That is what I thought. When the bolt is not going in all the way the way to secure it is to hammer it down. Remind the old proverb "Don't use violence, take a bigger hammer!" ;)
Or the bolt doesn't go in all the way, so he just hammers it around with his wrench 'til it's bent to be secure enough. Then when they take off, part of the landing gear falls off anyways, striking him on the head. ^^

This reminds me of the saying:
"System analysis is the process of finding exactly the right wrench to pound in the required screw."
There could be a sicle (crescent) too visible on that hammering scene.
