rocket-shaped bunkers: Winkeltürme

The architect Leo Winkel designed theses weird-looking structures:

http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/lsturmtypen/winkel.html

They are located in Wilhelmshaven in north-western Germany.

... Wait a minute! Maybe these aren't rocket-shaped bunkers - maybe they are bunker-shaped rockets! To fly to the moon with!

Funny bunkers shaped so that it is easier to hit them with tanks :) Or maybe they really are German rockets which never were launch to the moon ...

WW2-converted Victorian Fortress - England

Hi there,

Near where I live (East of London) there is a Victorian coastal defence fortress that was built to defend the Thames. It is called Coalhouse Fort.

It is now a very interesting and spooky looking building due to various bunkers and naval defence buildings added to it during the Second World War.

Many mainstream television programmes and movies have filmed at the site, including Batman Begins (the fort was used as the Chinese prison at the beginning of the film) and its underground tunnels and cells have been explored by ghost experts in 'Most Haunted'...!)

The fortress exhibits a combination of both well maintained, nearly new areas but also darker, abandonned parts that are nevertheless still accessible.

The fortress is owned by the local council and as far as I know they don't charge film crews to use it!...

There are many characteristic elements to the facility including huge metal shutter doors and a large courtyard for troops, vehicles or launch equipment. There are many smaller bunkers surrounding Coalhouse Fort, including lookout posts, standard pillboxes and a river mine control station.

Please see the pictures I have included and let me know if it can be useful.

Thanks,

Jack ;D

Ladonia: Nimis and Arx

You may want to take a look at the southern part of Sweden, specifically the "independent nation" of Ladonia (www.ladonia.com). There are some very interesting sculptures (http://www.ladonia.com/nimis_arx/index.html) that could pass as part of a fortress.

T-750 Bunker available

Hello,
through a real estate transaction I came to own
http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/flensburg.html
(very bottom of the page) with a better view on
http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/flensburg2.html
plus - these are best to give an overview - :
http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/flensburg3.html
Net this is a 20 x 20 x 16 m block of concrete with various rooms in it.
Currently we do reconstruction work on an adjacent former military building.

This is WW II highrise bunker.
There is also 1960 subterranean small bunker in the complex which is still originally equipped.
I have no pictures available with me but could do some if of interest.

If you think this is useful do contact me.

By the end of 2008 we will probably convert it to storage or something similar.

Best
Lang

Joutsijärvi, Kemijärvi, Finland

In Joutsijärvi, Kemijärvi, there's a "self-service museum" type of WW2 bunker that has been restored and tidied-up nicely. The restorer and keeper of the sightseeing is the local village club so it might well be possible to get a permission to use it for shots, too.

http://tinyurl.com/5tyxar - there are some pictures of it.

Bunkers

Batteri Dietl on Engeløya in Steigen, Nordland, Norway is very interresting because there was a massive cannon there that could shoot all the way over to the Lofoten islands.

Sorry have no photos.
Jørn

You really need to have a look at this!

I know this pretty good coast fortification some miles from my city. I know the Germans had Russian prisoners and a great gunsite pointing towards the sea.

I found this website with some pictures of the bunkers. (the website is in Norwegian, and the bunkers is in Norway. Most of the text is not that interesting, but I could transelate if there's any need)

http://www.pedagogtreff.com/gdok/obus/Kystfort/index.htm

If this looks interesting, I can go there myself, and get som better pictures.

Also, this is a map with the position of the bunkers, and a description of how to drive from the airport in Trondheim. This is as well in Norwegian, and I can transelate if there is any need.

http://www.gulesider.no/kart/map.c?ps=1&companies=&mapItems=Trafikkmelding&route=a_10000262054%3Ba_10000250684&n=66.1639409641916&s=61.8810888958084&e=18.0574636083364&w=4.28351791166361&zoom=0.33&tool=zoom&scrollX=0&scrollY=0

The link may look a bit big, sorry about that.

Anyway.

Cheers!

Have a look at

http://www.bunker-wilhelmshaven.de/

Probably one of the cities with the largest number of bunkers. You find some nice pictures on the website.
