Closing Note

Ok, everyone! I'm happy with the Nazi alphabets for now - great work, indeed! Here's the final list - next, let's start planning what to draw!

B – Blitzkrieg (Picture: ???)
C – Chemie
D – Dolch (Picture: SS Dagger)
E – Erde (Picture: Earth)
F – Führer (Picture: Führer)
G – Götterdämmerung (Picture: A big spaceship)
H – Hakenkreuz (Picture: Swastika)
I – Ideologie
J – Jude (Picture: One of those 40's Nazi-drawn caricature Jews)
K – Kraut (Picture: cabbage)
L – Luger (Picture: Luger)
M – Mond (Picture: Moon)
N – Nationalsozialismus (Picture: ???)
O – Obersalzberg (Picture: Idyllic mountain landscape)
P – Panzer (Picture: Tank)
Q – Quartier (Picture: Spartan Nazi quarters)
R – Reich (Picture: ???)
S – Schutzstaffel (Picture: SS logo)
T – Totenkopf (Picture: SS Totenkopf -skull emblem)
U – U-Boot (Picture: Submarine)
V – Volk (Picture: People sieg hailing)
W – Wehrmacht (Picture: Moon Nazi soldiers marching)
X – X-Strahlen
Y – Yankee (Picture: An astronaut with an American flag in the background)
Z – Zündapp (Picture: Sidewagon motorcycle)
Ä – Äthanol
Ö – Öl (Picture: Oil)
Ü - Übermensch (Picture: Muscular blonde man, ideal Aryan übermensch)

Description

Round 1 was very fruitful - now, let's head on to part 2! I've chosen most of them, but we're still missing some. Thanks to everyone who collaborated!

Here's the alphabet list at the moment - and also pictures we'll attach to them. There's some ???'s there, there's one thing for you to think, too. What's the easy and clearly understandable picture to accompany the word)

A – Adolf (Picture: Adolf Hitler)
B – Blitzkrieg (Picture: ???)
C –
D – Dolch (Picture: SS Dagger)
E – Erde (Picture: Earth)
F – Führer (Picture: Führer)
G – Götterdämmerung (Picture: A big spaceship)
H – Hakenkreuz (Picture: Swastika)
I –
J – Jude (Picture: One of those 40's Nazi-drawn caricature Jews)
K – Kraut (Picture: cabbage)
L – Luger (Picture: Luger)
M – Mond (Picture: Moon)
N – Nationalsozialismus (Picture: ???)
O – Obersalzberg (Picture: Idyllic mountain landscape)
P – Panzer (Picture: Tank)
Q – Quartier (Picture: Spartan Nazi quarters)
R – Reich (Picture: ???)
S – SS (Picture: SS logo)
T – Totenkopf (Picture: SS Totenkopf -skull emblem)
U – U-Boot (Picture: Submarine)
V – Volk (Picture: People sieg hailing)
W – Wehrmacht (Picture: Moon Nazi soldiers marching)
X –
Y – Yankee (Picture: An astronaut with an American flag in the background)
Z – Zündapp (Picture: Sidewagon motorcycle)
Ä –
Ö – Öl (Picture: Oil)
Ü - Übermensch (Picture: Muscular blonde man, ideal Aryan übermensch)

As you can see, "C", "I", "X" and "Ä" are still missing - I think they are harder to come up. But as you can see, I'm trying to focus on words that are very easy to understand for anyone, and easy to interpret as a drawing.

Also, are we missing some alphabets from official alphabets that would normally be on this list? There was a bit of discussion on this, but I'm not sure if any German was able to confirm?

Here's the original task:

We're having a Moon Nazi school in the film. In the school, I want these alphabet cards on the wall above the blackboard - you know them, you've had them in your school.

Couple of ideas

C - Cyanide (Picture of a pill)

I - intoleranz, invasion

IngoZ February 04, 2010 18:43 Flag

Cyanide = Zyanid
Cylons = Zylonen

Sorry guys, but in German, most of the words ar written with a 'Z'.

David Jansson February 04, 2010 15:08 Flag

I didn't think about that. Sorry about my joke, in light of this it feels a bit inappropriate.

Martin: Zyclon B is the agent that the Nazis used to gas people to death in Auschwitz and other concentration camps.

(null) February 04, 2010 14:10 Flag

I don't think this is a good idea for Iron Sky.

I would seriously avoid any references to the Holocaust in a comedy film.

Tomáš Pytlík February 04, 2010 09:34 Flag

Invasion is a good idea. Maybe pictured little bit like this http://www.kypros.org/Occupied_Cyprus/cyprus1974/images/invasion/invasion_poster2_700_bg.jpg (with different flag of course) or as nazi solider on the top of ruins of some building in heroic pose with flag

David Jansson February 03, 2010 15:20 Flag

Cylons? First Nazis and now Cylons? We are all going to die!

I think there's no reason they wouldn't use Adolf as the first of the alphabets, since it's practically their Jesus H. Christ on the Moon :)

And as Angela noted, Führer and Adolf are two different persons now. And yes, we'll use Schutzstaffel instead of SS - you are right there, two!

