Closing Note

Time to close this general task, and nuance a little with more specific tasks related to promoting the film.

Thanks for all contributions!

PS: The great news roundups posted by Lord Fakenham have been copied to the News section.

Description

As we are closing in on the start of principal photography (first week of August), it's time to talk about how the project will expand its presence on the internet.

The first couple things to do will be setting up a Twitter account and a production blog, and starting to feed those with content from behind the scenes.

The production blog will be a group effort from myself (the producer), director Thomas and a couple of other cast/crew-members. We are in talks with someone about hosting this, which should bring some initial traffic. The Twitter account is basically our newsfeed, announcing blog posts and other goings-on.

The official site for the movie is still being conceptualized. This is where we put all the official information, including the eventual teaser and trailer, press materials, bios, release info etc. We would also like to do a webstore with merchandise.

We'll be the first to admit that actively using the internet during the making of this movie is something that's new to us as filmmakers.

That's why we would love some input on the following:

- What kind of content do you want to see on a production blog? Only stuff about the project, or is it good to have a wider profile with other things we care about too?

- What kind of content should we start with on the official website? I mean to hold us over until we have some actual shot material and stills.

- What are the ground rules for a movie like ours having a successful online presence? This is an intentionally broad question to hopefully start what we think is an interesting discussion in this context.

Have at it, wreckaholics!

We're running a little behind with all the updates these days as things are quite hectic in the actual production/completion of the film, so it's perfect that you're picking up the slack.

And thanks for all the great comments, guys. You rock.
The reception for the trailer has been crazy good.

There will be a roundup about the trailer over at our blog once the dust settles, and after we publish the trailer ourselves via Youtube etc. This will happen in the next few days.

It was a full house and over 300 people showed up! A few unlucky fans were even turned away at the doors because the venue exceeded its capacity!

Writer/director Thomas Cappelen Malling and producer Eric Vogel gave a great introduction into the universe and mythos of the norwegian ninja. They were joined by Mads Ousdal who also shared his experiences from the production and his own portrayal of Kommandør Treholt.

We were also treated with some very tasty exclusive footage from several scenes.

Going viral

We should kick up some dirt, and start a little brainstorm/discussion
on what would be a cool gimmick or idea on how to spread the word, in the fashion or manner if you will of viral marketing..

One example or formula could for instance look something like this:

(cold war/usa/russia/spies) + litterature + students + Deichmanske bibliotek
= Putting an image or a flyer (related viral/info) inside popular books on the subject!

OK, I just threw that one out there, the ball is now in your court!

I think the reverse graffiti idea is very good and very much doable. You should create some clear instructions on how people should go about it and I'm sure you would see these all over the planet. Would be good to make it all a bit mysterious and not too obvious.

Eric Vogel September 15, 2009 19:50 Flag

Thanks for the suggestions here, guys!

To the "sticking things in books" idea: this is absolutely doable. There are no more left of the promo postcards for the book (I don't think), but we would make new ones anyway for the movie.

Stickers are a great give-away I think, but placement is everything. I agree that it's a risk in creating a mess that will work against the intent of promoting the movie.

I have a follow-up idea though:

How about a stencil in this manner:
http://www.document.no/weblogg/bilder/Toskamindre.JPG

...only with a certain Commander Treholt in his stead, and designed to be applied in the style of "reverse grafitti?" Like this: http://www.dailyartfixx.com/2009/06/30/reverse-graffiti-paul-curtis/

Imagine what some kids armed with cans of Dust-Off could accomplish overnight in an urban area packed with cars and grimy concrete walls!

Lord Fakenham September 15, 2009 13:04 Flag

@Mikkel ..hehey! I like the way you're thinking! ;D
However there is a small problem with this idea, and thats the 'carbon/eco footprint'..
Stickergraphitti is only cool if its done right, and isn't messy.
Plus, there is also the point that it's quite possible the production is unwanting of this kind of exposure or attention.. ;/ Image/brand wise..

But I award you a silver shuriken for creative thinking! :D

'Ham.

Mikkel Myhre Walbækken September 15, 2009 12:09 Flag

I like Lord Fakenham's idea. In addition to do something like that, one could plant stickers around town. For an example stickers with the logotype of the ninja crew, with a small text saying "We were here" or whatever. Sticking them to original places of course, like underneath a coffee cup at a café, in the window sill of a church (visible from the outside) and inside a vogue magazine at a women's hairdresser.

One could also have some kind of competition; Where the individual or "ninja group" that found and photographed/described the location of most stickers wins a secret prize or something.

Ok, just got this idea, so it's kind of crude. Maybe a variation of it could be used.

Lord Fakenham August 20, 2009 10:24 Flag

@Production
..Is there, by any chance, any left over promotional postcards from the 'NTII' (UD17-45) bookrelease left? These could perhaps serve the same purpose one more time, by means of more aggressive/pro-active viral distribution?

