Description

Okay, there's lots of stuff, historical or otherwise, that could be in the movie or left out. What scenes you definitely want to see (or not)?

Already in the draft script (for example):
- Shot through the scope (must have one of these in every sniper movie).
- Häyhä winning a marksmanship contest while teenager (and that's about everything we'll see about his youth).
- Häyhä sniping Soviets up from a tree (never would have done this in real life, but... yeah, this is not going to be a documentary).
- Obviously in: artillery strike tearing his coat, exploding bullet in the jaw at the end, etc.

Stuff that will be left out:
- Everything between 1941-2000 (post-war hijinks are left for a sequel?)

More White Death stuff and nonsense!!

Here are another small list of "wants" from me!

We have a sitiuation where a grenade destroys his rifle and the Reds find it shattered and the snow sprinkled with blood. They believe that they have him. But as he scrambles through the snow to his hideout for a new rifle he leaves false trails for his pursuers.

As he travels he uses his knowledge of the land to lead them into dead ends, makes them fall into hidden snow crevices and gets them to cross thin ice, creates avalanche etc.

Oh, now i think about it, could we get a half track chasing him and for some reason he stops about half a mile ahead and they stop, concerned its a trap. But they pile on full ahead as he suddenly turns and starts running away. Only their tracks just spin on the ice under the light covering of snow. They keep pushing the revs and try getting it going. But slowly the heat of the rapidly spinning tracks and wheels begin to melt the ice, they dont notice, until they suddenly plunge through......

Also he lays under a sheet for a day as he is eventually covered in fallen snow. He lets the Reds pass and kills some of the troops at the back with his bow. Or he takes up the perfect postion and he finds himself within the Red camp as they stop one night, and here he rises like a ghost in the night to cause chaos.

Oh, and every time he shoots a finger off the "Officer", he backtracks and collects them, only to nail them onto a tree for them all to see as they move after him?

I know that troops used to burn diesel under the fuel tanks of trucks because the fuel used to freeze overnight. Maybe he could sneak into the camp and drop a stick of dynamite in the tanks, ready for the next mornings explosion? :-)

Fun, fun ,fun!

How about filming two versions of the movie at the same time? Just upping the crazyness in two or three major scenes and you have an OTT Ramboesque one and a more realistic "true story" version....Could be a winner!! :-)

Marko Naumanen June 15, 2010 14:08 Flag

Now it's turning into a Crocodile Dundee in Finland. :D There's clearly two different directions this movie could take: a fantasy war movie closer to the original material, or Rambo-like action movie. I have a pile of stuff written for the former, but the Rambo movie seems like it would be fun too. A sequel seems inevitable.

White Death II: The Continuation War. Häyhä is working on his new farm, when an army officer comes to see him: "We want you to go for a top secret mission behind enemy lines... to assassinate Stalin." (The real Häyhä wasn't in the Continuation War due to his wound, but that's just the official story.)

A hint at a background

I don't know if this suits the style of the script, but one possibility is to see some hint at the sniper's background, about his humanity.

For example a lot of war films have a soldier looking at a photo of their wife or girlf, maybe something along those lines. It doesn't tell you everything abotu them, but it tells you that they have a life elsewhere.

Marko, that sounds like a great scene! Put that in the film...

Good point. I haven't given much thought for this yet. The real Häyhä never married and there's no mention of any GFs either. There's a scene in a book *Valkoinen kuolema* where someone points to a picture on the wall and says "There's a bride for Simo", but Häyhä says something like "I already have one, I don't need a second one" and points to his rifle. I guess I see him as a kind of lonely samurai who lives for his art and country.

shadow

Would like to see a scene where he uses his suomi mp, show that he is not just the average sniper. Russians fighting to get close to the point where he is voulnerable, and finally gets to his position. There they find his rifle left behind. Now, since this movie is to make him sort of a superhero, how about that scene can be like the "shadow" bunch of russians, and in the snow covered forest you hear laughter. The russians whisper "white death"..laughter stops, you hear a gun being cocked then they hear, " are you ready? here I come"(or something like that)

