spawning antimatter particles triggering a chain reaction inside the fusion fuel, or perhaps being able to make use of contained antimatter particles already placed inside the fuel, in fusion bomb munitions.

Richard Tretzel August 16, 2008 08:33 Flag

a nuclear chain reaction produces vast amounts of energy- you only have to focus it.
maybe something like in anti-tank weapons, the explosion is focused in one spot by a parabolic arrangement, thus "welding" through the hull.
earth fleet could find a way to modify existing technology to do this.

Oliver Ulm August 15, 2008 10:35 Flag

The radiation and electromagnetic waves emitted by a nuke still would do a great job at frying electronics, but as has already been stated: the most destructive force lies in the shockwave which is non existant in the vacuum.

Tuomas Perttula July 16, 2008 07:49 Flag

There will be little or no EMPs in space. It needs stuff around the explosion (air) and magnetic field, both of witch are in shortage in space... And i don't know how nazi technology based around radio technology of 40's (vacuum tubes and stuff...) will be affected by EMPs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse

Havanacus July 16, 2008 01:17 Flag

Tuomas, there's always the EMP... That being said, you might also knock out the power to the Earth Fleet as well...

Tuomas Perttula July 15, 2008 21:18 Flag

I don't know if nuclear weapons are that effective in space. As there's no air, there isn't any shockwaves either. So to be effective, you would need to actually hit the enemy ship, and in that case nuclear weapons would simply be overkill.

How about nuclear fragmentation grenade...

Ghost soldiers

I spotted this article about all wacky US Army technology in development:

http://gizmodo.com/5077240/us-army-to-push-x+files-tech-development-invade-world-of-warcraft

Wild ideas like regenerating body parts, telepathy and erasing memories, but the funniest thing was the ghost soldiers. They were using term "quantum ghost imaging" what ever that means. But the idea of an photo realistic holographic image of a soldier controlled with some kind of artificial intelligence implementation is über cool.

Can't stop imaging situations were the Nazies shoot enemy troops and some of them die but huge amount them just stand there not noticing anything. Or you set a couple of these as fake guards and somebody tries to hit them from behind and they just stumble on thin air.

Reminds me of the famous incident whereby WWII's,
Battle of the Bulge was staged. Allied tanks, woefully
outrunning there own oil supplies bluffed German
columns into surrender by their 'show of force' alone.
The perfect weapon.

Similarly, I would think MooNazis 'invasion' would work more as a simultaneous, international coup. As modernity's individuals more and more imitate the king with all the imaginable luxuries of comfort and omniscience, so can MooNazis rule live and direct where it counts - the couch, the desk, the dining room, the town square... wherever information is digitally decimated. Where once armies could not conquer peoples because a capital does not a country make, perhaps a small force of MooNazis can control entire populations through concentrated misinformation alone?
?
??
The 'ghosts' show
Overwhelming Force as an Illusory Proximity Mine...
Democracy's Ghost Soldiers = 'Goliaths' (?)
Can there be more than one Goliath?
I could see such a project classified as 'Golgotha.'
Might not work to attack, but sure might work to defend...

no lasers

please no laser guns cause those wont be there in ten years...they could make one of those orbital laser strike things (which could be cool...like in akira in case people dont know what i mean) but as for guns just bullets...slightly more advanced version of assault rifles that we have allready (and if there are going to be rebels or such...the would probably still ahve ak-47's...since that gun will still be one of the best, even after being around for 60 years+)
so please (at least for the earth people...perhaps the nazis would have lasers since they've just been working on taking over the world for 70 years) no laser guns, it would make the movie too fake i think

biological weapons

1.-We know smallpox was erradicated on earth and only a few countries have samples for studying purposes, but if the nazis when to the moon long before the erradication end took with them some of their scientists is obvious they have samples of smallpox. They didn`t attacked the earth because they better waited, because in a world free of samllpox, the new generations are not being vaccinated adn therefore the spread of the disease would be fast, not giving time to the world healt services to react.

Advanced vs Outnumbered

The Nazis will certainly be outnumbered...

So, the Earth Fleet cannot be too good. The Nazis will have to rely on elitism to succeed. If the Earth Fleet is able to fight back at the Nazis, there can't be a fight, so most of the ideas here should in fact be used for the Nazis instead.

Oh, and, try not to make everything end with a Deus Ex Machina like in Independence Day or War of the Worlds, that would not be nice.

Okay. This is where a lot of mis-information can be useful.
----------

Microwaves would cook people from the inside out, put a raw egg, in the shell, in a microwave and see what happens.

----------

I don't think we'd be up to materilisation and dematerilisation in the time frame of Iron Sky. I think a form of cloaking would be available.

----------

Mind control technology based on rays... why do you think I wear an aluminium foil hat?

Seriously though, there was a movie with this premise, and it wasn't really believable.

----------

Tesla energy has the ability to disrupt normal electrical equipment. If you run electrons over the skin of a saucer shaped object you will get lift. However normal electricity generation is too heavy, tesla energy is transmitable.

So when a flying saucer flys over a car the car loses electrical power.

--------------

I have plenty more tripe like this to share ;-)

PHaSR

As I imagine Earth's technology much more stylish than the Nazi's, the PHASR-Rifle could fit in very well as a future heavy firearm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PHASR

That is dangerous looking toy. If somebody would be armed something like that I would run. This is absolutely cool and it is really futuristic :)

Coil and rail guns

I don't know if anyone has already suggested this, but railguns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun) and coilguns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coilgun) might be a good way to arm earth forces if looking for projectile weapons. Both use magnetic acceleration as a basis and would be possible to build even with today's technology.

A rail gun would be one of the few weapons, which actually might work properly in space.

Imagine a very large barrelled rail gun, accellerating a massive rod of tungsten carbide to several thousand km per second.

I really, really like the idea...

Jykke October 12, 2008 07:11 Flag

It's just the thing I also had in mind. Railguns would be kick-ass weapons in space. Imagine a nazi space ship colliding with a massive high-speed projectile.

Modern US Weaponry

I made a checkup what is currently in development for US infantry, as I believe that in 10 years, most of the army is going to use weapons currently in development and not just leap into sci-fi weaponry, that is for the nazis to do.

XM29 OICW Assault rifle / grenade launcher is now suspended project but very interesting weapon indeed, this weapon project was split into XM8 Assault rifle and XM25 Grenade launcher later on and is now abandoned as whole.

http://world.guns.ru/assault/as40-e.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OICW

XM8:
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as61-e.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM8_rifle

XM25:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM25
http://world.guns.ru/grenade/gl13-e.htm

FN SCAR:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SCAR

Other heavy duty weapons are:
Mk 47:
http://world.guns.ru/grenade/gl23-e.htm
XM307:
http://world.guns.ru/grenade/gl24-e.htm
(this weapon is actually abandonned project, replaced by XM312)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM312

It's pretty obvious to see that all cool weapons end up being buried and all old and simple weapons work.

However, i found this site to be very interesting info package about firearms in general: http://world.guns.ru/

Plasma Weaponry

The Earth Fleet ships use Plasma weaponry which can destabilize any existing electrical systems. Almost like a taser can do to a person, but in appearance like a bolt of bright neon color...