Jason M. August 18, 2009 07:00 Flag

I've seen that a few times, while browsing the witch craft books at Borders I've found flyers for people's local Wican groups.

It'd be very cool to have a viral/guerrilla marketing tactic. It'd be somewhat ninja-ish lol.

Online Dôjô

Here are some thoughts along the way of the 'ground rules' mentioned above..

Firstly I think we should say: Less is more.
And that goes for most aspects I suppose.

PUBLICATION and 'reaching the fans' :
- Myspace, forget it, a complete waste of time/energy. (who uses myspace anymore? nobody).
- Twitter is a nice practical must.
- Own site / production blog a must
- Youtube - for official teasers/trailers. NO spoiler 'clips'!
No movie deserves a 'death by too-revealing-trailer' fate.
- Facebook? yes and no.
This one is debatable, but it IS a very communicative platform/medium.
(I created a true blood page, which eventually HBO swallowed up :X - But only after it reached 280,000 members! so, i'm saying.. the potential is great!)

INFORMATION and Content - 'leaking stills, videos and more'.
- Controlling the flow of information is important.
- Contacting selected movieblogs/forums/sites is not to be underestimated.
First, this gives an impression of exclusivity to the selected site/blog,
which could generate more talk/gossip from the same selected site/blog.
Secondly it makes it easier to backtrack info/photos and flow of information. And it also makes it easier to have an overview of WHO and how many gets 'official information' first.

All photos should be watermarked/equipped with a logo.
(Or should they? It could also be pretty cool to make some 'viral' authentic photos to surface somewhere..)
Reason for this, is there are soo many 'wacky' photos on the net, it would be practical to tie-things-together, so that photos are automatically connected to the production/blog. Or else they could simply be drowned out by the white noise of random 'hey-look-at-this' kind of stuff.

An example of good candidates could be,
AICN - Ain't it cool news, everything film + tv!
http://www.aintitcool.com/

Iwatchstuff - Entertainment blog (My personal favourite).
http://www.iwatchstuff.com/

Quiet Earth - Mainly an enterteinment blog for everything post.apocalyptic. But it regularly features cult + non mainstream films.
(another personal favourite).
http://www.quietearth.us/

Quietearth wrote about 'Død Snø' after alittle helpful advice, from myself! ;)

Ok, my rant is super-long already.
Gimme brown sugar!

Cool. Will also get the layout sorted, for some reason it doesn't get the images sized to fit. Works fine on our test server, so should be fixed pretty soon.

Eric Vogel August 23, 2009 14:39 Flag

Peter: I've started cross-posting blog stuff now. Thinking about new tasks as well.

Peter Vesterbacka August 23, 2009 10:46 Flag

One thing about Twitter, Facebook, production blog and all of that. All fine, but at the same time it's very important to think about how to engage people in the making and that's why I think it's very important to have more, and also more specific, tasks here on WAM. You can very easily replicate the production blog here and I think you will get a lot more feedback from the community (which I guess is one of the intents with a production blog in the first place).
Anyway, somehow I think the future is a about collaborative filmmaking, let's not just copy the others, let's create some new ways for making movies.

Eric Vogel August 22, 2009 13:33 Flag

Nice structure there, Fakenham.
And definitely along the lines we've been thinking ourselves too.

re: Facebook. We've decided to not allow fans to post wall content, but are happy to have comments - so their opinions can be voiced anyway. I have a feeling it will be too cluttered/noisy if we open it up all the way. I think this fits in with your assessment that the Facebook page should have "official/streamlined" content. Over time, we will open up a discussion board, but that won't really be relevant until we have some more actual content out there - like a teaser/trailer etc.

Lord Fakenham August 22, 2009 11:48 Flag

More on cross-posting, as the question was an interresting one:

Exclusive content = Production blog.
Streamlined info/official stills = Official site.

The information pyramid/structure for this production could perhaps
look something like this:

1. Production blog = "Read/see it here first" Exclusive content.
2. Moviesite + 3. Facebook = Streamlined info/official stills/news.
4. Twitter + 5. Youtube/vimeo + 6. 'other' = Supplementary

The Facebook page needs to be opened for fan-interraction.
(As they grow a hellu'va lot faster when fans can interract/post/voice their opinions). The trick is to figure out what the wall/settings should be, 'show official post' as standard-view/start tab. That way, official posts are shown as default, but once you start navigating, fan wall-posts pop up!

-any of this make sense? Had to re-write the entire post 2 times due 'internet exploder' crashes :(

Sincerely,
Jonathan Fakenham

Eric Vogel August 21, 2009 08:50 Flag

Okay, I have a little time to address the points in Fakenham's excellent shot now.

First off, I wholeheartedly agree that the principle of "less is more" applies. Any official communications (like new stills, teaser etc.) should have great, lasting quality. We've only released one official still photo from the production - the one that makes up our poster here on WAM now. It works really well, I think. We do have several more (also beginning to get some actual production stills from scenes in the movie), but we didn't want to lessen the impact of the cast announcement with an abundance of stills.

