Description

There is a scene in Sauna where Rogosin hears a haunting lullaby from out of nowhere. The singer is Rogosin's mother, who is dead. The lullaby is an old one and typical for Karelia area. The language of the lullaby is in old Finnish. There's a short videoclip of that particular scene attached.

First of all we need suggestions what lullaby could be used. Do you know some song your grandma used to sing to you as a kid? It could be something traditional from the beginning of time, but if you have amazing lullaby lyrics on your mind, it could also be something unique written for the movie.

The best thing ever would be ready made sound clips of woman singing a lullaby. Just the plain song, we will add the other effects later.

The preferred sound format is CD quality audio: 44,1KHz, 16-bit, Wav, as those we can use without conversion. Anyway if your equipment records and supports some other format and quality, don't worry we can work with almost anything.

A suggestion

Hi,
Unfortunately I couldn't view the video material of this task. However, I would like to add my own suggestion here (although this comes rather late). Since lullabies often are very simple, this one is too.

I'm no professional musician, so the example may sound quite rough. Hopefully you'll get the melody & lyrics inspite of that. :)

Thanks. :) If the lullaby in the movie is going to be this one or any other suggestion here, I'll hope you also find a good performer for it.

Lullabies are intimacy. A mother to her baby. That's all.

This is just it! It is haunting in it's simplicity.

A great contribution, Zeta!

hi,

thank you for this. This is actually a really creepy one. I love it. We go it through with our music and sound department. This, or at least a new version of this, might end up in the finished film.

Actually the song is going to be sung in russian, so there's a little old info in the task.

all the best,
AJ Annila
director of Sauna

Intimacy can be so bewitching plain and simple like a lullaby.

Russian Lullabies

Here are some Russian lyrics and melodies I found:

"Bai, bai, bai, bai,
Báyu, Detusku mayú!
Bai, bai, bai, bai,
Báyu, Detusku mayú!
Shta na górki, na goryé,
O visyénnei, o poryé,
Ptíchki Bozhiye payút,
F tyómnam lyési gnyózda vyut.

Bai, bai, bai, bai,
Bayu, orchid, little dear.
Bai, bai, bai, bai,
Bayu, orchid, little dear.
On the hillside in the spring,
Birds of heaven sweetly sing,
Seeking for their young what¹s best
In the forest dark they nest."

It's wonderful to listen to lullabies and gleam the diverse
ways that people comfort each other.

Many thanks.

A Runic Lullaby

Ok, you said a haunting lullaby...I couldn't find anything, so I attempted to write my own. I was really kind of going for a runic feel, something very old...I hope you don't mind that it's in english.

From the dismal Sariola
Spake the whore of Pohjola
Begat the Nine for Deaths deserving
Bore her Colic for Stomachs twisting
Bore her Pleurisy for painful Breathing
Bore her Fever for Body burning
Bore her Ulcer for Sore open festering
Bore her Plague for Buboes puss and bloody oozing
Bore her Consumption for Blood filled coughing
Bore her Gout for Joints a swelling
Bore her Sterility for thy Maidens barren
Bore her Cancer for vile Growths a strangling

O' Ukko God of Mercy
Cleanse us of the Nine this Night
See our Water on Rocks a pouring
See the Steam of thine Virtues making
See thy Water turn to Honey
With thine Embers of Hiisi's Stove burning Bright
Send from Us this Hostess Blight

hey a booklet would pretty cool Ukko! O' Merciful one... :)

I enjoy the part "O' Ukko God of Mercy" the most ;)

For the movie purposes this is quite long and since the singer is an old woman from Karelia/Russia the language doesn't really match. Anyways this kind of content can easily be used otherwise. This gave me an idea of somekind of "Art inspired by Sauna" booklet or website, which could be included to the special edition of Sauna DVD pack. Lets see what we can cook up.

Thanks man...to tell you the truth, I've written several different variations on this theme after the powers that be posted this task, and it gave me a nightmare...I actually woke at about 3:30 in the morning...very creepy.