After the carnage, a thing that could be cool, is you zoom in on the suomi gun, have a technical breakdown rate of fire etc, primary role: mayhem & destruction

(I allready knew he used one but admit to have checked wiki for it just now, and credits him with 200 kills with it)

As for the shadow thing, first part of this trailer demonstrates what I meant:

I like that:-) I am just throwing ideas around, your description of the movie just reminded me of the shadow;-)

I'm saving the Suomi KP for the final showdown. "Now I have a submachinegun, ho ho ho." :) Okay, evil laughter or boast is a bit too much out of character. Like you said in an earlier comment, Häyhä is just doing what he does, mostly oblivious to the fact that the Reds see him as a unstoppable killing machine. They are scared because they never see him or hear him, the bullet comes from nowhere and hits you before you hear the sound. Or if they actually see a glimpse of him, it's just a white coat and mask with two black holes as eyes... But when they do see him in full force at the end, he mows down 40 guys with a Suomi KP while staying behind to cover his retreating buddies.

Shooting. Death. Stuff.

Always liked the idea of a a large unit of mobile infantry with tank support seeking a "lone gunman", heavily outnumbered but using his skills to overcome them. Here are some scene ideas (in no particular order).

He uses his local knowledge to lead the unit into wolf/bear(?) territory where they spend a sleepless night listening to howling all around them as they randomly shoot into the night etc No one sleeps and makes them all edgy the next morning.

In the morning light a pair of soldiers spot a dead wolf. They congratulate each other and go over to cut its head off as a trophy, but of course its booby trapped and explodes. The wide eyed head of one of the soldiers lands on the bonnet of the officer in charges vehicle.

A single shot through the drivers eye slit of the tank brings it to a shuddering stop. Inside blood and brains splatter all the inhabitants. The tank commander tells the gunner to get the body out and to take his place. The gunner simply stares at the commander for a moment and then at the almost headless body of the driver, then looks back again at the commander. He wipes away a large peice of flesh from his chin, "F**k that", he says. The commander pulls out his pistol and tells him, drive or die. The gunner smilingly tells him that if he does shoot him, the tank will be useless as no one else can drive it. The commander nods. We sharp cut to the tank commander sitting in the passenger seat of a troop carrier and over his shoulder we see snow already covering the stationary and silent tank. "Peasants" he says to himself as he lights a cigarette.

The Tank Commander (who sees himself as above the common mass of soldiery, regardless of what communism says) could be the lead bad guy. Throughout the film, we see that he could have been shot buy the sniper many times. But instead, he simply chooses to shoot a single finger off each time. Throughout the film, his madness is racked up each time as the commander looses digit after digit. His men realise that this sniper is almost superhuman in his skill. The mixture can only aid the sniper.

Good ideas! I actually had two characters in mind. The first one is a frustrated commander, who's ordering counter-snipers and artillery strikes and nothing works. I might expand this character based on your ideas. The other character is an unlucky russian soldier (a comedic relief of sorts) who is always sent on these missions as a guide and after witnessing Häyhä's skills three times he's a complete nervewreck.

various things

First of all, I dont think Simo used a scope at all:-) If a scope scene is needed, how about that was his experience with it, and afterwards, he throws it away?

he always made it clear the he killed because it was his duty, him dismissing praise for this reason, followed by cuts of russian troopers talking about him in more and more supernatural fashion.
Have to have a big scene of the russians sending out special squads to get rid of him, to no avail.

A cool thing could be a kill counter that runs at scenes through the movie, always racking up kills.

Yes, Häyhä used only iron sights. What I meant was that a Soviet sniper uses a scope and Häyhä shoots him in the eye through his scope. I'm thinking this happens in a scene where the Soviets send a group of counter-snipers after him.

I like the kill counter idea. A special version with a kill counter should be made at least.
