Description

In this task you can post any reference pictures (photographs, art, sketches, blueprints,...) of WWII/1940s and older objects, buildings, people and whatever you can think of that could fit the concept of a secret Nazi military research base in the Antarctica.

We've been getting a bunch of great photographs and other references in the General ideas task already, but I wanted to add a separate task for this because these can be quite handy for us. Hunting for references is always time away from modeling and designing, so this is very helpful indeed!

Some categories that are really great to have are:
* Furniture
* Military facilities and bunkers
* Vehicles
* Mundane items such as tools and utensils
* Scientific instruments

Please include source links for pictures that are not of your own creation - these are used just for reference, but it's still cool to know where the pics came from. Also, if you know of a site with lots of good pics, you can just post a link to that site (preferably directly to the gallery of pics).

Saint Nazaire naval base and bunkers

In Saint Nazaire (France), as in La Rochelle, there were a nazi military base, including a submarine.
Some pictures here.
I might take some photos in the following weeks if needed:

That sounds awesome!

ORL January 31, 2012 22:20 Flag

If it's not too much a hurry, I might get there within a few weeks, and can take some shots.

Matti Delahay January 30, 2012 10:23 Flag

Very cool reference! It would be awesome to get more photos from there if it's not too much trouble, they'd be useful for level design and inspiration.

ORL January 27, 2012 10:16 Flag

might be, Saint Nazaire is one of the three spots in France being big nazi base, and one of the two (iirc) "poches de résistance" (it means the german nazis were trapped in it but still fight even after the coallition attack).....

OK, I'm just discovering how much I miss english vacobulary about WWII!!

was this location used in Indiana Jones and James Bond films? Looks so familiar :D

A German mine that shut down in 2000

That's the entrance to a mine-shaft elevator (aka 'cage')

WTF is that?

Aah! It's a Kaue (miner's bath house) where they rinse down their equipment.

This is a post-ww2 German mine, but it still looks cool enough that you could be inspired.

Nice! These are excellent reference for the lowest floors of the base near the geothermal power plant.

Nice, there are some very good bits in that video too.

Aric Fisher - æwakened Productions September 02, 2011 06:23 Flag

Thanks, Matti. Those are actually from Erich Honecker's nuclear bunker in East Germany. There is a website featuring these images. A bit more modern, but very nice stuff.

Here is a youtube clip that could be of interest:

These are great, thanks for sharing them! The third and fourth pics are especially good, it's really hard to find good reference/inspiration pics from such inside areas.

That makes sense :D
I thought the airscrew or motor could put on ice or something like that o,o
But I see,Learning never stops! Thank you :D

Matti Delahay August 22, 2011 12:10 Flag

They could well have planes there, the Americans planned to try and build an airfield there IRL, but since they're so far in the development of their experimental flying saucers they probably don't have that much use for the planes any more (and they don't want to risk anyone seeing/hearing the planes and finding out about the base either). :)

Chantal Mueller - Novas August 22, 2011 11:42 Flag

I see :) But you're right D:
The Antarctis is too cold for planes,right? .__.
That was a bit stupid from me :D

Matti Delahay August 22, 2011 09:15 Flag

There probably won't be many ordinary fighter planes in the base, but there might be parts of disassembled planes so these could be useful, thanks!
