Closing Note

Again, thanks for everybody who participated!

We're currently doing some more test recordings about this role with both Markus and Carl's friend, new voice acting tasks will be added later when the stars are right. :)

Description

We're auditing for a voice actor for a starting narration of an American soldier, one of the main characters in the game. The character is 25 yrs old male, he's got Irish/Canadian heritage, but has lived all his life in the (Northern) US.

Attached is a small excerpt from the script (full length of this part is around 300 words). We're mainly looking for native (or near-native) level English speakers for these parts, but anyone can apply.

Note that this is not the final script or the final recording and if we pick you for the part, you'll get to record the whole thing again with more detailed instructions. For auditions the demands for audio quality aren't that high, just good enough that we can get an idea of how your voice sounds like. Also feel free to audit even if you feel your voice doesn't suit the character/task at all - you never know, you might be a perfect fit for some other character.

Still, it would certainly be a benefit if you have a chance to use good quality recording equipment for the final recording.

Have fun with the auditions, the more participants we get the better!

Recording equipment

A buddy of mine is extremely interested in this task, and has asked what sort of equipment he would need.

He is a native, North-American speaker, that I think would fit the part just dandy.

I told him that for the audition a simple mike should do, but what should he get in the future?

I'd also like to know, come to think of it.

Finally, here are a few key points as a reply to your question about recording equipment from our audio freelancers:
* Try to eliminate echoes where possible. Using, for example, your bed (propped upright) and some blankets, you can limit a relatively echoless "recording booth" for yourself.
* If possible, the microphone should be attached to a stand to eliminate noise from its structure.
* A pop-filter would be great for eliminating the popping sound of p:s on the microphone, those are impossible to completely remove in the post-processing phase. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_filter
* As for microphones, ones with large diaphragms are generally best
* For other hardware it's hard to give accurate instructions, a home studio grade sound card should have a good enough preamp for our needs

Still working on this, we're subcontracting audio from freelancers so there's naturally been more delay in the communication than with people here at the office. They sent some quick key points to me in Finnish, but it's pretty intense in audio terminology so I'm waiting to hear if they could provide some brief points in English - it's always tricky to translate unfamiliar jargon, and I've been very busy with the current crunch. If they don't get back to me soon, though, I'll do a quick translation of the key guidelines.

It'd be cool to hear your friend's audition in any case, though - he sounds like a very good candidate.

This is an excellent question, and one that I'll have to run through our audio people right away. Being a small company we don't actually have a proper in-house studio either, we're renting necessary studio-time from outside for SFX etc.

I'll get back to you on this asap, sorry for not including the info in the original task and thanks for pointing it out!

Yeah, I'd also like to know what level of mic one should have for the final version. Of course some people might be able to travel to your office to record it (even easier for advice on the spot) but naturally most can't. So, what's our aim?

My shot

Like I said before, I'm not sure my voice fits the character. But since you could eventually use it for some other character, well then here it is:

You've got a very good voice! You may be right that it might not suit this specific character that well, but I can think of several characters already whom it would fit like a glove!

Good call Jani, thanks! I will try another take based on your recommendations.

Thanks! Much appreciated!

Jani Salomaa August 12, 2011 15:40 Flag

You definitely have the voice to do something!

If I was directing, i'd say do it more like you were under interrogation.

A bit longer breaks between sentences (like you were careful of what you say) and then a honest natural delivery (trying to explain to what happened). And memorize it, imagine the situation. Don't read.

Philippe August 12, 2011 15:16 Flag

Thanks Jani, yes - I know my accent is not exactly American either, but who knows they might need my voice for something so...
At least now they got a idea of what it sounds like.

Jani Salomaa August 12, 2011 15:08 Flag

You sound just like the old guy in intro video in Civilization 5 (younger, of course)!

You've got a great low voice, but the accent is just a tad too strong. I wouldn't QUITE think of you as American. It's close, though, so good work.

Jerrie Redneck Style :P

I'm a bit confused, didn't we do that part already? Well since I'm just doing some recording at home anyways, I gave it a quick try!

Kalle: That's the spirit, thanks for taking part!

Good voice acting there, your voice sounds very usable. It should be no problem finding character(s) that it fits.

And yeah, it's a repeated role: we went over deadline with the officer roles, but still have time to get more auditions for this one (we only got one in the old task). I thought I had mentioned in the task, but looks like I only wrote it in the closing note of the old task.

Hehhe yeah I know, hence my shot title... "Jerrie" for "German" :P

But Jani, I hope you know that you HAVE to upload your shot as well now... after all you admitted trying, and this task is for the ISOH guys to evaluate our voices to see if they can use them for *any* role! I bet there will be some Germans or Finns that we could help out with, voice-wise :D

Jani Salomaa August 12, 2011 15:06 Flag

Kalle - ain't bad, but sorry to say, your accent still shines through. Especially the "v" for "w"...

I tried at home, and even though i've lived in the States, no dice. There ain't no substitute for real native American accent.
