Closing Note

The Dramakulian fleet is now operational and the first effects are being created.

Thanks to all participants on that task, and specially to Yann for creating the models.

Description

In the movie, the P-Fleet makes the Dramaculian angry, which leads to an interstellar war.

We need a complete fleet with smaller and larger ships. The ships must be white and bright, which is a dominant color in dramakulian culture.

We the following ships/structures:
-Flagship (the largest and most powerful ship)
-Cruiser (a large ship, needs an fighter hangar)
-Destroyer (medium ship)
-Fighter (we have some sketches for that already)
-Space Station (where the HQ is located, only thing requires is an observation dome, where we will actually see the inside)

You can either draw some sketch or make high detailed 3d models.

We have a 3D modeller which can do the modelling after sketches.

Edit: Added picture of The DRmakulian boss and Dramakulian soldiers

Cruiser Textured

Here a first try for texturing the cruiser. The end are colored redish, the yellowisch touch from sketch din't really fit. The hangar door area are illuminated with UV light, so that the pilots can find them (Dramakulian have a quite bad vision compared to humans)

This is the undocked mode.
The cruiser is arround 280m wide. (Size might increase to fit the story if needed)

I had to increase the size of the cruiser to 500m wide, otherwise it was too small comparted to the P-Fleet vessels. It would have make the dramakulian too powerful, with small ships. Also one scene required the Twister to tractored arround, the small ships just didn't look good.

Kris S. November 27, 2009 23:01 Flag

Looks good. The red colour works well, it's a bit like the ship from "Red Dwarf".

Should there perhaps be a small obvious "bridge" so that people don't guess this is a modular craft?

Station Textured and Illuminated

Here is the station. It's 5 km large.

First image is view during day. In the second image it's shown during, also when it's in the planet shadow. So the UV lights are turned on, so everybody sees it size. It can then easily been seen from the planet below.

The observation dome/lounge will have to be redesign and reloacted to fit into that station.

thumbs-up!
(really appreciate the shadow art)

Someone thinks I'm not busy enough.... ( had thought of that, just wanted to see, if someone else think of it)

Kris S. December 09, 2009 08:10 Flag

Good suggestion Fabienne, that would look really good if most of the station is in darkness.

Fabienne Gschwind December 09, 2009 07:46 Flag

How about some blinkinig position lights at the far end of the arms?

Peter Vesterbacka December 07, 2009 17:47 Flag

Very cool! I think that the fleet is very impressive, you need to do Star Wreck 2pi the computer game just to get more visibility for these. Or at least a screen saver or something if not a complete game.

Kris S. December 07, 2009 17:24 Flag

Woo... cool. :)

Kalle Max Hofmann December 06, 2009 15:15 Flag

The night version looks really awesome! Maybe you could make a horror film playing on a malfunctioning dramkulian station as a spin-off of the spin-off ;D

it should be bigger... even from far away -

:D

Thierry Gschwind December 04, 2009 17:52 Flag

A lot come also from lightning and texturing and the camera position, so wait until I make that pic.

Jani Salomaa December 04, 2009 17:40 Flag

That's cool, really, but i think it needs more bulk somewhere. Sorry to be the negative bastard, but compared to the cruiser Thierry posted earlier, this one just doesn't look bulky enough to hold all the stuff that a station needs. Maybe you could introduce a bigger middle element without spoiling the awesome modular design..

This is nitpicking, of course. I love all the work you've done, and I'm just glad we have you on board on WAM!!!

Kris S. December 04, 2009 16:04 Flag

That's great, and again it suits the modular feel of the fleet.

I'd love to see what would happen if the captains of the corvettes can't agree what direction they want to go in.

Jani Salomaa December 04, 2009 07:58 Flag

Those are awesomely original and recognizable. Really cool details like the windows make them alive. Can't wait to see these live. Especially the third one which looks like one nasty piece of work.

I disagree about the darker red. It's dark in space as it is. The color should be recognizeable. But maybe there could be some color painted at other parts of the ships, too. Now it looks a bit too uniform.

Thierry Gschwind December 04, 2009 07:48 Flag

A video is planned.
Will try a bit darker red.

Yann Sauvage December 03, 2009 23:06 Flag

Great work!
I appreciate the "windows" lights... Cool!
You should push up the bump.
Mmm... Maybe a darker red (Purple red) will be more impressive.
A video please!

Focus Ship

Here is the Focus Ship, length 300 m.
Eight cruiser can dock at this ship and focus thier primary cannon into the ship, which are then combined and emitted at the front, to damage heavy targets. Up to 8 of the cluster can be chained to create even a even larger beam.
The docking is a bit tricky, so it must be done before battle. The undocking is easy and happend during battle, eg. a module is damaged.
The focus ship is unmanned and control remotely by a cruiser. It has no own weapons.
Due to balance issue, the cruiser must be docked in a symmetric way, since the engine power is generated by the module. The cruiser engines are use for manouver only.

These designs are interesting work.

The concepts are original and the designers are to be congratulated.

Kari Pihkala December 03, 2009 09:25 Flag

Wow!! The second fighter looks very mean!
And it is modular :) If one of the guns gets blown up, the pilot can still use the other ones. Excellent! I wouldn't like to meet these ones in the dark corners of the universe..

Kris S. December 03, 2009 01:01 Flag

Yann, that second design is great too!

It also matches the general style of the modular Dramkulian ships, so it is consistent with the setting.

Jani Salomaa December 02, 2009 17:46 Flag

The second one looks like one bad mo fo! Fantastic and original design.

Having guns firing from four sides would be awesome. It would blind the pilot, sure, but with all that firepower, who cares?

Thierry Gschwind December 02, 2009 17:13 Flag

That second fighters loks cool...