:)

Very nice that you let your creativity flow so much that you came up with an own lullaby. Nice touch with using elements from Kalevala. I'd say you managed to make the whole creation very haunting... not really to be sung to kids... unless you want to make them scared :)

Robert Seppälä May 08, 2008 14:30 Flag

Perhaps this is too runic or poetic; I was thinking it to be played with a kantele....ya, I don't really get the lullaby feeling from this, I'll try something a bit different, hopefully before the deadline. What do you guys think?

Lullaby sugestion

Does this have to be in Finnish? Sometimes throwing in something unrelated can keep fans guessing and hence more interested. Not sure if the Lullaby is a key part of the plot but perhaps something from a more obscure language such as something from Asia or Africa.

How I see it the lullaby should be preferably of russian/karelian origin. The lullaby doesn't play a huge role in the film but it would be perfect to make every small detail as close to realism as possible.

Lullaby about Two...

"Ah - Ah - Ah :
Koty Dva...
Shari buri obidva.
-
Nits niye benje robili
tylko ____ bavili."

TRANSLATES:

"O - O - O :
Kittens Two...
Grey and Beige both of them.
-
They won't start or finish anything
Until ___ plays with them..."

I THOUGHT MAYBE THE THEME OF TWO
MIGHT BE APPROPRIATE HERE.

Regards.

Sydämeni laulu

Composed by Sibelius for choir, creepy lullaby poem of Aleksis Kivi to dead child. Very sad and slow. You could adjust a new version of song, woman singer, creepier music, words translated to old finnish. Sorry no luck with mp3s or mids.

Aleksis Kiven runo Sydämeni laulu :

Tuonen lehto, öinen lehto!
Siell’ on hieno hietakehto,
Sinnepä lapseni saatan.

SieIl' on lapsen lysti olla,
Tuonen herran vaimolla
Kaitsea Tuonelan karjaa.

Siell’ on lapsen lysti olla,
Illan tullen tuuditella
Helmassa Tuonelan immen.

Onpa kullan lysti olla,
Kultakehdoss’ kellahdella,
KuuIlella kehräjälintuu.

Tuonen Viita, rauhan viita!
Kaukana on vaino, riita,
Kaukana kavala maailma.

The song has been performed by many artists, check out link from YLE's disc database:

Creepy and beautiful lyrics indeed.. my hair is standing on end. (Although I think the fifth line is "Tuonen herran vainiolla". Interesting to think, though, what "Death's wife" would look like.) :D

Something like this one...

Check out the "Pohjolan Lumiset Kalmiston Hongat" ... maybe we could adapt some tone from this and modify the lyrics.

This one is also kind of a sad lullaby from the old times, it has a political message, but you may modify the lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eshisjMkf3Q&feature=related

Ljuuli, ljuuli

Well, "Ljuuli, ljuuli" is a pretty well-known old Eastern Karelian lullaby. Here are the lyrics:

http://kotisivu.lumonetti.fi/ulrikaj/bookshelf/koululaulujax.htm#laulu12

Don't know if it's very "haunting", though. (Sorry, no sound clip.)

The old Freedy Kruger movie series had used some sing song kinds songs that they twisted the lyrics slightly and added their own music too. THAT worked well because if was both something recognizable as well as hauntingly different. VERY creepy.

Ukko Kaarto April 23, 2008 06:49 Flag

Great! Ljuuli sounds like a possible one definitely. Can honestly say that we probably wouldn't have ever found this song without you. I have to get AJ here to have a listen and then we probably need someones mama to sing the song :)

I was just wondering if this task is completed, or are the powers that be still taking suggestions/shots for this?

Another Lullaby

Well...this one is more singable, I think. Let me know what you think.

Vihtas, vihtas, vihtas bite
Purge us of our Sins this Night

Pour, pour, pour the Water
Watch the Steam arise not falter

Din, din, din goes the Whore
Steal us to Tuoni’s Door

Wash, Wash, Wash Your Sins
Lest grieve you before the Morning sings.
