Now I don't know if you want to do it "right" or the way it looks better, but I thought I'd give a Shot about historical accuracy.
The Waffen-SS (field units of the SS) used the regular, standard, M36/40/43 feldgrau uniform and camoflauge overcoats and also occasionally camo-trousers. If these SS-men are to be members of the Dirlewanger-outfit, I'd go feldgrau w/ camo bits.
The black uniform was not used on the field. Mainly it's seen worn by persons working in offices, on ceremonial duties, or by the Leibstandarte-units(life guards). Also, black uniforms were used by the tank crews, but the actual uniform is different from the regular models.
I could go on further, but to keep this Shot short, I'd suggest (if you want to go correct) you contact some local re-enactors to get precise person-to-person consultation on this uniform issue.
Personally, I do think the black uniform looks better, no doubt about that, and I don't think there would be much backfire from history buffs either ;)

I will be willing to help aswell, my grandfather was an Oberscharführer in ss Wiking, even have some parts of his uniform lying around.
As far as Kent was so nice to comment my shot, I’ll do the same. :)
And just repeat what I said before. Nothing can be absurd in a fictional story if it has a good explanation. As far as it’s a zombie movie with location in Kentucky it’s hard to talk about historical accuracy, because it’s already has nothing in common with history.
But director can go with idea he finds more good for him.
