Description

So basically i want everyones ideas on what technology and devices would be avalible in 1000years. Earth and Mars (terraformed) are both inhabited planets with asteroids being farmed for minerils.
If i can get general ideas aswell as specific devices also. If you submit a specific design please be aware we may ask you for more detail. Ideas can be for military and civilian use.
As always any ideas submited that are used in the film will have your name assigned to the credits as way of thanks. If you need any more specific knowledge please feel free to ask away :)
I look forward to your ideas.

Future Technology

I. Industry/economics:

a. Asteroid mining
1. nickel-iron asteroid mining should be very important for the economy and industry. M-type asteroids could thus be important hubs of human society beyond Earth. Supply chain management of materials between Earth and the Asteroids would be a massive industry.
2. The cost of rocket fuel for vehicles to escape Earth's gravity would be extremely costly and dangerous for the environment. Orbital elevators would be a cost-effective solution for the expedition of personnel and materials to and from orbit to Earth's surface.
3.Materials besides nickel-iron that could be gleaned from asteroids:
*Carboniferous materials
*volatiles (such as water ice for fuel or human consumption)

II. Space travel
a. Force field propulsion might be used to supplant rocket propulsion.
b. Pulse propulsion (use blasts from nuclear and hydrogen bombs to propel a ship's "sails")
c. The use of artificial gravity always seems so tacky to me in sci-fi. I like how centrifugal living quarters have been used to plant astronomer's feet to the ground. I also like how 2001 ASO used velcro foot-soles and floor surfaces to allow people to walk in a microgravity environment.

III. Life on Earth

a. Many cities will be underwater in 1000 years. Human populations along what was once coastal metropolitan areas will either live on giant cruise ships or on floating cities or in submerged cities.
b. Drinking water may become a HOT COMMODITY. The depletion and contamination of groundwater may ensure that a drinking water solution for the masses will come at a high cost.
c. Civilization will just be bouncing back from a catastrophic upheaval. Many 1st world countries will have gone through revolutions and counter-revolutions. The oldest people in that society will have grim stories from their grandparents that were passed up to them.
d. Technological development will be largely out of humanity's hands: According to Kurzweil, by 2045, there will not be a human on Earth who can develop a computer that will be more sophisticated than one developed by another computer.
e. Cities will be regulated by central AI systems.
f. Transportation will mostly be public.
g. Populations will be largely transient. People will live out of houseboats or small yachts or submersibles.

ENGINEERING
a. Objects will no longer be constructed or built. 3D printing and the modeling of objects from carbon nanotubes will dominate engineering. Objects will be woven or sprayed into existence out of thin air.
b. Nanotechnology will allow for many interesting "smart" materials to be used in public spaces. Floors will clean themselves. Walls will spontaneously change color and light up, replacing any need for light fixtures.
c. Many materials will charge devices from ambient heat, solar energy, kinetic energy.

I'll come up with more ideas as they come to me.

The only reason I see why there should be any shortages for anything, is for the "war effort"

Carl Voluntaryist March 19, 2012 16:53 Flag

If they live underwater, they can use desalination to get water. Recycling technologies would have to advance for space living (IIRC they are quite good now, but are not implemented), and so contaminated groundwater shouldn't be a problem.

Really, with all the energy being produced they would have no issues with water availability.

Other than that I like your ideas!

Some ideas for a background

Of course it’s impossible to predict which technology will work in a thousand years’ time.
But what about the following ideas? In 3000 AD Earth’s resources will be depleted, it will have a dwindling population, and will be largely dependent for its economy and its survival on support of the terraformed Mars, which is in full swing.
However, Mars with its booming economy and quickly rising population wants to cut back on the support of “old” Earth, as that planet has little in the way of a future. There is political friction between the two planetary governments because of this, with Martian leaders feeling forced by the crowds to concentrate on home affairs (where the future is) and to sever the ties with Earth. Earth’s political class is fighting for its survival, but there is little it can do to convince its Martian counterpart to continue or even expand its support.
What about this as a background for your story of this movie?

Forgive my mystipos, it is realy hard to type properly with a touch screen, next time i'll do it from my PC.

Well, it is a natural thing. It happened before but unfortunately we are trying to make a movie and it is an already seen idea. Have you ever seen Total Recall? or Adjustment Bureau?, what about Minority Report? They use already seen ideas but projected in a different manner. And yeah, all written by Philip K. Dick, big fan. I don't say get rid of the idea, i just say turn it into a twisted thing.