Yann Sauvage December 02, 2009 16:05 Flag

I've posted a personal concept (Work in progress).
A "light" recon fighter... Too fast for you! ;)
Only a cockpit equiped with sensors, light lasers and 4 bomber modified engines.

Kris S. December 02, 2009 14:04 Flag

Ahaaa.... okay, well done Dag!

And well done again to Yann for making the unworkable workable.

Thierry Gschwind December 02, 2009 13:56 Flag

The design was done by Dag Øivind Undseth (a non-active wrecker from Oslo). He stopped modelling on that design, because he thought it would not work out.
But if Yann's creativity it worked out at last.

Kris S. December 02, 2009 13:10 Flag

Ahaa... well, great sketch Thierry! :)

Yann Sauvage December 02, 2009 12:46 Flag

Thanks!
I'm not the author of the sketch.
Thierry sent it to me.
Indeed, it looks like a Star Wars fighter.

Kris S. December 02, 2009 01:04 Flag

"Again, Yann, I don't how you do these designs so fast!"

I know! And they're not rough designs either, they're good solid things that look like they were planned over months.

Jani Salomaa December 02, 2009 00:18 Flag

On the spot, again!!! A-Wing came into my mind as well. But Yann's cool design is narrower and with a lotta hull for an agile fighter.

To me, it looks more like a missile-packed straight-shooter. Not a manouvreable scout-like fighter. More of an F-14 Tomcat (long range weapons platform) than a mobile interceptor.

There's a lot of hull space for heavy ammunition. There's little need for much fuel, so the side 'wings' could be filled with rapid firing missiles. There could be some sideways movement with the side thrusters, but it just doesn't look like an agile and manouvrerable fighter.

So i would go with this fantastic design as a support fighter.

If you can't do another light fighter design, I'd be fine with it, though :) One fighter per fleet is quite enough!

I mean, in space, you can make things turn around on a dime without considering all the air resistance and all that bother. So the slim shape is no hindrance in actual mobility, even though in this day's viewers' mind it may seem so.

(Again, Yann, I don't how you do these designs so fast! Just don't get employed with a time-consuming employer before all the designs are in;)

Kris S. December 01, 2009 22:09 Flag

I could imagine this as a really fast fighter weaving in and out between bigger ships, like in the battle at the end of Return Of The Jedi.

It would look particularly cool if this fighter does a lot of spinning to avoid being hit... :)

Kalle Max Hofmann December 01, 2009 18:48 Flag

Cool! Reminds me a bit of the classic Star Wars "A-Wing" fighter....

Kari Pihkala December 01, 2009 18:17 Flag

That looks cool, very agile!

Is it modular? If one wing is ripped off, the other wing could also be dropped off and the middle part could carry on as nothing had happened..

An idea: how about having two pilots, one on top of each wing. If one gets killed, then the other could drop the damaged parts and continue fighting alone..

Another idea: perhaps two of these ships could be glued together to double/triple the arm power. If the other ship is lost, the other survives.

Flagship WIP

Here is the Flagship Texturing. Not yet completely done.

The Flagship is more coloured than the other ships. The Dramakulian try to impress their enemy that way (It's how dangerous animals do that on their home world). Does it look to kitschig or all I continue ?

The black structure in the middle, is a heavy planetary bombardment cannon which is then diverted by the structure the middle. In the same place a bit lower you find the fighter hangars. (The red/yellow doors)
The round blank structures on the side are heavy anti-ship cannon.

Edit: Added new version, less colourized.

Please comment it.

The Swiss cross could be a nice in-joke? :) The Babel 13 ships in Star Wreck ITP had Finnish in-jokes on them.

Thierry Gschwind December 03, 2009 09:21 Flag

I didn't realize that with the Swiss cross until you told me.....I was much nearer when I changed the colour.

Also Pink is not a primiary colour for humans, but for dramakulians, also it's more UV, but we don't see the primary colour, so it looks pink for us.

Kris S. December 03, 2009 08:47 Flag

The white dots are nice, they give a scale for the ship.

I also like the "hidden" swiss flags on the last picture...

Kris S. December 03, 2009 08:46 Flag

Thierry, I think I know what's bothering me. The blue and red are primary colours, but the pink is secondary. Maybe they should be all primary or all secondary?

http://www.rsc-ne-scotland.ac.uk/ie/Colour_an_Introduction/Colour%20an%20Introduction-112_1.jpg

Thierry Gschwind December 03, 2009 08:03 Flag

I've added a new version with less colours, also I^ve added someplace where you can see windows (small white dots)

BTW, the size of the ship is arround 2 km.

Thierry Gschwind November 30, 2009 18:52 Flag

The red and yellow colour are coming from secondary absorbtion of the pigment they used in the colour, which they don't see and don't care.
We can come up with some more chemical technobabble to explain it.

Fabienne Gschwind November 30, 2009 16:49 Flag

The problem is the UV-vision of the dramculianer: Since they only see in UV and in n very short wavelenght (1-570nm), they will use violet to yellow colours.
Actually we should change the red colour to violet to fit it better.
Green would also be possible it lies at 550nm.

But I'm thinking...would it be possibly to add fluorescence colours, with the computer techniques?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/15/Electromagnetic_spectrum_c.svg

Kris S. November 30, 2009 01:13 Flag

Hmm... it's a very interesting idea.

I agree it would be good to have some colours to make it stand out from all the other ships. It's just a question of which colours and how much.

My own instinct would be to remove the pink completely (it looks fabulous but is perhaps a bit camp for this film?).

Also, I'd change one of the other colours to green.

Peter Vesterbacka December 03, 2009 02:13 Flag

Looks great! I think that you start to have a look and feel that is consistent across the different ships, gives the movie it's own character, which is really nice. Good job!
