Description

Griffin is designed to be shot in six different countries (a country per episode) - but what are these countries? Pick your favourite and also tell us where we should shoot it - and most importantly, why.

After we've closed the countries we want to shoot in, we'll start looking for the crew from these countries, so stay tuned!

Spain

From the last news: The suspects weren't brilliant hackers but had underworld contacts who helped them build and operate the botnet,

Spain: Good contacts with organized crime. Possibly war between the suspects fighting for the botnet.

How about Croatia?

1. Huge Linux community
2. One of the best European Cybercrime police squad
3. Malware Fighters (volunteers community)
4. Nice locations, CARNet (Croatian Academic Research Network), SRCE (University Computer Center), various IT corporations
5. A huuuge bunch of IT enthusiasts
6. 2008. World Grand-prix for the Crew of Computer study Middle school from Zagreb
and finally
7. Err....one of the first European internet radio started 1997 in Croatia :-)

Benefits for the film crew:
Cheap accomodation...well, in European point of view, not Croatian

Yes, will think about doing something in Croatia. Haven't been there for ages, so this would be a good excuse to be over there.

Yes, high technology and ancient locations work well together. :)

All kinds of stories could be built around this. Very cool to have a datacenter under a church, could see some Stephen King inspired stories about that.

My suggestions.

If the criteria is cybercrime my suggestion are as follow:

1. Stockholm, Sweden. Head capital of piracy.
2. Tokyo, Japan. Need I say more? Ghost in the shell will do it fine...
3. Hong Kong, China. Like Tokyo its=cybercrime ...
4. Moscow, Russia. Most of viruses, trojans or worms are written by Russians.

I really don't care about what city that is the capital of piracy in Europe, but still Sweden, Stockholm is = The Pirat Bay. :)

Angela November 18, 2009 16:35 Flag

I think, actually, that the trick may be the following: a lot of stuff is ripped/pirated in the Netherlands to start with, and then from there it spreads around Europe through the net, especially concentrating in Sweden/Stockholm due to the very strict anti-piracy regulations over there (and people getting cross about them). ;)

Not that it is really important, mind you. I am just quoting what the general feeling around here seems to be. :)

Peter Vesterbacka November 18, 2009 03:53 Flag

You guys in Stockholm need to fight for your piracy capital title, things are not looking too hot for Pirate Bay. Hope things turn out for the better.

I thought that the Netherlands were the capital of piracy in Europe?

Kaliningrad

I just thought about this city, stuck within the EU but still under the rule of Russia.

Wiki article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad is geographically isolated from Russia and its citizens do have some sort of advantages when it comes to travel because they have to cross EU/NATO Land to visit Russia. According to Wikipedia, the Kaliningrad Oblast might turn to be the Russian Hong Kong one day, even though the corruption still complicates business relationships. Apart from this, the European Union is strongly supporting Kaliningrad economically.

I think it might be an interesting place because it could give Russians or Ukrainians hackers the opportunity to stay close to EU targets.

... I also admit it's a cliché (Russians and Ukrainians might not be the best hackers, are they?)

Oh great, so that was not a cliché then :)

Disagreeing as well - Konigsberg, I understand it is no longer the military hub it once was - might bear a greater likeness to San Diego or sleepy hollows like Halifax or Jersey City / Hoboken...

I would imagine Singapore to be another comparable port-town...

Seppo Hiltunen October 28, 2009 13:12 Flag

I disagree - there are plenty of excellent hackers in Russia. Some of them are in good positions, but some may be frustrated in jobs they are teady to change to better paid contracts and thus ready to daring jobs...

State-led cyber crime locations.

China - Example of state-led information control and cybercrime (see hacking to Dalai lama's computers). Also a country where mafia (triad) and organized crime controls the production and sale of pirated material.

Russia - State approved cyber attack on Estonia during the statue controversy shows the potential of cyberwarfare, though on a small scale.

Estonia - Where aforementioned Russian attack happened.

Sweden - Rich liberal country, home of piratebay and lax piracy laws (at least until now). Place where rich, high middle class end users see the most positive and shining side of cybercrime - free access to pirated material. Conversely country of Spotify - fully legal replacement for piratism.

Home of any middle-aged or elderly victim of cybercrime in any country - How you can become prey because of ignorance.

Seconding Riku Pyhälä's suggestions:

US, Silicone Valley - Home of many of the state-of-the art computer firms that have to tackle cybercrime every day.

Lagos, Nigeria - Where the letters come from.

Agree. All good locations for different reasons. Right now our thinking is that we'll start a bit closer to home with either Germany or France, but open to suggestions.

A quick question

You are planning to film the episodes of this series in different countries, but how are you going to do this in practice? Is the actor of the leading role going to travel to all these countries, where the local crews shoot the episode, or will the main character be played by several actors? If so, how are you going to make that work, if the actors from different countries speak English with different accents?

I very much enjoyed the way 'Barbarians At The Gate,' handled meetings in New York, traffic, etc...

Peter Vesterbacka August 09, 2009 09:21 Flag

It hasn't been decided exactly how it will be done, but a good guess is that there will be material shot in lots of locations around the world. And there will be lots of green screens as well. An episode might take palce in New York, but not all of it needs to be shot on location. The main actor (the guy playing Griffin Sharpe) doesn't have to go to all the locations, but you never know;-) And the who the lead actor will be hasn't been decided yet...

Prague

Prague has pretty visuals, hills from which nice shots could be made, and a couple universities including electronics (FEL) and nuclear tech (FJFI). Already used in a number of movies. For movie purposes, the FAMU school and its students may be possible to recruit to help.