Angela R. February 05, 2010 11:46 Flag

Seppo, I assume that A/Adolf will be different from F/Führer in the movie, as if I remember correctly, the 2018 Führer of the moonbase Schwarze Sonne, will be a guy called Wolfgang Höss!

So no confusion there. :P

Seppo Hiltunen February 05, 2010 11:31 Flag

There was in this tasks definitions that A=Adolf and F=Führer.

That is a little bit confusing for a kid learning the alphabet, when the card presnts the same person...

- Arbeit is a good suggestion. Thumb up.

Angela R. February 05, 2010 00:05 Flag

Yes, using "Schutzstaffel" rather than the acronym "SS" as official definition would probably be more accurate...

Remove ä,ö,ü

In German ä, ö and ü are not consider as indepenent letters (unlike in scandinavian language), so they should be removed from the Nazi-Alphabet.

Timo Vuorensola February 07, 2010 07:54 Flag

So we keep them :)

Thierry Gschwind February 05, 2010 09:31 Flag

If you take aany German dictionary, you find any dedicated chapters to ä,ö and ü. If a word start with one of these letter, you find it in the a, o or u section.

Drahnreb February 04, 2010 23:54 Flag

They actually are. When I went to German elementary school, the alphabet ended on X, Y, Z, ß, Ä, Ö, Ü.

Yet there is no word beginning with an ß.

IngoZ February 04, 2010 19:14 Flag

Do not remove.

Citation from the Duden (German Orthography, spelling dictionary):

Die Umlaute ä, ö, ü und äu werden wie die nicht umgelauteten Selbstlaute a, e, i, o und u behandelt.

The mutated vowels [...] are treated like the non-mutated vowels [...].

I’d like to add some suggestions and thoughts:

For one, I’d prefer D – Deutschland (picture: map with Germany in the borders of 1941 or so) rather than R – Reich. This would leave R for something more spacy, like ‘Raumfahrer’ or ‘Raumschiff’, with a picture of a Reichsflugscheibe e.g.
And Y – Yankee looks like a funny idea, with the astronaut and the Stars and Stripes, but no German would call an American ‘Yankee’. They’d say ‘Ami’, so unless you’d want to drop ‘Adolf’ and shift it to A, it wouldn’t seem very fitting to me.
Another idea would be to change S to ‘Sonne’, so you’d have earth, moon and the sun and make an additional SS – SS (with the rune symbol). I think, this would not be too far fetched, since many German words have the double-s in them and German typewriters during the war often had a special key for the runic-SS (only used for when “die SS” was meant, of course). It could have developed to a special letter on the moon, maybe even replacing the ‘ß’.

I like C – Chemie (chemistry, picture: test tube) and
I – Industrie (industry, picture: steaming chimneys), as were suggested
because they would represent the industrial component and
Ä – Ähre (if you chose to keep ÄÖÜ), because it would represent the
agraric component…
And unless you’d use the suggestion to take XYZ as one, I’d suggest to go with
X – X-Strahlen (‘Röntgenstrahlen’, x-rays),
Y – Ytong (a light form of concrete, used for building buildings fast, picture: brick).

Missing Alphabets

As a former native German this task was "right up my alley". Sadly There is'nt really that much to work with. Darn difficult letters left...

As I understand you want options I thought I'd give you some, but be advised that I've already ordered them according to my preferences (which you naturally need not heed...

Always:
German (English/Finnish) [submitters note]

C
General note: C is not easy as it is mainly a letter used in borrowed words in German. Sadly none of them have clear Nazi connotations.
Chemie (Chemical/Kemia)
Chinese (Chinese/Kiinalainen) [you already have the Jew, so another "untermensch" race might fit]
Christus (Christ/Kristus) [Depending on whether your moon based nazis practise religion]
Chef (Boss/Pomo) [always a useful word in authoritarian hierarchical societies]

I
Infanterie (Infantry/Jalkaväki)
Industrie (Industry/Teollisuus)
Ideologie (Ideology/Ideologia)

X
General Note: German language has very little use for the X, especially in the beginning of a word. The word I'm suggesting is basically the only real thing-word in German starting with the letter X.
Xylophon (Xylophone/Ksylofoni)

If that's no good, Depending on how cast-in stone the script is I'd suggest the moon nazis have (during their 70 odd years stay on the moon) developed a new word starting with X.

Ä
General note, the A-umlaut is more typically used in declinations (fin: taivutus) fo words normally starting with A. There are some words starting with Ä, which fit the original nazi symbolic ethos, but I wonder how well they fit the moon:
Ähre (ear(of barley)/tähkä)
Änderung (Change/Muutos)
Ära (Era/Ajanjakso)

HTH,
Pekka

Good - I think Ideologie would be the best to fit for letter I.

C for Chemie might work too - would need a good, clear picture thought.

Ä for Ära - why not. Needs a clever picture idea too.

X - Not found yet.
