Max Headroom

Max Headroom was a TV show which was ahead of it's time. Perhaps that's why it didn't last long at the time and eventually they pulled the plug. Contributors of Project Worm should check it out as it had a lot of interesting cyberpunk ideas, depictions, perhaps even predictions of the future. I don't remember too much as it's already quite long time ago since I saw it, but at least the episode about "blanks" was really memorable. Max Headroom FAQ says about them:

Blanks are people who have either fallen off the information nets, or taken themselves off deliberately. Usually known and addressed by their first names with "Blank" as a title - Blank Reg, Blank Bruno, and Blank Dom(inique) are three we get to know well. When Edison Carter has to hide from the authorities, Blank Reg dresses him in Blank style and proclaims, "Edison Carter, Blank! Joinin' the fraternity of the last free men."

The whole FAQ is here http://www.maxheadroom.com/mh_d_faq.html

As far as I know the show haven't been released in DVD or in any other old fashioned physical storage media. If you want to see it, torrents may help to do that.

Yes exactly. They used the original UK film and made it into the "Blipverts" episode as pilot for the US series. So this is the episode where Max Headroom is created. Then afair they threw out the original writers after 6 to 8 really brilliant episodes and the ones after that just sucked big time - cybersoap opera as I said below ;-) Anyways, since I saw that post by Ossi I would SO MUCH love to have the full series on DVD... a shame It's not available!

Kalle, the blipverts thing is the plot of the original Max Headroom film (the one made in the UK). Was that plot redone for the US series?

Kalle Max Hofmann July 22, 2009 09:04 Flag

BTW I just found a VHS tape (once bought from a rental store) that has two epsiodes on it, "blipverts" and the one about those skateboard arena gladiators... Unfortunatley it's all in German... borrring... And I don't seem to know anyone who still has a VHS player ;P

I indeed meant the semi-serious cyberpunk series, not the chat show. What might also confuse people is the fact that they made two pilots for the series: one for UK and another for USA. And If I remember right, it was redone because the series was picked by an American tv-channel. However, I like more the UK version of the pilot. It has better, more grim atmosphere.

"No, the "Max Headroom Feature Film" from the UK was re-made by americans into a tv series with 14 epsiodes"

Well, the original UK series was just a chat show... :-)

For example here he is interviewing Michael Caine:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1sQBI4Ea_I

It's the same chap playing him, supposedly CGI but secretly faked using a rubber mask and video editing.

I remember at the time someone did a parody of Max Headroom, and he said he was amazed that they got the same effect with a rubber mask... they didn't know at the time that the original used a rubber mask too!

No, the "Max Headroom Feature Film" from the UK was re-made by americans into a tv series with 14 epsiodes. They even kept the main cast of Matt Frewer, Amanda Pays and William Morgan Sheppard. I watched the show when it was on German TV (I was a teen then) and I absolutely loved it. Well at least the first six episodes were brilliant, then as I recall it they watered it down into some cyberpunk soap opera ;-)

But if it were released on DVD, I think I'd buy it immediately!

Just to make clear, most people in the UK will remember the Max Headroom chat show, but there was also a semi-serious cyberpunk feature film which preceded it, and explained how Max came to be. I think Ossi is talking mainly about the film?

Ghost in the shell

Both the two movies and the two tvseries named Stand alone complex. When it comes to movies and TV-series about cybercrime, I would say that this is the cream.

should also be mentioned that the movies are short, beautiful glimpses into the world that don't really show that much of it due to their limited time
while the tv-show is more like a western cop-show where it's all about the static world created for the franchise
watch the films if you want to see two awesome films - watch the tv-show if you want to be inspired by the world and technology of it

Not net crime exactly but humans as components of a network

This isn't crime-related, but I think it gives a really nice feel for how to depict humans in relation to the interconnected world. Royksopp have an absolutely excellent video for their song "Remind Me", it shows a typical London officer worker's day as if... well, see for yourself:

I always get a kick out of the slight twist at the end, where the day ends in London but immediately just shifts a few timezones along to Tokyo, with the Earth as a perpetual interconnected machine where humans are components.

Excellent. Something like this could work as the intro for Project WORM.

H*Commerce

"McAfee launched a new Web film series, entitled "H*Commerce: The Business of Hacking You." The film series was created to expose cybercrime as a serious and universal threat that can no longer be ignored.

The term H*Commerce (or Hacker Commerce) is defined as the business of making money through the illegal use of technology to compromise personal and business data.

The project was originally conceived as a series of standalone episodes, each focusing on different aspects of cybercrime – such as phishing, denial of service attacks, online scams, bank scraping, and fraudulent emails.

As the film-makers dug deep into the experience of H*Commerce victims, they realized the film’s focus had to be on the complex stories of real people doing normal online things, only to be violated by cybercriminals.

As Seth Gordon was hired to direct this series, he began the research phase of the film, he identified a woman living in Oregon, named Janella Spears, who was a victim of one of the largest and most elaborate email scams on record.

Spears’ story of losing more than $440,000, and the dire effects it had on her family and marriage, became the central theme of the film series. Over the course of the filming, Chris Roberts, a third-party cyber forensic expert was introduced to Ms. Spears to provide advice on how to clean her system, handle the hackers, and help put an end to the cybercrime scams."

A unusual movie about hacking...

Bedwin Hacker http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368595/

"In the contemporary Tunisian thriller Bedwin Hacker, a female media pirate - holed up in a remote outpost in the mountains of Tunisia - figures out a way to take over the television and radio airwaves in France and North Africa to broadcast political messages. The irritated French Intelligence service closes in on her, which leads to a tit-for-tat game of intrigue between the hacker and her pursuers. Helmed by a female director, this film is of some historical significance, given its unusually frank, straightforward, and accurate portrayal of the day-to-day experiences of north African women. "

I don't know if this movie is available in english. But I found it very interesting. Has anyone heard about it?
