Let the etiquette suit the task, rather than hobbling the task to abide by inappropriate expectations. Kris S., that writers must be thick skinned, is a perfectly common aphorism and the plain unvarnished truth. Moreover, if I am to work on spec. and anyone wants my help, then the necessary price is your cooperation in being helped and without being so touchy or cagey. Answers to my questions in the terms in which I frame those questions is exactly what is sorely needed here. So you each need to decide if you are willing to trust me, extend the benefit of the doubt, and play vall with me. It's still all about simply holding up your end of the conversation. Please just let me know. Christopher Carpenter, it's not just about individual pitching, but about meaningful and effective collaboration through discourse.
New Tasks has been added, giving everyone pretty much open writing. All ideas are welcome, be creative.
"This is nothing. Writers must be thick skinned."
Writers must be polite and constructive if they want to work with others, especially if no one is getting paid.
This is nothing. Writers must be thick skinned. And my question is about the protagonist himself, and enquires reply in terms as asked, in order to be of much help.
"And who is the protagonist, in order to respond differently than anyone else might, and how so? What are the protagonists skills, that must be only barely adequate to whatever challenges before him?"
I think the answer to that can be find in the summary. They are the good guys, who by the circumstance of commanding a powerful battleship is in the right place, being sent to fight the empire, to stumble into contact with people who would give them a different view. There is a lot of potential for drama here. Half the crew believes them, half does not, are the evidence overwhelming enough to sway the captain?
And Aaron, we have already been told that he wants to create the details of the story together with other wreckers. In light of this you are coming off as a bit aggressive. Be patient. :)
With that said, Christopher, it's really time to start a story task.
Frankly, it already seemed implicit that the assibilation must turn out to be an inside job. So, what are the consequences in causal sequence? How is that going to be a plot point?
And who is the protagonist, in order to respond differently than anyone else might, and how so? What are the protagonists skills, that must be only barely adequate to whatever challenges before him?
What is at stake and how is the outcome in doubt?
Are you going for the Bumpy forehead approach, a.la Star Trek?
Here is my preference for alien design:

That could be a possibility David. The summary I gave was pretty much the basic story. I do have some major character names and descriptions wit some other story basis, but that is basically it. The Makal are human like, but they do look a little different.
Maybe they will eventually get help from the Makal?
My true passion is creature design. :)
All, sorry for the lack of update, in the middle of getting ready for a deployment. With that said, I will try to answer all your questions and concerns.
I do have a general direction I wish to take this. I am writing a brief summary of the idea, then going to post it on here for all to read and tweak, make suggestions and criticize. A quick summary, after the assassination, the "Endeavor", being one of the major military vessels in the fleet, takes aim at the Empire. Through the events that unfold, Captain Daniels (Endeavor captain) and his crew learn from rogue missionaries and even members of the empire that someone high in the Federation government ordered the assassination. In their attempt to get back to Earth, they are meet by another Federation ship that cripples the Endeavor. The Endeavor attempts to repair the vessel and reach earth to stop the war and save millions of lives.
As far as the detailed script and such, I would like to collaborate with everyone on the project. I don't want to make this something just what I want. The ship designs I would like whoever is going to do them to use some creativity and adjust for the information about the different classes of ships I will be posting.
I hope this answers your questions, and if there is anything else, please let me know.
Christopher did make it sound like there is more already thought out about the story, but he's holding back on us since he wants it to be representable before he shows us.
Christopher: I think you are doing this backwards, we need to know more about the story to get the right inspiration to participate in design. We need to know more to have a fair chance to create something that will actually fit and you won't discard.
Honestly, from an artist perspective, working in the dark feels too much like a waste of time.
Anyway, I am here because I am a real sucker for Space opera. But I need to say, that the military conflict kind of space opera has been done to death on screen.
Read this anthology to get an inkling of how diverse and wondrous space opera can really be: http://www.amazon.com/New-Space-Opera-Gardner-Dozois/dp/0061350419/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265918131&sr=8-1
I need more to go on.
Well, maybe just come up with something yourself which could use the setting?
Allow me to begin by sharpening the logline:
In an alternate universe, a political assassination brings two great powers to the brink of war! But the General placed in charge after the assassination, comes to suspect that things are not as they seem.
Kris S., I can have no plot ideas to fill Christopher Carpenter's requirements, because none of his parameters are plot related to begin with, only somewhat generic set dressing.
I would really enjoy working on ship design I think. Please bear with me until my own Stick Wreck project is done though. (It's uses very simple design, but since I do more than 50% of the work myself it builds up to ALOT of work. http://www.wreckamovie.com/stickwreck )
Aaron, got any ideas for plots that would fit Christopher's requirements?
My own interest is in the writing, being clearly where you need help the most urgently.
I would like for the film to be pretty detailed, something like "Iron Sky" here on Wreck. Physics wise, I would like for everything to be as real as possible, nothing that people would say "That's just stupid."
What level of detail are we looking at?
Should the ships be designed with real or Star wars physics in mind?
The film's storyline is mostly about Drama and Action, but there is a love-love-betrayed arc to it as well. The rough script is current;y being written, once it is done, I will have others bring in their thoughts and corrections. The character traits and looks are done, still need to be typed up. All characters are humaniod looking, with minor differences. As far as ships, buildings and such, I would like to give the community free reign in the design of the ships, although, I do have what type of ships there are. Those will be posted as well. The end of the movie will be suspensful, and could cut off without actually ending. Sort of, wait for the sequel deal. I would like to get alot of people into this as possible, as I have no problem spreading the credit and all that it entails to all that contribute.
