Description

3D models needed:
1) Trombone [Reserved for Richard Perkins, Shane Davis working on alternate version (both can be used)]
2) Trumpet [Reserved for Jonathan Eyre ]
3) Upright bass
4) Small drum kit (bass, snare, hi-hat,crash, floor tom, middle tom)
5) Piano (normal piano, not a grand piano) [Reserved for Janne Koski]

These are instruments for the dance band performing in the bar/refreshment area of the base. As all other props, the instruments should be credible in a 1947 context.

Post a shot on the task to reserve a model you'd like to work on. For general 3D-instructions see: http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/1166

As Risto said, very nice work! Looking forward to your model of the X-ray machine. :)

Looks good :D

All modelled out now and just got all the templates for the UV mapping, the above images show a blender material on the trumpet at the moment, is this the required coloring that your after?

The buttons ive seperated from the valves to give a pearl/marble texture like on trumpet and that is UV mapped, the 2nd image shows that. If you want a closer image of that let me know and ill sort that out.

Also if the community wants to give any feedback its always welcome. :)

You asked for advice, so here's some relevant points from our modelers:

---
The trumpet is a small round object so you can use around 12 vertices per edge loop. Each 90 degree segment should consist of four sections (5 edge loops).
Example pic on our modeler Hannes' server found here: http://imemua.com/90degrees.jpg
Like mentioned before, you should make all pieces such as the buttons and the valves of pieces separate from the frame.

Feel free to upload work-in-progress versions of the model, it helps us give useful feedback and you'll avoid extra work. :)
If you edit/update a shot, please post a comment on it, otherwise it won't appear on my dashboard or activity stream in WAM.

Avoid unnecessary edge loops, if a piece is straight it doesn't need edge loops in the middle.

---

Great work with the models you've made us so far and looking forward to seeing this one. :)

Piano

Started working on the piano.

Currently trying to work some details into it and making the textures.

The model should be ready and unwrapped in 1-2 days

EDIT 9.5:
Made some progress.

I'm now at 1736 tris for the whole set and wondering if I should try to go even lower or is this good enough.

As for the piano itself, the backside is giving me a headache. Should I get rid of that triangle shaped panel or leave it?

I already unwrapped the stool and I'm going to unwrap the piano it self tomorrow unless I make some crazy changes.

EDIT 11.5
So here it is unwrapped. There seems to be something weird going on with the smoothing groups and I'm not sure if the UVs made it through the exporting/importing process from Max to Blender. I also named the objects in a sensible way in Max but Blenders interface is just total mind fuck so I'm really flying blind here.

Anyway, the pixel density should be at least somewhat balanced. I tried prioritizing parts that will be more visible. I also stacked some UVs on top of each other to save some space in hopes that the engine wouldn't mind.

Obviously the textures are still missing. I might try force myself into making them in few days or so.

Risto's comments for the newest version:
---
* closed bottom for the piano
* add some thickness to the pedals

Nice work, I'll ask Risto to check it out asap.

On a side note, please post a comment on the shot when you update more info into it - I don't get any notification in my dashboard about edited shots, so the comment helps me spot updates. :)

Wow, lovely!

Risto Koskenkorva May 10, 2010 12:42 Flag

That is very nice (good tris amount as the policy amounts were in quads which contain twice as many tris :D).

Good looking, some comments:
* Leave the triangle shaped panel there
* Add a plane in the lid for the piano brand (if you already haven't)
* Extra version of the keyboard with separate white keys would be very nice (for possible animation purposes)

For further commenting and feedback, please attach the blender file of the object (easier to comment than from pictures :D)

The King Liberty Model Trombone

I gave this a shot, put 15minutes into it, just wanted to put a place holder until I devote more of my spare time to finish the model.

Trombone

I did a quick low-poly model of a trombone based on multiple reference images (mainly from the links provided by Risto)

Great work again, thanks!

Risto's comments attached:
---
Trombone:
* make everything closed
* the whole structure can have more vertices
* manual dual side fix (in this case I'm referring to the visible end of
the trombone -> you can see through it while in textured mode) -> extrude and scale -> extrude and mode and scale -> visible business end of the trombone)
* detachable mouth peace would be excellent

* excellent and elegant model (especially the end corners are quite smooth without taking much polygons)
* this object is really well optimized (you can use more vertices on this
piece easily :D)
* excellent measurements :D

References of the instruments

All instruments should be in use by the band (so no grunge but rather new or with a bit verdigris)

Rather good vintage instruments reference page: http://www.hnwhite.com/second%20page.htm

5) Piano (normal piano, not a grand piano):

* or maybe C. Bechstein http://www.pianoforteonline.co.uk/oxford_pianos_for_sale/bechstein_upright_piano.htm

These are just suggestions and references for the instruments. If you have ideas, fire away :D.

Oh and remember that you don't have to make all the models in this task if you don't want to. You can reserve one or couple if you want :D.
