Anctartica Uniforms / Winter Colors + note on Black SS-Allgemeine Uniforms (M32)

I was watching the "winter" episodes of Band of Brothers just the other day, and could not help thinking that being the nazis very practical and paying the most careful attention to their gear and appearance they would be definitely wearing different colors than the standard dove- or field-gray (feldgrau) when operating outside the base... and perhaps for a good deal inside the base as well, at least when it comes to people operating on the levels closest to the surface.

So I have had a little Google session and came up with a few examples of German WWII winter uniforms / snow camouflage examples, to be possibly used as references:

Helmets with winter (white) camouflage paint:

MG 34 Gunner Eastern Front

This one is wearing a M40 Greatcoat with a torn bed sheet over the top used as make shift snow camouflage.

Schütze Rifleman Ost-Front: Winter 1943-44

(From: http://www.gdrecon.co.uk/uniform.html )

He’s wearing the then standard Wehrmacht issued 'Wintertarnanzug' camouflaged padded parka, hood and trousers set, currently reversed to the white-snow side for the wintry conditions.

Under an historical point of view, I must point out that (as stated in the same site, which I am merely quoting, being an uniforms amateur rather than an expert) the major problem encountered with these types of garments came with heavy soiling to the white reversible side with the consequential loss of the camouflage effect and the laundry issues associated with washing (and drying) these heavily padded garments in winter. For this reason, these were later replaced with pull-over white snow suits (of which I could not find any interesting pictures yet) although I do not exclude that the Antarctica personnel would not have much similar issues as the base must surely offer laundry facilities that can handle such clothing!

Anyhow, since we are on the subject: a last note on uniforms… just for your information… please keep in mind that the black SS uniforms were officially replaced by 1940, recalled and stripped of insignia to be sent for use by the native auxiliary police units and the Germanic-SS units. So even though they do look very cool, I would imagine we would not see them in Antarctica… unless we can come up with some simple logical explanation e.g. they are the new “space nazi” uniforms, re-introduced after 1945 since black can be considered as camouflage color in the darkness of space. Although I would guess that when having to settle on the moon from scratch, they may lack the resources to prepare new black uniforms and simply settle to use the dove-grey ones instead…?

And now the question…

Are there any uniforms experts around, willing and able to provide their opinions together with more useful insight?

I asked a bit from a few mates of mine and they suggested that one of the most battle-hardened and experienced SS-groups that acted during the wintery conditions was SS-Grupp Nord. This is the troup that held northern Finland during 41-44 and managed to escape with pretty small losses to Norway.

Now, I'm not familiar with their later stages, but at least parts of the group *could've* somehow been exported from Norway to be a part of this operation even before the Lapland war started.
This wiki-page is in Finnish, sorry about that, but the Finnish version seems to have a lot more detail in it: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/6._SS-vuoristodivisioona_Nord

Also, about their gear, I'm asking around a bit, but thus far haven't gotten anything majorly new. I'll post more if I get some info.

Edit: There are some re-enacters out there like http://www.gaissmair.net/ or http://www.6ssnord.com/ who could maybe be contacted to ask for advice?

Hmmm... weird. I've posted to the forum before asking advice on uniforms and people always seem to be keen on helping out of sheer good will. Maybe the fact my latest request goes with a game production behind its back makes a different? Yet, if they wish me to buy books, they could just say so. I wouldn't mind having a couple in my personal collection anyway, as I keep needing this kind of stuff for reference purposes. Will PM the administrator again, and see if there's any problem and whether a little purchase/donation would possibly motivate them to help more than credits and links alone would do. ;)

They are probably holding out on you so you buy their book.
User Vincent S. has offered a preview in a different forum:

Great, thanks Angela, hope we'll get some insights from the forums. :)

Seen no reaction from the forum admins about a collaboration came yet, I started a new general thread about winter clothing here:

Hopefully this will generate some additional references without upsetting anyone there... ^_^'

Great point!

And I think the Finns in the production team will find this very familiar, the Finnish army has always had white winter uniforms for obvious reasons.

I hope nobody minds, but I have decided to go "recruit" WWII experts through my favorite Axis-history forum...

Fingers crossed that someone may decide to help!
The more knowledge the better for the game quality... :)
