Closing Note

Thanks a *lot* everybody, this was the first task on Wreck A Movie that we now complete. We had a lot of good ideas, you'll see some stuff in the demo when it comes out, so thanks a *lot* to everybody!

It's great to see WAM actually working, and you people actually being so active!

Description

One of the pictures in Iron Sky demo is the Hangar, where Nazi fleet has been prepared. The picture you see attached is a rough and unfinished render of one of these assembly & docking halls - under the central round slab are stored all the Nazi ufos - at least the ones in this docking hall.

Now, the rough design of the hall is pretty empty, and I'd like to add some elements there to make it actually seem like it's a big place with a lot of things going on. Your task is to come up with great ideas and elements that would fit in a hall like that.

You may either just drop a link to a webpage or a picture on the net, or even model an object of your own, whichever suits you the best.

Be creative!

And please note, this is a bit hurried task, since we're going to start to model the elements there next week, so keep your ideas flowing but be quick!

Old trucks.

I've always thought that it would be cool to see old-model tanker trucks, kubelwagens and other such support vehicles in the hangar. The place is big enough that cars could/would be used to get around.

Any thoughts?

Good shot, I also like the tanker truck -idea. Let's see if we can fit one into the picture. Jussi, your input was also good. Some colour would be good, and scale is also an important issue there.

Jussi Vänskä April 25, 2008 17:45 Flag

the scale of the hangar is a bit off if you plan to drive around with cars or trucks. something very identifiable(yellow rubber duck?) should appear in the picture, which puts the space into right perspective. Humans will do the trick. The rail on the wall should be scaled down.

The picture could use some bright colorful details to contrast the overall grayish ambiance. walkways painted on the floor with yellow and maybe on the walls( zero gravity? ) too. Some other odd markings as 'parking verbodet' around a doorway etc...

Jarmo Puskala April 14, 2008 08:42 Flag

Well, these pics are pretty much where the idea comes from. I think the old cars give a nice contrast to the scifi feeling:

Cranes Mounted to the Ceilings

Having crane is good idea. How about if cranes woulf be mounted to the upper structures as they are in factories etc. This would make them easier to move they wouldn´t need so much precious vacancy.

Those chains hanging there must be part of the crane. But it really isn't too visible.

Oskar Lönnberg April 24, 2008 19:10 Flag

Samuli pointed out that actually there is a crane in the ceiling allready

Danger-stripes

You know those black/yellow warning sripes..
Essential for every street credible space hangar :P
(my photoshopping isn't so street credible in this picture.. but it isn't intended to be :)

Rocket engine, platform, pipe-construction

Rocket engine repair and some tools laying around..
Pipe construction site, there could be some additional supportive structures.. and maybe
piles of pipes or something like that.
And a service platform to gain better access for the different parts of the spaceships.

Yeah, I realized it was a doorway.. the platform would be lowered down from the cealing when a spacecraft is already docked for repairs. It would give better accessability for the repair crew to do maintenance. The platform could also come from the side or something like that.. http://users.kymp.net/cable047/jeps2.jpg

Mikko Monto April 28, 2008 12:11 Flag

The circle shaped area on the floor is actually a doorway, so we cannot place any large constructions on top of it due to functional issues.

Could there be a rocket and trailer? Here is one demo, no real textures added.

Wonderful, Martti! Thanks!

Martti "Masa" Rikkonen April 27, 2008 12:28 Flag

obj. format look strange so I change it to 3ds format and it seem to work now much better.

Martti "Masa" Rikkonen April 27, 2008 12:03 Flag

Hi, Timo barrel is in .obj format and it is saved. I hope you can use it. If you want it in different format please send some email.

Timo Vuorensola April 25, 2008 19:58 Flag

Yo, Martti, great stuff! If possible, please edit this shot and attach the 3D model there, so we'll get it from here. We'll start placing stuff to the picture on tuesday.

Martti "Masa" Rikkonen April 25, 2008 06:43 Flag

Thank you, Timo-Heikki, link to the wikipedia was useful. I made the 3D-model of barrel and design rusty texture with radioactive logo. It´s usually easier understand models if there is some kind of texture with in it. It´s also much easier find modelling and texture mistakes. I think 3D-model was the point what Timo Vuorensola meant.

Timo-Heikki Mäkelä April 24, 2008 21:56 Flag

One point... The radioactive material sign wasn't known'r by the nazis. They'd be using some other warnings.

