Description

Alright. The film is finished... So it's about time to create a "real" trailer at last!

The three existing trailers were all kind of fake bake as none of them contained any final footage, and some even had shots that were specifically created and are not in the film.

So, now it's time to make the real "story" trailer - the only qustion is: HOW TO DO IT?!?

;P

We have noticed it's a bit of a problem that Snowblind has the slow pace of a western, and the humour is really quite subtle, not totally in-your-face. That's why it is hard to convey that the film isn't serious, but not a parody either. Well it's Grindhouse, but a good number of people don't even know what THAT is supposed to mean ; )

So the question is: How could the film best be represented. Some of you have seen it already, those who haven't can maybe get the idea from all that has been said here plus the old trailers. I will link to them at the bottom for a second look.

All ideas are welcome, you can also post other trailers that may be a good reference, or even ones that could be spoofed by means of a mash-up-approach, or you can just tell us which parts of the old trailers work or suck ;P

Thanks,
Kalle-Max ^_^

Slow-paced vs full-on?

After reading the comments here, I wonder what you guys generally would think more fitting - a slow, rather quiet, trailer fading in some of the locations and scenes from Snowblind... setting up more like an atmosphere, like it is done in the 3D teaser?

Or would you rather have lots of action scenes and one-liners accompanied by some guitar riffs like in the second half of the "mashup"-trailer?

A bit hard to tell for me because Snowblind obviously is both, but presentig it in a totally divided way like in the mashup-trailer doesn't feel right either...

Next question; what do you think about a presenter's voice? Like in the epic original grindhouse machete trailer? At least that would make it clear it's grindhouse, not sure what the guy would be supposed to say though ;P

BTW ever seen this trailer here? It explains the grindhouse concept for the theatrical release of RR&QT's double feature... feels kind of dumb but on the other hand, that just adds to the "realism" ;D

The main problem is the question "Slow-paced vs full-on?" Snowblind has both sides. If the trailer only concentrates to one side, it will give people false image of the film. that's why you'll need both sides in the trailer.

I saw the mash up trailer and then I saw the film. It was clockwork. I didn't realize it wasn't the final trailer. I still don't understand why it couldn't be the final trailer. So there are images that are not in the film. That is the essence of grindhouse and that is exactly what I like about the mash up trailer.

If you want to add something to the trailer, add the porch scene. The honour and respect is missing from the trailer.

How about a juxtaposition?

Sweltering mashup set against
a sentimental serenade?

You can keep the title cards suggestive :

1. Greenscreen And Grindhouse...
'A Gun-Ho World'

2. A Postap...Spaghetti Western
'A Gun-Toting Adventure'

3. Sex and Violins
'Featuring Suggestive Material'

4. A Love Triangle With A Body Count
'Intriguing Material'

5. OK Kids Big Finish
'And High Caliber Violence'

Snowblind
-Heatseeker-

Hehhe, next time we better hire Clint Eastwood ;P

Well once again, this is a bit hard to adapt cause we don't have these hard-as-nails lines like "...four coffins... my mistake!"

Still, a 70s voiceover is cool... only wonder who's gonna perform it... and who will write it >_<

The "Chapter" trailer I proposed was an accelerating in my mind. That would best describe the alternating rhythm of Snowblind.

There are great slow scenes in Snowblind that I wouldn't leave out from the trailer
- "He'll go snowblind"
- the bath scenes
- this is my wife
- the motivation of the governor
- the mutual respect of the gunslingers

- Barbara, thou convincing, is in a supporting role.

On the other hand the fast gunfighting is what Snowblind is all about. you might get inspiration from this trailer : snowblind is the first movie of it's kind. It won't be the last :)

voice over definately deep and out of this world echo :)

What i could imagine is ...

... start with (IF there is something like this, i haven't seen the movie yet) the shootout, the duel. Very slow. Only eyes, parts of the faces, at least for 30 seconds. Then a cut, the movie title, and then, very quickly, a lot of scenes, but only a glimpse of each scene. No dialogues. Don't show much, just heat things up! So that i have to see it again and again and again ...

Well I guess Snowblind just isn't epic enough for this... it's shot more like a TV show in a way, our studio just wasn't that big ^_^

But I totally agree that a bit too short is way better than a bit too long. YouTube has quite a nice analysis tool that gives you a "viewer's interest curve". This showed in the case of our previous trailers, that the average attention span for a Snowblind trailer is 1:30 mins =)

Hm, these days, i saw a trailer of the new Thor-movie. 4, 5 or six minutes of movie scenes. I stopped the player after roundabout one minute, because for me, a teaser should tell the people that there is a damn cool movie on the way, and a trailer should kick my ass and say: ok, dude, stop staring at small youtube-clips, go out and SEE THIS MOVIE. I don't like trailers with the length of a tv show telling me the whole story and showing me the best scenes of the film accompanied by the original main score theme.
...
INCEPTION might be a good example. Ok, INCEPTION is not a grindhouse-movie, but it's trailer was a sneak peak into this dreamlike world, and i think nobody really understood what it's all about. So, if you can, try to make the Snowblind-trailer a hell of a rough ride. And keep me in the dark ... i like that.

