Closing Note

Thanks for all the suggestions and shots, they've been really great! :)

We're going to close the task now as we've begun filming the office scenes, so we need to get the mockup covers printed.

Description

One of the characters in Overlap works for a trendy magazine that covers music, film and fashion.

This magazine has been going since the 1980s up to the present day, so 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010 photos and styles would be acceptable.

Their office will have old covers of the magazine on the walls.

-Can you design covers for this magazine? It has to be creative commons so we probably can't use any pictures of real celebrities, but if the picture is in the style of a celebrity photo that's enough.

-And/or can you think of a name for such a magazine which hasn't already been used in real life?

(If you can't think of a name but want to design a cover, just use the title "Overlap".)

Some real life reference images might include:

Okay I just watched this Star Wreck movie last week. Here is a quick shot just for the joke, as I'm probably gonna have to find a decent HD photo bank, that Energia would actually approve :p.

Indeed. Truly unforgettable. Sure changed my life! 8P

Everyone had fun on that shoot, it was an amazing experience. :)

Lemo G. August 27, 2010 23:54 Flag

Yea I saw some of those vids last week after finding those high-def images.
Apparently Angela and you had a lot of fun on this shooting =)

(null) August 27, 2010 23:14 Flag

"Erm, don't you think you're kinda overreacting here"

Well, I agree there is room for improvement but even this is pretty good. And I'm especially glad you understand exactly what we're looking for. :) You've got the right style.

"Also am I the only one who cares about Energia's copyright, or are they just cool enough to appreciate this kind of cameo? "

I am fairly sure Energia is not going to worry about copyright. :D They are fine with derivative works, and Star Wreck was released under Creative Commons anyway.

Heck, when the 2pi fan film started they even took part in the film themselves, and let the Gschwinds shoot the cameo scenes in Energia's own office:

(BTW you can see me at 1:35... ;) and Angela was there too.)

Lemo G. August 27, 2010 22:05 Flag

Erm, don't you think you're kinda overreacting here ^^'.
Also am I the only one who cares about Energia's copyright, or are they just cool enough to appreciate this kind of cameo?
This is supposed to be a 150dpi A4 format, and I can't go any bigger with the Star Wreck material, but if it's far in the background, I suppose people won't notice the pixels indeed.

(null) August 27, 2010 19:49 Flag

Effin' nora, that's just absolutely wonderfully splendidly splendid with extra sprinklings of splendid on top! :D

Wow. You've got this 100% right Lemo, well done indeed!

The plan is to print some of these as A2 posters for the backgrounds of the office shots. Perhaps this resolution might be good enough for that purpose? Obviously in real life it would look fuzzy but the viewers would only see it within a video.

Lemo G. August 27, 2010 14:11 Flag

Thx Angela, well yea that's the place where I found it ;).

Angela R. August 27, 2010 14:03 Flag

Brilliant!!!

Samples

Hi again, sorry for being so late, but school's been more busy than expected. Thought I'd give you two samples at least, so you can tell me if I'm going in the right direction or not.
The difficulty lies in knowing what to do, rather than how to do it.

As you can see, I haven't written any name for the mag yet. But I liked some suggestions.

Lizette, don't worry about being late, everyone on here is a volunteer so we just give time when we can. :)

We're probably going to close this task now so don't worry about the design, but thanks for the shot and there are still other tasks too.

Lizette Stenqvist October 22, 2010 11:44 Flag

Yeah that was sort of late and now I'm also late, sorry, I've been up to my ears in studies. I don't know if I'll continue on this, is it needed still?

(null) August 10, 2010 22:38 Flag

Lizette, I'm the one who should apologise for being so late with this reply.

I've been heavily involved with the Wreckamovie Festival in June/July, and then Assembly after that, so I am only just getting back to speed with my own productions.

Anyway, here's some feedback if it's not too late:

-The first one looks a lot closer to a good magazine style.

-I would avoid the military font or anything too "novelty", try to stick to more classic-style ones.

-Maybe the box with the text could have a slightly transparent background?

Angela would be better at giving feedback, she's a trained designer. I'll nudge her about this (she's been really busy too, amongst other things she was involved in the Festival and Assembly too).

Lizette Stenqvist July 19, 2010 17:45 Flag

Sorry for taking so much time guys, but I'm really feeling rather lost. Like... what am I supposed to do? Would really need more feedback because right now all my tried pretty much look like different magz due to the lack of connecting style or subject.

Name "Overlap" continued

Had this idea about the Overlap logo and while sketching it in Photoshop, had this urge (probably due to energydrinks) to continue it to a magazine cover. But now my free time's up so here's the result.

Magazines (for anyone) all pretty much cost about 5-10e. The only thing I can think of near 2e is Aku Ankka ;)

Angela R. September 19, 2010 10:00 Flag

I would love to help you guys but I cannot tell anything about the prices of such publications because I never bought any, either! Kris, how about you? ^^'

Hannu Hoffrén September 18, 2010 22:15 Flag

No, can't say that I've ever bought one of those. Wouldn't admit it here if I had though. :D

Yeah, I was wondering what I should put on the price tag. Then when the layout got to this point, it looked something more like those small daily or weekly newspapers than a magazine, so adjusted the price accordingly.

Sami Laulajainen September 18, 2010 13:03 Flag

Over-pal ?

