Closing Note

Thanks a lot for everyone for participating on the task; unfortunately, we didn't get every letter through the task, and although we did get most, we were unable to use the exact submissions in the film. We did use the stylistic ideas, but had to unify them and have an artist re-draw them to be able to get what we needed in right schedule. So the task didn't go to waste, but wasn't possible to use it in the current form.

Thanks a lot for everyone participating.

Description

So, we have alphabets for the small children in school, hanging above a blackboard. Nazified alphabets, that is. Here's the list - next, we need good and clear ideas for the pictures.

Some actually already started to do those plans in earlier task - here's one good example:

http://www.wreckamovie.com/shots/show/5296

We need the ideas in a very clear form - and unfortunately, only

a) text descrpitions

or

b) your own, hand-made sketches or drawings

no photoshopping or links from the Internet, since we need to do original art for the film.

And remember, we need to be naivistic - like in school pictures. Clear, very simple, applicable to the children - like in the example attached here.

Again, here's the list and some suggestions for the pictures:

A – Adolf (Picture: Adolf Hitler)
B – Blitzkrieg (Picture: Stukas attacking)
C – Chemie
D – Dolch (Picture: SS Dagger)
E – Erde (Picture: Earth)
F – Führer (Picture: Führer Wolfgang Höss (played by Udo Kier))
G – Götterdämmerung (Picture: A big spaceship)
H – Hakenkreuz (Picture: Swastika)
I – Ideologie (Picture: Mein Kampf)
J – Jude (Picture: One of those 40's Nazi-drawn caricature Jews)
K – Kraut (Picture: cabbage)
L – Luger (Picture: Luger)
M – Mond (Picture: Moon)
N – Nationalsozialismus (Picture: ???)
O – Obersalzberg (Picture: Idyllic mountain landscape)
P – Panzer (Picture: Tank)
Q – Quartier (Picture: Spartan Nazi quarters)
R – Reich (Picture: ???)
S – Schutzstaffel (Picture: SS logo)
T – Totenkopf (Picture: SS Totenkopf -skull emblem)
U – U-Boot (Picture: Submarine)
V – Volk (Picture: People sieg hailing)
W – Wehrmacht (Picture: Moon Nazi soldiers marching)
X – X-Strahlen
Y – Yankee (Picture: An astronaut with an American flag in the background)
Z – Zündapp (Picture: Sidewagon motorcycle)
Ä – Äthanol (PIcture of a Koskenkorva bottle)
Ö – Öl (Picture: Oil)
Ü - Übermensch (Picture: Muscular blonde man, ideal Aryan übermensch)

I know this is a much trickier one -

Maybe bullets instead of a chart?
They could be using mercury fulminate or a derivative, or just pack their bullets full of mercury...

Angela R. March 10, 2011 01:14 Flag

Cool idea, although possibly too complicated for a child. Although that may have been deliberate... just to show (once more) how crazy the moonazis are. ;)

F wie Udo Kier

Here are the best pictures I found of him.
I took the liberty to prep them a bit for editing.
I found it googling, so I don't even know if it's free :-(

I agree too, but this is a start.

Angela R. May 21, 2010 15:29 Flag

Yes, I have to agree on that. We'd at the very least need to know if he will be wearing a specific haircut or mustache!

Juho Savela May 20, 2010 14:24 Flag

I think that this is one of those images that needs more insight how Udo Kier looks like in the movie.

Seppo Hiltunen May 20, 2010 13:56 Flag

thumb up. It could be also perhaps that Führer can be expressed in a photograph, because he is something special. Just an idea.

Carl L. May 20, 2010 13:01 Flag

he does have the same eyes...i dunno.

Idea for Nationalsozialismus

Maybe the easiest way for finding a picture for nationalsozialismus is using the drawing for V (Volk). A heiling folk for N (nationalsozialismus). For V you could use Vergeltung with the drawing of a V2 (the black-white painted rocket).

Edit: I attached my pic of an V2.

But the V-weapons were a basic instrument of the propaganda in the last view months of the Third Reich, for the Nazis it was a "possibility" to reach the Endsieg.

Paul Schulz November 07, 2010 23:15 Flag

V2 for Vergeltung is not a bad idea, although I´d rather use this picure for "R wie Rakete" (german for rocket)

R wie Raumschiff

Raumschiff means starship in german.
Idea based on one rendering from propaganda section on ironsky.net

Would it be better to make a simplified drawing of the Valkyre starship instead of a rendering?

It's just a good idea, but look at the Ideas of the boss :), he said G for Götterdämmerung and R for Reich. I even prefer this version, just in case if the "Götterdämmerung" is a basic element of the movie.

PS: A simplyfied sketch of the spaceship looks better, I think.

@ the boss: Could you please explain the function or the importance of the "Götterdämmerung"?!

