Slowness

Is it just me, or is Wreckamovie real slow these days?

I don't think its my connection, Wreckamovie is the only afflicted page.

Could it be code optimised away, or is it a bandwidth problem?

If it's bandwidth, I for one am ok with ads for financing it as long as they are not animated. (And if they are animated you will make me feel like a crook as I will have to block them with Adblock or not be able to concentrate on my shots...)

It's been really bad today, WAM takes ages to load and often doesn't load at all.

When I do get through though the speed is okay, so it's like the problem is coming and going.

Joonas, might be worth a try?

Perhaps let Google, Yahoo and Bing/Microsoft, have access but block the rest, see if that helps?

Joonas Aarnio May 27, 2010 08:06 Flag

David, not sure about DDOSing, but we get quite a lot of errors from lots of bots (google, yahoo etc), and they might slow things down. Maybe we should just try to block others than google?

Yeah, sometimes it's fine and other times it's extremely slow (slow enough to be unusable sometimes). It doesn't seem to have any pattern, it changes throughout the day.

It never affects other sites, just WAM, so I don't think it's my connection.

Is there anything we can do to help you trace this problem?

I am starting to wonder if someone is DDOSing you?

Wreckamovie randomly gets extremely slow...

The site should be fast and responsive, nothing else is acceptable. So we need to hear that kind of feedback in order to keep it up. (and no problem commenting, have plenty of time here at the airport)

Peter, thanks for responding to this despite your travel difficulties! :D

(By the way I don't personally mind slowness that much, but I worry that it might put new people off using the platform.)

Will check into the slowness and get it fixed.

Posting has been really slow for me today... :/

Slowdowns have come and gone today... same problem come back maybe? :/

Yup, it seems better now Peter. Thanks to all the WAM staff.

Peter Vesterbacka February 10, 2010 20:32 Flag

We think we found the problem, the system should be much faster now.

Thanks Peter, and let us all know if we can help with tracking this down. :)

Kris, we are aware of the slowness and trying to figure it out. Hope to have it sorted soon.

Aergh, it was painful trying to do WAM today.

When it was working the speed was absolutely fine, the problem was that every so often it simply didn't load anything.

On one occasion I got an error message about a proxy server if that's any kind of clue to what's wrong?

There have been a lot of slowdowns for me today. As before, it doesn't affect other sites and sometimes it goes away.

David Jansson February 03, 2010 13:16 Flag

I think you need to restart the server again. Do you have backups? Because I think it was a matter of a hard drive dying on another site that had the same symptoms.

David Jansson January 31, 2010 19:33 Flag

It actually seems to work better now. And all it took was a reboot? Are you running a windows server?

Joonas Aarnio January 31, 2010 16:06 Flag

Same here. I rebooted the server just a few minutes ago, I don't know if it's just me, but it feels a bit faster now. We'll probably check into it anyways, if it continues to slow down.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. It can't be the connection because other sites work fine.

Could it be perhaps something to do with the embedded Facebook Connect or addthis.com links? They often seem to be in my browser's status bar when the site slows down.
