Description

Hello!

Biggest part of Anselm movie is happening year 1988. Of course we need things which were common those days. One of the biggest is of course legendary Commodore-64 and its games. We need some animation which looks like Track & Field game. We are using this material composed to tv and Anselm playing with joystick. We don´t want to use original Track & Field game footage because of copyright.

Any animators/compositors who can produce oldschool material?

Something like that but in 2K resolution:

Potential solution

I've contacted a guy who knows how to do this, and is initially interested in the project.

I have asked him to contact Matti.

If he doesn't have the time, he'll know others who can pull this off.

What i need to persuade him is a timeframe and technical details. What is the deadline? How do you wanna do this? REAL C64, PC simulation, or just animation? And how are you gonna shoot or use this footage?

My personal wreckamovie mail is open for your answers, if you don't want them public.

Ah... I forgot the timetable. We are going to shoot this scene at late summer. Of course we don´t need a final animation then but we should have at least rough version.

Nice!

I think we need about 15 second long animation (100 meter run). We are mainly going to composite it to old 4:3 television but also use it as fullscreen. For fullscreen using we need a 2K (2048×1152) resolution version.

We have a fantasy-movie elements in this film and I think this C64 animation could also contains some surreal elements.

Copyright violation ?

Curious how its against copyright if your not selling it and your only "playing the game" in the movie. Technically, that would mean that all these people over the past decades would be in violation when they make a home movie. All those youtbubers are in violation as well. So my question is, are you trying to make money on this film or is this just for fun ? If its non profit, then I can't see a reason why you would be violating copyrights.

Thanks for comments!

I think it is better to produce own custom-made material. Then we can be sure that there is not going to be any problems at future. Another reason is that we are shooting Anselm with 4K RedOne camera and we would like to make all animations also at least 2K resolution.

UPDATE : Ok I emailed Stephen for ya. I asked if I could film the game being played and i'm waiting on his reply. I ALSO made some footage of the game as I am playing it. Got about 11 minutes worth. If I get the go ahead, I would need a place I can put this. So as soon as I hear something i'll let you know asap. Usually it takes him a couple days to respond. If you don't hear anything by Monday, then I obviously did not get his response. I honestly don't believe it would be a problem, but just in case, i'm waiting on his response.

I almost forgot this one. Ever heard of Starflight ? I actually spoke to one of the creators in email. They are working on a 3rd edition of it. BUT, they made Starflight 1 and 2 in the late 80s. AND they even made C64 versions of it.

http://www.starflight3.org

This is the website for their third edition that they are SLOOOWLY working on. Head to that website to see more about it. There is all kinds of info on that game. And yes, their older versions look just like the games from back in the 80s. Its perfect. There is even free copies of their older games on various websites.

If you want to talk to one of them, message me here and i'll send you Stephen's email address if you cannot find it on the website. He and I used to converse back and forth about their forum.

Yea. I hear ya.. I also know that some games after the time limit are open season to be free to download. Not sure how that is on console games, but on PC games this is true. There are websites that state it.

Example :
http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/

This site shows all the old games that were commercial and are now fully legal to download now because of an "expiration date" on the game. I think its neat. Anyhow, I don't know if that applies to commodore, but it does for PC. So there is your material right there if you need older games.

Hope that helps.

I'm not an expert, but the clause in the copyright text in the game "or any other unauthorized use of this material" or something like that MIGHT make it illegal.

It's not very likely anyone would sue a Finnish small movie studio over this. Especially when it's about an OLD game, no longer in sale. More likely they'd consider it as a tribute.

But if you can find a wrecker to create a completely new game or content, why not do it!? I doubt anyone in recent years has done a C64 game to promote their movie :)