I also think the whole thing would be over after 45 seconds ;P Also, our duel isn't really THAT long. We haven't even shot close ups of the eyes... FAIL! We were sure we had done that but they were nowhere on the tapes... Oh well.
BTW you can get a short glimpse of the duel situation at the end of the Mashup-Trailer. That's basically it, only that it's much longer in the film of course. But it's not that impressive either, I'm afraid... : /

That would be cool for a teaser, not for a trailer...

Great Task!

Thanks! This is an awesome task.

---

Love the guitar string breaking in the cold on the gun shot and turning electric. All in all Mango's storytelling...

My suggestions for the title cards :

1. The GreenScreen/GrindHouse Make A Baby
- A Slaughter House Post-Op -

2. PostApocalyptic Spaghetti Western
(A Baked Alaska :P (just joshin' yah))
(A Siberian Mist - hahahah! sorry.)
(A Rocky Mountain Western?)
- A Grizzly Western -

3. Sex and Violins
...Er. Yeah.

4. A Love Triangle W/A Body Count
(keeping w/ the musicality theme - a triangle is also 'the instrument'
- A Bloody Love Triangle -
(maybe you could introduce the instrument into your sound track)

5. OK Kids, Big Finish
- A Body Count -

6. Snowblind
-Snowblind-
- Heatseeker -

7. So tell me! Is the legend really true? ...

If I had the material I would...

CHAPTER I : "Love and lust"

.. concentrate on the theme of love and lust. Who does what and why (Clayton, Naina, Matthew, Barbara, governor and marshal)

CHAPTER II : "The honour of the backstabbing sonovab*tch"

Honour : The wondering and knowing about who was ordered to kill who and who still letting them sleep in their barn.

Then the porch about the back shooting

Then the scene where Clayton remembers the porch conversation

CHAPTER 3 (yes the number intentionally, you know why): "The guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people with guns."

Then the big finish with guns blazing with scenes at your liking.

MANDATORY SLATES Of your liking

TITTLE SLATE

EPILOGUE: booby trapped mines kill pregnant women with motorcycles.

the fate of Barbara.

LENGHT : 2 minutes to 2 minutes 30 seconds

Boy this is hard to do without giving too much spoilers :)

Don't do your trailer like that example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU4TQ1NTo50&feature=related

There are so many things a trailer nowadays must avoid in that example. ;)

Kalle Max Hofmann July 30, 2010 13:24 Flag

Hehhe that really would give some bad spoilers ^_^

I mostly try to avoid watching trailers when a movie interests me, because they ALWAYS give away at least something. I would like to try and avoid that same mistake, on the other hand it's hard to get people's attention... I mean we're not Chris Nolan after all ;D

In all, the style you suggested also sounds quite "epic". I would rather have a kind of "short and sweet", and fresh, kind of thing... but it's really hard to come up with something catchy!

Keyword: Legend

In the last trailer I saw was one final sentence pronounced:" Tell me is the legend really true!"

One could consentrate to that in the movie more. The legend is an essential part of the story. The final trailer could start with that sentence. And thus make the audience to wait for the legend to be told, and expecting to find the answer when watching the movie.

For me it was the thing that could be reminded from time to time during the movie, the importance of the legend.

I say nothing more not to spoil the film for those who have not seen it so far.

Thank you for letting us see Snowblind in Wreckamovie festival. It was really nice to see the film. It does it's trick very well: I was grabbed into the world you have created, the sceneries saw so authentic and it was nice to see the tricks of graphical postprocessing. Any subtitled versions available soon? Or is it worth a shot in Wreckamovie to create those subtitles for Snowblind?

Actually, our first idea for a trailer (a year ago) was to start with a slate "A LEGENDARY GUNFIGHTER"... then showing some shots of Clayton... "A LEGENDARY HUNTER" ... showing Matt, "A LEGENDARY MADMAN" followed by the Governor of course, and then the Text "AND ONE WOMAN", introducing Naina. And then, all hell would break lose ;P

So it's interesting that you had the same idea. Only problem is, we had to lose the line "is that legend really true?" from the film, because the test audience demanded the last bits leading up to the showdown should be shortened.

Anyway, one could definitely do the trailer like that. The only problem that remains is: It sounds like big-ass hollywood style... somehow, the tongue-in-cheek style has also to come through, like in the "mashup-trailer"... really not easy ^_^