Kraut, yummy... Nah, just kidding:

The use of Kraut referring to Germany is a foreign stereotype. Germans use it ONLY to mock about themselves when referring to foreigners or when using english language (e.g. there´s a car club called the Krazy Krauts).

"Kraut" can have the meaning of "herb" as well

A cabbage would be rather translated as "Kohl", especially the one pictured here.

ideas on the letter K:
- KRAFT (power), maybe symbolized by a proper flexed biceps muscle?

-KÄFER: german name for a bug
Also referring to VW Beetle / VW bug although this car was called KdF-Wagen (KdF* car) back then.)
*= KdF was a nazi organization

- KARTOFFEL (potato). Speaking of stereotypes... the germans eat more potatos than cabbage.

Maik Bernstein July 28, 2010 13:11 Flag

Nice pic, but I think, it comes better from the side like... (http://tinyurl.com/39crxp6)

Juho Savela April 13, 2010 17:44 Flag

Yeah, this must be one of the most glamorous things to do for the movie, drawing cabbages : )

Fonts in the images

Sorry for spoiling the fun, but as far as I know, the Nazis forbade fonts like the ones used in the images for "R" or "P".

Sure, I know, everybody thinks, thats the good old german kraut-font, and I see the that clichés have to be served, but in my opinion it is historically seen wrong.

Edit:
Here are also some sources:
"The use of antiqua alongside Fraktur increased, leading to the Antiqua-Fraktur dispute, which lasted until the Nazis abandoned Fraktur in 1941"-
source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackletter#Germany

"Ein Erlass des NS-Regimes von Januar 1941 (Martin Bormann bezeichnete in Hitlers Auftrag die der "Fraktur" ähnlichen Schwabacher als 'Judenschrift') erklärte dann jedoch die Antiqua zur „Normalschrift“"

Personally I dig the font called "Potsdam" a lot.
The edgy appearance has something very strict and nasty, very Nazi.
In Berlin you still can find this type of font on S-bahn train station signs.
http://www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/forsten/ausflugstipps/de/2005/pix/05_10_01_gr.jpg

It´s freeware and can be downloaded here:
http://www.fontspace.com/manfred-klein/potsdam

Only thing I fear is that this font may be too strict for a classroom.

PS:
Being historically correct (fraktur fonts were forbidden in early 1941 as they resembled the "jewish" Schwabacher too much) one should use the Antiqua font.

Carl L. May 18, 2010 03:35 Flag

So, what font would be best?
I'm sure we could settle on a standard.
(open-source font please)

Go ahead and post examples! :-)

(null) May 17, 2010 18:07 Flag

Yeah... we ought to remember that these aren't historical Nazis, they're the descendents of historical Nazis in 2018. There would almost certainly have been cultural changes of some kind as a result of living on the Moon for so long.

Jani's idea is a good one, perhaps they miss old German culture and gothic fonts are part of that?

Jani Salomaa May 17, 2010 17:58 Flag

Good point, Boris. Although they did use the kraut-font in their propaganda posters at least until 1940...

This might be one of those times where historical correctedness should bow to the cinematic functionality... That germanic font is so recognizable, that it just fits the mood of the film.

Or by 2018, the Moon Nazis have had plenty of time to reconsider. Maybe they started to miss the good ole kraut-fonts :)

R - Reich

Based on the Idea of Stig-Magnus Gjerald

Edit: 2nd Picture is also based on the drawing by Angela Ruggero for E - Earth

Edit2: Maybe you could change the idea for E for earth to E for Euthanasie, or to E for Endsieg. I will made a sketch for both of them.

i like the first one!

Juho Savela July 31, 2010 07:16 Flag

Wel, for me panzer IIIs or IVs are ones that comes to mind from word Panzer. Newer designs are better known by their names. Again for me, grey is iconic color for panzer, so i chose panzer III as many of those were painted grey.

S-35 picture is joke for those who know history of that tank, it's kinda last thing you could imagine to represent word panzer that still is panzer. German used S-35 tanks in numbers.

Whole point is: "Why on *Earth* moon nazis would use french design to represent word panzer?"

Ville-Veikko Perintö July 31, 2010 06:55 Flag

Have you noticed that the second tank is a French made Somua S-35!! Thats not an appropriate solution to use enemy tank design.

Why not rely real notorious German designs such as Tiger or Panther, Jagdpanther or Hetzer or even the gigantic Maus??

Jani Salomaa May 10, 2010 21:24 Flag

Second one mos def;)

Juho Savela May 10, 2010 17:23 Flag

I dare you to use the second one : )

Juho Savela May 10, 2010 13:25 Flag

I'll keep those points in mind next time I revise my alphabet shots.

Jani Salomaa May 10, 2010 13:18 Flag

Very scrumptious (where did that word come to mind!!?)!

How about a bit lighter grays to show off the detail you've put into it? And maybe the military insignia at the side?

I admire the work you've put into all of this alphabet! I'm just a chronic nitpicker..