My concept is this: Turn it into an actual situation but projected in a more dystopic version of it. Thin goes like this (and this is to make sense with my Pennfield idea):

After a new sort of enterpreuners have emerged it was the same time of Mars artificial terraforming was taking effect. Mars now was ready to be inhabitaded by humans, at least for the stronger because martian air was too light for beeing breethable but it was enough. The problem began when the Mars Project was demanding enormous resources and a world civil war was about to take place. The new political power took control, they called themselves GOVDOGs (government dogs). It was a facist movement who blamed the enterpreuners for the crisis, instead of the government who spent too much in Mars, but they didn't spent all in Mars, corruption, can you see my point?

Just like in WWII when endles crows of people where sent to death camps, the enterpreuners were sent to Mars, so the GOVDOGS always have thought it was a useless project anyway. Yeah, they were sent to die. But theese guys adapted to Mars. As bussines men and people who can put aside emotions they learn to live from Mars resources and created a new peaceful and prosper society.

When GOVDOGs realized martians became even more richer while back in New Earth (as govdos calk it after getting rid off the wealthy class) situation was too dam bad. Hungry spread everywhere, people just killed each other for just a taste of soup. GOVDOGS killed millions just to spare some food by a "random" process. They daily played a game just like lotto at public TV or the futuristic for of it and those who were selected they where just executed. But they food saving process was not just and austerity thing, it was another form of corruption, they just keep more food for themselves and used ti sold the leftovers for a high price.

So envy was burning inside govdogs and they launched a propaganda against the people in Mars telling people something like "Martians are Killing New Earth, so let's kill martians". In other words, they were bkamin Mars people of New Earth problems. But martians were not stupid. They were prepared, they were alway one step ahead because they have lear from history and as bussines men and women they were used to have everything under control. Martians had agents on New Earth and a huge group of counter govdogs were helping martian cause.

So, govdogs assembled a big army, almost 3 million troups (three time the biggest army in history) and thousands of spaceships. It was a disaster. Martians with just 10 000 troups defeated govdogs army something like 6 Day War in 1967. But govdogs didn't admit defeat and told people that Mars was New Earth control. The problem began when surving fighters brought back martian deseaces and a global break out started to kill trillions of people. So govdogs, blaimed Mars again but it was a big mistake because govdogs lies were finaly exposed. So the still govdogs loyals while they were fighting the rebelion, they finaly admited they could not hold situation forever. So they called for a global referendum where people where fooled to decide to revoke or not govdogs governship. But the real votation ended as a destroy or not destroy Mars with a big nuclear weapon. Finaly people voted to kill Mars, they were too tired to keep on fighting anyway.

So a big Nuke was built, while millions were dying for starvation or just because Mars Plague, as they called.

But an Alien invation avoided that calamity. Aliens forced both sides to finaly live in peace and this is the farest as my imagination can go.

Regards.

Some devices I could think of

I think of artificial gravity for space ships like gravitrons so astronauts would never experience bone diseases.

Telephones would be obsolete, since we would be able to communicate through, depending on the evolution focus in the production, either telepathy or electronical enhancements in the brain. So we can take pictures of what we see, we can share it with others, we can listen to music without the need of exterior devices or headphones since the music will be played directly to our brains, every time we want, dreaming will be more pleasant since we will be architects of our own dreams.

lifting heavy cargos or stuff will be more than easy since we will be using either telekinesis or a mini version of the gravitrons to make use of gravity to lift stuff.

We will be able to transfer lots of info through space and instead of making a messenger or a frigate travel through space, we will be able to convert some stuff into bits of information to send and recompose in site the cargo, the stuff in the receiving end.

That's all I can think of now. Thanks.

Penfield Device

Well this is not my idea. It comes from "Do Androids Dream about Electric Sheeps?" written by Philip K Dick, it the novel that inspired the movie Blade Runner.

In the novel there are not quite clear details of it so i'll take the original element and give a more solid argument.

The device goes like this:

After centuries of deceases and contamination expossure, most majority of humans has lost their sense of empathy, they cannot feel emotions. The problem of that is people who does not have fear, they are to reckless and they die in too dangerous activities, people who does not feel anger cannot serve in the army as they are expected to, and so on.