Have you Hannu ever bought a trendy girls magazine... well forget that, It costs lot more than €2,90. Now I don't mean that I have bought one either :)

I don't think the purple is that bad.

Angela R. September 16, 2010 16:09 Flag

Yeah. A tad too much purple for my taste, too...

Still a good composition on its own, simply not quite what we were looking for, I believe. ^^

Hannu Hoffrén September 13, 2010 18:00 Flag

XD
Maybe there's "a tad" too much of purple, eh? ;D Ah well, at least it was fun to fiddle with for a while.

(null) September 13, 2010 17:48 Flag

Maybe it's the energy drinks, but to me this looks more like a nightclub flyer than a magazine cover? :)

Overlap Magazine (good name)

I'd seriously run with Overlap as the name of the mag... it had a good ring to it ;) Here's a sample idea... Kris, I hope you don't mind, I "borrowed" your image?!

"Why is the film called 'Overlap' by the way?"

Well... umm... you'd have to see it to find out. It's not just a random name.

Tom Morgan September 15, 2010 09:51 Flag

Glad ya like it ;) I think the name is irrelevant at this point... the only thing that I would love to stick with is the 'P' at the end so that the black box can stay there.

I can of course change the name for you later if you wanna use this design but I don't have any suggestions for alternative names.

Personally, I don't see an issue with Overlap being used as the name of the mag and the movie, the "overlap" between the two is kinda cool :P

Why is the film called 'Overlap' by the way?

(null) September 13, 2010 11:30 Flag

Tom, that is absolutely brilliant! :D That really does look like the kind of thing you'd see people flicking through in Hoxton or somewhere.

And removing the headlines also removes the slightly tricky plot issue of whether the magazine is in English or Finnish.

About the name, on the one hand Overlap is indeed a pretty good name for a mag and isn't taken, but on the other it can get annoying when the name of the film is mentioned within the film itself.

Tom Morgan September 10, 2010 07:44 Flag

Yea, they're different issues of the same mag :) The arty shots are much easier to find than studio pics too... actually, the b&w pic is my band so that was simple to find!

I wouldn't bother adding content headlines to the mag covers... the only reason they have them in the shops is to advertise what's inside. If you subscribe to a magazine such as Wallpaper, Creative Review, etc. you always get a copy without content headlines :)

Angela R. September 09, 2010 23:35 Flag

Brilliant work! I cannot choose, they're different and yet both equally awesome. Different issues? ^^

Lemo G. September 09, 2010 23:27 Flag

Now This is trendy.
I have to say it works better indeed with those "arty" shots than the "studio" ones I used.
Cool layout as well.

time?

Sounds like fun! What timespan do we have? Does the mag have any genre? Like 'hip' 'old' 'extreme (fashion/music)' ??
Also, old covers, does that mean like from the 60's or does it just mean that it's not super recent?

Okelidokeli, thanks.

(null) June 06, 2010 01:07 Flag

Lizette, if you are just doing a rough mockup almost any resolution is fine as long as it is roughly A4 shape.

For the actual film we'd probably want it to be high enough resolution to print on A4 paper. We're also thinking about printing some real magazines for promotional purposes, so that would be another reason to do a full resolution version.

Lizette Stenqvist June 01, 2010 15:56 Flag

Hey btw I forgott to ask, what resolution do you want it in?

(null) May 20, 2010 11:48 Flag

There's no specific genre, but I would say fairly bright popular culture, like the reference images in the task.

Stylish, bright, but not totally mainstream.

Lizette Stenqvist May 20, 2010 11:38 Flag

Okay cool, I'll be on it in a short while. My life will be hectic until the 25th, but after that it's more chill.

Though since it's young-ish people, I would really need some directions on style. Is it an underground mag, rock, pop, punk, metal?
Would really be nice to know what impression it's supposed to make.

(null) May 20, 2010 10:31 Flag

Timespan: There's no rush, take your time. :)

Genre: The magazine would be like the references above, aimed at young-ish people but not necessarily only for them.

Old covers: Hmm... okay, let's say that this magazine has been going since the 1980s up to the present day, so 1980s, 1990s, 2000s photos and styles would be acceptable. I'll add that to the task description.

ideas for names

Okay, it's not very creative yet, but maybe I can figure out better things (the big problem, ist that all good titles exist already : (

-Tren&Sty (kind of recombination between trend and style)

-airstyle

-visual style (in fact a word of microsoft)

- Hear&See

-the looker (from the expression "to be a looker")

-see the trend

-That's New

-T'Mag (abbrevation of "the magazine")

-STMF (Style, Trend, Music, Fashion)

- Upface-Downface (yes...I know, stupid idea)

-Timeline

-UPtoDATE

-Trend-Log

UPtoDATE should obviously include all kind of "useful" information about how to pick up a new partner... ;)

(null) May 23, 2010 16:54 Flag

Trendlog sounds the most likely candidate from there... :)

Looker sounds good too, but I just checked it on Google and apparently it's ah... uh... well I think it's the kind of magazine that Pirk would enjoy.

"(the big problem, ist that all good titles exist already "

Yeah, that's why we're asking for help, it's actually very difficult to find an unused good title! :)

Heh, now that IS trendy...

We can't be too trendy with the name though as the magazine is supposed to have been around for a while.

General Layout

Normally magazines have a general layout, with for example a typical titel and always the same characters or so...

Would it be necessary to create first a king of "main-layout" before different people create own styles?