From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazard_symbol):
"Radioactive sign
Radioactivity
The early Radioactive trefoil. (1946)

The international radiation symbol (also known as trefoil) first appeared in 1946, at the University of California, Berkeley Radiation Laboratory. At the time, it was rendered as magenta, and was set on a blue background.[2] (See right.) The modern version is black against a yellow background, and it is drawn with a central circle of radius R, an internal radius of 1.5R and an external radius of 5R for the blades, which are separated from each other by 60°.[3]"

Martti "Masa" Rikkonen April 24, 2008 18:21 Flag

Ok, It´s ready and model and textures are mine, you can use it, if you want.

Martti "Masa" Rikkonen April 24, 2008 15:52 Flag

The shape is not quite ready yet, I like to do it little bit better. Texture is also quite poor.

Timo Vuorensola April 24, 2008 13:19 Flag

Very good looking barrel. Is that your 3D-model? Could we use it?

"Achtung!" and other signs

I would expect there to be some written regulations and orders on the walls, with noticeable "Achtung!" and swastika on top.

Also "Ausgang" signs should be visible somewhere. I'm not sure if there are any doors to the area at all now...

How about some signs, which would resemble some usual signs, but would not "exactly" be so? Say, 'Ausfahrt' is a normal sign, but it could be slightly misspelled 'Ausfart' or even more radically 'Ausfurz' (fart out).

Such texts could naturally appear everywhere, not just in this hangar. They don't necessarily need to be exactly correct German even, because they've been misspelled 'by accident' or someone could have vandalised a sign or whatever.

Some other 'mis-spellings' I found quickly (not all usable here):
- "Aas" (carcass) vs, "Aar" (eagle)
- "Arsch" (arse) vs. "Arzt" (doctor)
- "Artist" (artist) vs "Arzt" (doctor)
- "Armen" (the poors') vs. "Armeen" (armies)
- "Hefen" (yeast; mob) vs. "Hafen" (harbour; haven)
- "Korpus" (corpses) vs. "Korps" (military Corps)
- "Feind" (enemy) vs. "Freund" (friend)
- "Fluh" (stonewall, concrete) or "Flut" (high tide) or "Fluß" (flow) vs. "Flug" (flight)
- "Fest" (party, celebration) vs. "Feste" (fortress; firmament)
- "Kompost" (dunghill) vs. "Kompaß" (compass)
- "Kühe" (cows) vs. "Küche" (kitchen)
- "Not" (need, trouble) vs. "Nota" (note)
- "Organ" (organ) vs. "Orkan" (hurricane)
- "Pest" (plague) vs. "Petz" (bear)
- "Ratte" (rat) vs. "Rat" (advice; advisory)
- "Riese" (giant) or "Ries" (ream, measure of paper) vs. "Reis" (rice)
- "Sonne" (Sun) vs. "Zone" (Zone)
- "Verlies" (dungeon) vs. Versailles
- "Wespe" (wasps) vs. "Weste" (vests)
- "Weiber" (women, hags) vs. "Weiser" (pointer)
- "Wagestück" (hazardous attempt) vs. "Wagen" (wagon, car)
- "Waffel" (wafers) vs. "Waffe" (arms, weapons)
- "Wette" (bet) vs. "Wetter" (weather)
- "Zahn" (tooth) vs. "Zahl" (number)

Rauchen verboten! (No smoking allowed) signs are a must in any aircraft/ufo hangar.

Lare Lekman April 14, 2008 22:35 Flag

How about marking all airlock-looking doors funnily as Raumgang i.e. "space entrance"

Timo-Heikki Mäkelä April 13, 2008 15:52 Flag

Also "Alarme!" with a telephone would be most necessary every here and there!

Yea... Germans better tell themselves, where they came in from... :)

Timo Vuorensola April 13, 2008 15:36 Flag

There's one, on the far wall, right across the big central area. It's just a bit open there. And it needs to have Ausgang. Actually, Germans in WWII used to mark many doors as Eingang/Ausgang, just to make sure everybody understood :)

Radio / TV-control truck

I know the main controls are in the control room, of course. But Germans did have very advanced radio technology, and they used radios on battlefield a lot. Now, as this is certainly the high-tech area of the nazis, there should be at least some radio technology also clearly visible.

Furthermore, the nazis also did have the first internal TV-control systems in Peenemünde, as well as TV broadcasts in general. Including a control truck with radios and TV controls on the scene would enable an obvious joke: While camera shortly were passing by, a poor German guard could be caught watching nazi porn on internal TV! (Make that his fellow guard Hilde stripping for him somewhere else...)
