Description

_Iron Sky is set in the near future – 2018, to be exact. A lot of things have changed here on Earth, but mainly everything stays the same on the outside – just like ten years ago compared to present day._

The task is to think what has changed. I’m taking all kind of ideas – an existing and most propable future visions to more imaginative and crazy ones.

But keep your head cool – one thing I always say when I describe future of 2018: no flying cars. Maybe that gives you the overall tone of the future.

Expected submissions: everything from two-word descriptions through reference images and all the way to sketches and production paintings.

Hydrogen fuel, etc...

Due to recent japanese patented inventions - in 2018 cars with plain water- or gas- based hydrogen fuel cells will be mostly in use, i think. So on - gas stations ad's must picture not gasoline prices, but water and hydrogen instead... after that - the fighterplanes already can be unmanned bots, as many other things like city public transport... then USA can be already merged with both Canada and Mexica, forming the USONA - United States Of North America... with the money name of "amero" for example...

Corruption rules in 2018

In the competition on perfectionism the "remodelling" through plastic chirurgy of less lucky creatures stemming from the gene pool that fled the earth is a puplic secret - maybe too because "no oil - no plastic" makes it hard to improvise for surgians "reparairing". Based on knowledge of such "corrections" übermenschen are being black-mailed - and the leaders have ordered that every public figure has to wear an exact same "body cream" and "body powder" make-up to ensure that "corrections" cannot be detected by the public. Not seing who's real and who's not drives corruption and angst.

I am not sure I understood your idea about corruption, and blackmailing. Could you elaborate it a little bit, please?

Brave new World

"oh, brave new world!" - Aldous Huxley, anyone?

Not to steal ideas, but certainly as a reference point, I think Hitler would have liked to have the perfect beings and probably would have invested heavily into cloning as a way of creating the perfect Aryan. However, cloning is not perfect... anyone care to elaborate on this idea, I would really like to know what you think!

I think Hitler will invest a lot in genetics to make "real germanies". That should not mean, that he wants to clon people.
I think he will to modify the DNA of the babies so that they have blue eyes and blond hairs. ... just German

Tuomas Kaikkonen June 03, 2008 19:59 FLAG

Well, the Earthlings probably have taken the genmods on to new height. Think of today's plastic surgeries, boob-jobs, penis enlargements, etc. The brave new world of 2018 probably has their own genmod doctors who will make your body parts bigger, better, and more beautiful, just that what the exact new "fad" or "fashion" is is debatable.

Glossary:
genmod = genetically modified body part

Now, for A. Huxley (same initials as A.Hitler :) ... I have not read Huxley's books, but I recall reading some marketing abstract on the back of the book. I recall his future had leaders genetically engineering servants who were "happy" doing the manual labor they were "designed" for. This is modifications to their "genetic hard-wiring of the brain" if you can pin-point such a thing. Or perhaps it was about brain-washing them since childhood for some task. I think the brain-washing part could go with the Moon-Nazis quite easily.

Simon Horrocks June 03, 2008 13:16 FLAG

Bored of cloning. Why is cloning the subject of every damn scifi concept? zzzzzz

I agree that it kind of connects to the Nazis desire to breed the perfect Aryan, but the Nazis were also big romantics and that shouldn't be forgotten. In other words, they had this glorified fantasy world vision of the "master race" who were NATURALLY superior (ie: they wouldn't need any kind of scientific enhancement) to other supposed "races".

In reality, there is no such thing as different types of human "race". We are all the same. But are the Nazis still living in their deluded fantasy? Presumably. I think the idea of cloning the 'master race' would have been distasteful to them. Clone some subhuman slaves, maybe.

The Nazis were big naturists and were ahead of their time in terms of protecting the environment (didn't they make laws protecting their forests and such like?) How would the Moon Nazis deal with the lack of nature on the moon - build big artificial forests?

As far as the effect of reduced gravity on the bodies of generations of Nazis brought up on the moon - I like to imagine they would come up with monstrous, industrial-looking machines to deal with such things (visually, it strikes builds on the theme of "Iron Sky").

How about if everyone sleeps (or spends part of their day in) in a big centrifuge?

Stephan Krabbendam May 27, 2008 20:55 FLAG

Good thinking, but you're forgetting one thing. The Nazis were quite fond of experimenting extensively, and preferably not on their own (but extreme circumstances call for extreme measures). As we all know, thousands and thousands of people were killed this way. But how many Nazis actually took off to the moon? Couldn't have been more than a handful, maybe a few thousand or so. That wouldn't have left them much to experiment on. They would have taken great care with every subject, of course, but still - could they have come that far with so few test subjects (and so few means)?

One way to solve this would be to have them create clones - lots and lots of them, expendable ones, like in the 'Star Wars' prequels.

