WW2-converted Victorian Fortress - England

Hi there,

Near where I live (East of London) there is a Victorian coastal defence fortress that was built to defend the Thames. It is called Coalhouse Fort.

It is now a very interesting and spooky looking building due to various bunkers and naval defence buildings added to it during the Second World War.

Many mainstream television programmes and movies have filmed at the site, including Batman Begins (the fort was used as the Chinese prison at the beginning of the film) and its underground tunnels and cells have been explored by ghost experts in 'Most Haunted'...!)

The fortress exhibits a combination of both well maintained, nearly new areas but also darker, abandonned parts that are nevertheless still accessible.

The fortress is owned by the local council and as far as I know they don't charge film crews to use it!...

There are many characteristic elements to the facility including huge metal shutter doors and a large courtyard for troops, vehicles or launch equipment. There are many smaller bunkers surrounding Coalhouse Fort, including lookout posts, standard pillboxes and a river mine control station.

Please see the pictures I have included and let me know if it can be useful.

Thanks,

Jack ;D
