Closing Note

Thanks for everybody who participated in parts 1 and 2! We got some very promising auditions, but unfortunately made the mistake of starting the process too late and running out of time - I'm really sorry for that! The deadline for the officer roles is at hand already, so we ended up using a freelancer for them.

However, third part of the task with more roles to audition will follow within a few weeks, it'd be great to have you all participate again. :) These ones have a more relaxed schedule, so we should have time to go through with them properly.

Description

For earlier information on the task, see
http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/2226

As said in the previous part, we're looking for sound actors for three short narration parts that will be used in a trailer and a demo introduction. We're mainly looking for native (or near-native) level English speakers for these parts, but anyone can apply - we'll probably have more roles to fill later, especially if there are enough wreckers showing interest. It'd also be preferable to have a good quality microphone/recording equipment at your disposal.

The audition script is now available as an attachment to this task. Record one or several of the characters in your own voice and send us the recording or a link to it. You can either post it in this task or e-mail it to me at firstname.lastname@ironskygame.com

Audio quality for the auditions doesn't have to be top notch, just good enough for us to get an idea of your voice, pronunciation & voice acting skills. I won't specify a format for the audio files, but some sort of compressed audio format (such as mp3) would probably keep the filesize down and make sending as attachment easier. If you record more than one character, send each character audition in a separate file so it's easier for us to compare auditions of the same type.

If you have any questions, don't hesistate to ask!

Attempt 1

Allright, so in my haste I put together at least something, it might inspire others to do better. At least I hope, since the quality on this one is pretty hideous.

Overacting ignored, the hiss you hear on the background is the poor soundcard I mentioned. Also, my breathguard is missing on this mic setup, so I decided to use it as an added effect. The long breath-in is in there intentionally.

Originally I did these one line at a time, but for some reason it fealt more natural to just oneline it all at once. If you feel my timing is off (too fast, too slow, too strong emphasis on something, I sound ridiculous to your ears, anything), please post something about it in the comments. Remember, this is a first draft to base the future on, I did this in less than 20 takes, including the single line tries.

Here's to hoping others do better on the nazis, since my voice is definitely too young for the officers.

EDIT: Allright, upped version 2 with "regular speech", Berlin still ended up being a bit focused, but it's the way it's spoken so meh.

Thanks for the second version, just listened it through for the first time and it didn't sound half bad. We might well ask you to try out the rest of that narration within a week or two.

I'm closing this task now since the deadline for the officer roles proved out to be too strict for doing it properly through the community, but there's still time for the American role.

I'll also open a new task in the near future with several new characters to audition for.

Sorry, I was supposed to write you longer comments, but looks like today was a lot busier than I expected. :/ Tomorrow I'll only be at work half of the day before heading off to Ropecon so I might not have the time then either. Anyway, what I already wrote was the gist of it, overall your voice sounds very usable to me.

If you'll get a new version up during the weekend I'll do my best to give you feedback on both on Monday, I hope to get more entries by then too (especially for the officers). :) I'll also run all the entries by some other team members for comments.

Whee, it's great to hear good feedback.

I'll cook up a lighter accented version sometime in the near future, after listening to that version one more time a day later, I realize it is laying it on pretty thick.

I'm really starting to regret my choice of mic and recording gear, I'd love the soundbits to sound better. Guess I'll be going to Verkkokauppa to buy that new headset afterall =).

Not bad at all in such a tight schedule!

I'm wrapping up work for today right now, but I'll put together some proper comments tomorrow.

For now, after a quick listening of a few times, I especially like the bit from "I remember thinking..." until the end, it has a nice and natural feel.

Could you try a version with slightly lighter accent next, it'd be nice to get to compare the versions? Also some words like "Berlin" and "circle" could have slightly lighter emphasis, perhaps.

Also, thanks for the shot! Can't say anything for certain, but I'm pretty confident that we'll find use for your voice, either for this character or some other (perhaps even several, I've got a couple of options in mind already). We'll be needing stuff for various starting-, ending- and in-between narrations and we've also been thinking of recording some of the important dialogues in the game too via Wreckamovie if we get enough motivated wreckers together in the community. :)

Hi all,

I took the challenge and plugged in my mike for recording the NO2 part. Enjoy !

Looking forward to try more fitting dialogues.

Cheers !

Great, thanks for participating! I feel that your voice would fit very well to our scientist characters, for example.

Very good to see that people have interest in this kind of task, we'll no doubt have more different voice acting roles available in the future (both for trailers and actual game materials).

All the Reich moves!

hehhe great, a voice acting task! I couldn't resist giving this a try, but mind you - I'm not a professional voice actor :P

Maybe you can use my voice for some of the lower German goons, at least I have the proper accent - which I exaggerated for this, to make it sound kind of Udo Kier-ish ;D

Alright guys, who is next in line to let down their pants? :P

Great stuff Markus and Kalle!

Thank you thank you, I think your south-state american is even better! We probably could team up for a good low-budget version of Brad Pitt and Christoph Walz in their "Inglourious Basterds" roles ;P

Markus Koskivirta July 28, 2011 18:51 Flag

Haha, I loved your accent, even if it indeed was a bit over the top. =D

You'd make an excellent officer, good sir.