So, cientist discivered that if a person is arificialy driven into the emotional rollercoaster they just start to feel again. But it has a not wanted secondary effect, they are constantly beaten up with emotions, one moment they become extremly happy and they start calling everyone, trying to have a good time and doing very stupid stuff like buying stuffs with money they don't have, and then suddenly they are into a deep depression, they have to face the consequenses of what they did and the debts they are into now. This almost ended into a humanitary crisis. So a "magic" device came to aid humanity. They just call it Penfield device, because it just sounds cool.

Penfield is an improved microwave magnetron wich only.afects neural connections and it stimulates the brain to adquire any emotional state at the level the user wants. It looks like a daser and just like it it has to be pushed on the head near the neck and they only have to program the emotion, the level and the length of it. The device has printed in very small letters that lenght is not guarantied by the factory, it may vary from an user to another.

This solves the problem, at least for a while, but some.people soon starts to become addicted to some emotions and this group they just becomes later into criminals, suicidals, actors, fascists leaders; the mist majority are just typicall users and they become into the regular people. And just as today it takes part of the society they call normal, as it was 1000 years before.

But there are a small part of population who after received their first emotional shot they decided to control emotions by themselves and they became into the richest men over the planet, just as it happens today. Soon they are in somehow addored by regular people.who never dares to live without the Penfield. But some of the rich group, just a few of them became too covet and started to take too much advantage of emotional crowd creating trillions in fortunes, leading the planet into a crisis. And so, as it happens today, all rich people is hated by the crowd, they are about to be hunted because the crimes of just a few of them commited. But the alien visitors avoided the mass lynching.

Well, Philip K. Dick novel does not explains neither why people must artificialy must force emotions. Maybe it is just superstition, they just need to feel emotion for the fear of being retired (in therms of the novel and the movie) because the androids whom are ilegal in earth are just shot upon detection, and androids have no emotions.

Maybe in this film, emotionlessness was considered a new form of atheism and it was cool for a while but then consequences of it where almost unbearable for non emotionlessness people, just as the few religious devoted people of today, and somehow the propaganda was manipulated by this few but powerful group and so there is a current that emerges telling that emotions are good. And as it happens today, people just go from an extreme to another, so the next step of extremism is the artificial emotion rush that leads to a mass disaster and so the Penfield device came to save the day and it was the method that worked for so long until a small group of people decide to control the rush of emotions by themselves.

I hope i've filled the gap in that story.

Regards.

Wow, that's an interesting concept.. Especially, how the evolution of diseases affects our own evolution. There might be a scary truth to that, since we are coming up with new ways to combat diseases, they might find new ways of surviving.. attacking our emotions would be a good way to go.. but, what would be the driving force to people wanting to get back there emotions? I would think they would be rather indifferent.. because, after all, emotions are what has allowed us to reach this point in our civilization, but I imagine 1,000 years into the future, we may have no need for emotions, as all of our needs will be met in other forms, through the advent of new resources and technology.. and since you're open to suggestions as to what that part of our future would look like, I might be able to offer some insight.. computers will be far more evolved than us by that point, so we will be largely dependent on them for many tasks, such as architecture, education, advancements in science, transportation, food.. things we would normally have to work for will be given to us by computers.. killing animals for there consumption will be a thing of the past, since we will get all of our nutrition either grown in a lab or through our bloodstream or by some other means.. we may still have a need for social interaction, but socializing will be much different.. there will be a universal language that isn't left for interpretation and even animals will be able to use it to speak to us.. it will be perfect, like mathematics.. we will know substantially more about physics, which may lead us to the possibility of time travel, knowing how to manipulate gravity, instantaneous transport, total weather control, invisibility, among many other things.. technology will be far beyond most people's comprehension today.. we may be able to upload our brains into some type of universal server with virtual reality or some type of altered reality.. people may want to walk around as surrogate vessels (cyborgs..) medical science may allow us to live for hundreds of years or even forever, if we're able to upload our consciousness or exist in a timeless universe.. the boxes that we're used to living in will likely be spherical.. We'll live in the sea, on other planets, and even through other planes of existence (virtual reality, other dimensions, and other forms of consciousness..) You might be able to tell that this is one of my favorite subjects.. Today, the world is pretty messed up, but there's hope for tomorrow.. Good luck!