Christoph Lakner May 27, 2008 11:42 FLAG

their "radical" researchmethods would have resulted in a more advanced medical knowlege. mostly in injurytreatment and pysical developement.
living on the moon vor seven decades with 1/6 of the usual gravitation would leave the current generation of nazi-soldiers high grown weaklings with glassy bones without any stamina. prakticably absolut unfit to battle earthsodliers on equal terms.
so the moonnazis would have to counteract the effects of the low gravity, maybe even turn that in an advantage.
i think artificial gravity is kind of far off.
so they would have genetic threatments and drugs, special trainingequipment to keep their bones and muskels on earthlevel or even push them above. in addition they could reduce the airpressure in their moonbases to simulate an high altitude training (and to preserve energie)
thinking of our ability to provide artificial replacement vor nearly every major bone in the human body, i would think it is not far off to think moonnazis would have even gone to the next level.
without ethical resentments they could have found a way to solve the problem that come with implementing foreign objekts into the organism. i'm not talking about startrek-borg but something like an eary forecast
(last moment of of the movie- a beatup-nazi-saucer taking of to the deltaquadrant ... just kidding ;) )

Stephan Krabbendam May 08, 2008 18:47 FLAG

The Nazis certainly were interested in genetics. Good point.

realism is important

Some ideas mented are really whilst others are sounding ver far fetched. whereas the nazis took off a long time ago, we can be VERY adventurous about them. as for the earth? well lets look back ten years ago- 1998. The spice girls and david beckam had popularity. Whats changed? tbh, not all that much. We had the internet back then and we just use it more now. What technology has really found it's way into the hands of the public in the last decade? It takes a pretty drastic event, say 9/11 to make a lot of change (anti-terrorist measures HAVE affected most people in one way or another). I cant even use the word 'bomb' (we used to say "we had a bomb of a time"/"it was a bomb"/"blonde bombshell") without sending a london tube train into panic and being detained by armed police.

so seriously guys. what *events* might drastically change the world (like viruses) and what might just be more exagerrated??

I like your thinking christoph! I think we can all take a leaf out of your book.

also china- the new superpower? or at least, in ten years time there could certainly be a clash between china and america! it's funny but america, the massively consumerist nation depends on the goods that china produces. if china were to with hold goods from america the uproar would be excessive. then again, china's economy depends on the consumerist nature of america. but with having such a high population density, if anyone had a reasn for world domination, china would have possibly the best. perhaps with north korea as it's long destructive nuclear arm?

And lastly, if terrorism does become a huge threat (although here in england london has /alWAYS had terrorism problems) perhaps that would spur groups like the neonazis to also commit such acts. I think the moon nazis are definately terror from outside, but the terror from within i think is closer than we might think!!

Christoph Lakner June 22, 2008 09:54 FLAG

if you look at mobilephones i would say the impact and the changes are massive. they morphed from big bones to small supercomputers. they changed the face of citys. not only phonebooths disapeared but you have strangely mumbling peolpe running free without someone calling vor mentalhealth personel!

sudden world wide desasters are most unlike to happen. even the meteroid that (most likely) startet the klimatic changes during the dark ages, like sudden drop in temperatures, drop in total sunlightquantity and drop in foodproduktion, didn't have the impact on the human race we like to imagine.

the chances will reside in the smal details. new york is the same city as bevor 9/11 but you don't have lugage-lockers anymore.
a interhuman transmittable birdflu might kill millions but the most residial chance would be the everydayuse of facemasks in the western world (similar to asia)
we had desastrous wars since WWII but they also made vor small not big changes.
even if we have war in iran and even if iran manages to use a smal atombomb and even if amerika has to withdraw from that war like in vietnam or korea, we won't have a maior shift in global politics. economy won the cold war, economy will decide the dynamics of global politik for at least 25 more years.

the biggest changes will be the spread of terrorism. new groups will rise with different goals. not only religion, left or right extremists, but also ecological and economical groups. terrorism might change into an insane sort of caotic robin-hood-like gerilliafight between small groups and governments and big busines.

Artificial intelligence & genetic algorithms

Even by now there's a lot of research going on on AI and genetic algorithms. Basically the tremendously increased computer power has already reached levels, where sophisticated computer software can learn and accomplish extremely complicated tasks by themselves. In 2018 there will be several applications, where computers won't be "running" pre-programmed programs anymore, but "learning" what to do and "evolving" programs for themselves on their own. The instructions given to the computers for doing so are called genetic algorithms.

Genetic algorithms are relatively simple pieces of software code, sort of "seed instructions", which just give the basic parametres to the computer on how to evolve. Once started, the algorithm will start evolving depending on the given instructions. If the given seed is chosen well, the algorithm will develop in a desired way, and the computer will learn the optimal ways of functioning. But even a tiniest change in the seed information may lead to completely different results - very easily to even catastrophic results! (Butterfly effect rules here...)

Genetic algorithms may be applied in forms of artificial intelligence, although also other types of AI do exist. However, genetic algorithms are often very unstable to the choice of seed information. Use of genetic algorithms will create completely new potential applications for using computer power. But they will also create potential for major misuse and catastrophs. Therefore giving genetic algorithms a role in the movie would enable major changes to the world of information as we know it.

Just consider a misbehaving network of supercomputers or a malicious genetic virus inserted to internet... You get it? The whole global information system might go crazy or collapse within minutes just due to a few (well) maligned bits! And that isn't even too unrealistic.