As announced earlier today, we are now on Facebook, Twitter and the production blog has been launched. They each have different functions and "voices". The blog is meant to be informal, and quite different from the upcoming "official homepage". The Facebook page generally follows the standard set by many other projects that have similar pages - news and updates, nothing too "chatty". We'll see what happens with the Twitter account. Depending on how many followers it gains, it's a quick way to have audience interactions - so maybe we'll use it for anwering questions, pushing out event details etc. Maybe some quick competitions?

About popular forums and movie blogs: I do not underestimate the influence of those either. I've been reading AICN since 1997! We do have many things up our sleeve for the blogosphere (wow, that word is sooo 2007) when the time is right...

When it comes to watermarking images - this is a double-edged sword as you say.
If the watermark is cool enough, people won't crop it away when they post images that come from us... We're working on the logo for the movie right now. We'll see.

Youtube stuff (when it's time) will be posted under Tordenfilm's official channel (http://youtube.com/Tordenfilm) as a separate playlist. Inspired by Energia Productions' channel here. Great! Many people have mentioned that we need to use Vimeo as well, as the quality can be better. I'll look into it.

One thing I'll need to think about more is what to cross-post between these various social media, and what to keep separate. Any ideas for a policy on that?

Peter Vesterbacka August 13, 2009 22:15 Flag

Nothing wrong with YouTube, but Vimeo is showing some signs of life as well. They have a very tough battle on their hands though. YouTube has become the standard, but we support both, so no probs. Now we just need to make Wreckamovie bigger than both of those combined;-) We might already be bigger on collaboration...

Eric Vogel August 13, 2009 17:56 Flag

Mr. Fakenham, I applaud you for that insight.
Thanks a million!

I will give a longer response later, as this is the grounds for a major discussion!!!

Lord Fakenham August 13, 2009 16:23 Flag

Thanks, man! And yea ofcourse wrecka. In hindsight, I think it would also be better to perhaps use VIMEO instead of youtube, so much garbage on there..
Vimeo is great for HD, but then again so is Youtube..

Peter Vesterbacka August 13, 2009 16:19 Flag

Great post! Would just add that having the production on Wreckamovie is also a must;-) But I guess that's obvious;-)

Production Blog

A great production blog, should give insights to all things production related.
Both in front of camera, aswell as what goes on behind it. You could elaborate on tech stuff without getting boring if you keep to the subject.
And in the form of a blog, it's my opinion that it won't be boring anyway
because the form is already short and compact, in a spoon-feeding kind-of-way.. Plus, a blog is easy to navigate/backtrack. And most of them are free anyway! Big plus right there..

The ideal result should appeal to not just to a potential audience, but also to the crew behind camera/production and industry. It could be great a great showcase oportunity aswell, with it's obvious advantages.

The big question for THIS production however, is what info and when.

Let me point you towards a great example, (and yet again, personal favourite) with the blog of writer/director Michael J. Bassett.
(I am highly anticipating his newly adaptation of the Solomon Kane novels of Robert E.Howard).

http://michaeljbassett.wordpress.com/

Thats all for now,

The right honorable,
J.F.

Sir,

You are right on the money with the "what info and when" conundrum.

We don't want to spill too many beans too early (as in spoil major plot and character stuff), but at the same time offer something interesting to read and follow - of course. Tricky balance.

The Bassett blog is a great reference, thanks for the link. I notice how he gives his take on current (semi-relevant) events, outside of his current work. That's definitely something we will do as well.

We will also try to be *personal* in whatever we write, and I think it's OK to nerd out on technical stuff every once in a while. Our thing goes live quite soon, so it'll be easy for everyone to give feedback once it's out there.

Some ideas

Of course you need to do the basics which today means:

-Facebook (page for the movie)
-twitter
-maybe MySpace, not sure if it matters anymore
-your own site / blog

And of course you should publish as much stuff as possible here on Wreckamovie. I think you should look at Snowblind, some ideas there. Ideally we should be able to give you a very blog like experience here on Wreckamovie, already pretty good if you have a "Production Blog" task and then do shots whenever you have updates. YouTube and picture embedding works pretty well already today and comments obviously as well, so not too different from a basic blog. Ideas on how to improve that welcome!

The more material you can share the better and it seems like smaller tasks, smaller pieces work better. (for example this task is a bit too big, doesn't invite people to give a shot and comment as it looks like a lot of work).

For your own, initial site and blog I suggest that you keep it very simple, just the basic info about the movie and then the links to Facebook, twitter and of course to Wreckamovie;-)

Of course I'm biased, but I really think that you should focus on getting a few more tasks on here + also get more wreckers for your production. That way you will get more input and more great ideas. No reason why you shouldn't have a few hundred people here on Wreckamovie helping you out, you have a very cool production going.

More, smaller, more specific tasks would be a great start!