I know it's a completely different ball in the game, a very long shot to another direction.

However, with the information we have about the script for now it's just impossible to know, what actually might fit in to the script. It might well be another option the script would need for becoming much better. The team might well find such a twist in the script suitable for an additional surprising turn in the story. And this one would be relatively easy to include. And it IS a fairly realistic possibility.

Don Wilson June 23, 2008 14:10 FLAG

A bit off the mark in my opinion. If the movie goes in too many different directions it would lack cohesion. Nazis from the moon messing with our computers genetic algorythms? Too many balls on the court at one time to explain.

The Future is Now!

Future Ideas - 2018:

- The Nazi's return in the height of WWIII, but this time the Axis of Evil is the United States...making Germany the good guys.

- Many car manufacturing plants have closed due to help fund the war effort. Everyone drives cars similar to the Chrysler PT Cruiser (to mirror the cars of the '40s).

- The president is John Ellis "Jeb" Bush (George W. Bush's brother).

Jeb Bush would match as the US president. In the synopsis there's Jenna Bush, but she just got married and has already changed her name.

Killing dolls

China has introduced new deathly machines to warzone, killing dolls. These wandering little robot mines and assasins are cheap to product in masses and when dropped to combat zone, they soon make the area unhabitable by killing all humans. They have small blowgun for poisoned needles and in their small nanolaboratory they have receipts for several dozens deathly poisons for whatever substances they can find. With their sunpanels and batteries they can go forever. When forced to stop they blow off their selfdestruction charge. If they are trapped to box they soon find that out and....
But Afghan troops finded way to fool them by catching several of them to doughnut shaped pipe!

When examined several months, scientist found out "easter egg". Every 13. day of friday night some dolls randomly gathered and danced american line dance together and singed:
"I'm just a sneaking, leaping, reaping, shooting, killing doll...." (You can make more lyrics yourself)
This explained some odd reports of english singing little demons dancing in the deep forests.....

Unholy alliance

After Obama become the president of USA in his second turn they got peace contract between jews, christians and muslims. With his some way islamic ancestors and backrounds he got trust of islamic world of good and well meaning spirits of western world. Most islamic mullahs gave fatwa of peace between "people of book" and personal freedom to seek God and reponsibilty in the end to Allah. Unholy alliance for them are now true infidels, China, India etc.

Big bird flu epidemic in 2016 killed about 1 billion people, mostly white and arabic. West and islamic
countries accused China of manipulating virus. After that, war....

By 2018 Japanese, Chinese, and Russian investors start to cash in on the huge national debt of the USA. Because the US Govt has spent on deficit for so long, nobody wants to buy their G-bonds any more, instead US starts to privatize its public land and sell parcels to foreign investors.

California and Texas have broken free from the Union. Spanish is now the first official language of most of the southern states of the USA. All the so called "illegal immigrants" have been granted some sort of "amnesty".

American schools have failed its students miserably. Social security promises cannot be kept. Cost of health care and all failed reforms have caused millions of uninsured and uneducated and unemployed people to seek better future in the south and north. Canada starts to limit illegal immigration from the USA.

South American countries have united and most of them are running some kind of socialistic systems. Cuba has come closer to market economy and its citizens gain more and more freedoms each year. Since the death of Fidel Castro, Raul has failed to be the next true leader, and the CP has no other rising stars.

Japanese genetical engineers combined their efforts with the Chinese, Koren and Indian, where they can now safely control the number of childern, the sex of the child. All countries of the earth have adopted 1.5 children policy, where national lotteries give extra child to those who can affort them (read by enough lottery tickets).

Space Tourism

Obviously Virgin Galactic will 2018 be a market leader in private space travel, with entry level offers (round trip to the moon in the space equivalent of an Airbus A-380) starting at EUR 1945,-

Small charter firms are also in the business. Spaceventure Travel Inc., located in Dundee MI, is recruting pilots retired from the Indian space program. The navigation error of Moondeep Gupta actually leads to the first encounter between space tourists and Moon-nazis. Only because the tourists mistake the Nazi base for an exocit theme park, the are allowed to return unharmed.

ESP Police

Here is my view of a big USA or UK city street (see picture - artwork by me) with some background:
Heavy traffic as always, but cars use engines with mixed fuels: electrical, hydrogen solar and petrol.
In the artwork are portrayed a couple of ESP cops.
They patrol the streets with their unicycle bikes. When they stop a citizen they use a portable brain device to probe the "criminal orientation" of the suspect.
Because laws the citizen can't refuse this kind of control.
If the citizen is find a "potential criminal" he is arrested for some hours and bring to the nearest ESP station to be probed more deeply.
At the ESP station if the citizen is confirmed a "potential criminal" he will be quickly try by the SEC (Special ESP Court) and condemn to 15 days of domicile arrest.
After that he will be probed again and if find a "potential criminal" will be condemn again to other 15 days of domicile arrest by SEC, if find "clear" he can finally go free.

As you know monocycles like those in my artwork exist the the real world and (still) have the problems that you stressed, but they cam be very "cinematical", practically realistic, and interesting for the design in a futuristic movie as Iron Sky ;)
