SS-Sturmhauptführer Von Niemitz

Allright, before you read anything more, I wanna point out that this character is very very loosely based on a good friend of mine who has allowed me to use a very similar name to his own and has collaborated with me to create this character. He is half Finnish, half German and is completely ok with you guys using a recreation of his name. Naturally not all of this should ever be used ingame, most of this is just a framework for a character, for people to work with. I am aware this is a bit bloated compared to the others, but bare with me.

Freiherr Fabian von Niemitz, 32 (29.12.1915), aus Berlin

SS-Sturmhauptführer Von Niemitz

”Oberst Nimitz”

General: Black hair, brown eyes, so not the perfect Aryan, but inspires to be. Clean shaven and cut. Has a very high level of education (knows good English for example) and comes from an aristocratic family. Before the war (or actually before he joined the nazi-party, more precisely) he was a posh upper-class German, tending to the Berlin socialites in a hotel their family owned. Was dreadfully bored of his role in the family business and decided to get into politics. When the first chance arrived, he recruited himself to the army and rose to the SS. Has official officer-training, which took a good long slice of his youth away. Therefore hasn't actually ”lived” that much, more or less worked and tended to his duties from since he was 15. Reads a lot, classical Greek, Roman mythos and history, great poets etc. Very high standards.

1)Captain of the guard company stationed at the base. Considered by some of his superiors to be one of the most loyal men ever to serve the Reich and therefore given a very responsible duty. Would normally have been on the western front defending the motherland, but was injured in the shoulder some time right after D-day and during his time in the infirmary was discovered to have a brilliant mind and given a more demanding task. Has met Hitler in person, once, very briefly, but is still very very proud about it.
As he is the captain, he delegates most of his responsibilites on, but is very much in control of the operations his unit does and is almost always on top of things to the very last minute detail. Is very specific and demands a lot from his men. Pedantic even, some might say. Considers himself to be something more than just a captain and has imagined a great future for him and his unit. Sometimes steps over the limits and thinks he has more power than he really has, but when this happens his superiors are quick to remind him of his place (The main character could probably hear shouting going on from the other side of the wall when his superior bashes him after this guy has tried to communicate with the player or something else like that).
His men call him ”Oberst Nimitz” behind his back, because he acts all high and mighty before them. This derigatory term of course implies his rank to be a lot higher than actual, for those of you who don't understand German.
2)As much as anyone can be. The very few little doubts and nags he does have about the way things are run, he keeps to himself (and maybe scribbles something in his little black book). An up and coming officer of young age and has many ideals about the new world order once the nazis get their rightful place as leaders and start refining the race of man. A dangerous man, but at the same time cunning and coercive.
1.Therefore I see that he would try to speak to the player before actually engaging him with any weapons fire. (Could easily be used as a ”miniboss” of one level or something like that) First contact could be through the PA if the character has been causing ruccus somewhere and the first you hear of him could be an announcement about a breach happening at the facility and alerting his guards to their stations. This could be followed by the player hearing some waking soldiers complaining about the ”oberst” and his endless drills and how he's too anal about his work. Naturally he would've run drills like this before (claiming it was the real deal), so the soldiers would just think it to be one more useless hassle and the player could actually continue his life ”normally”.
2.He is meticulous about his outfit. Despite the fact that his left arm doesn't really function like it should (can't raise above shoulder-level), he always keeps his outfit perfect and whenever possible, keeps his cap on. This is due to his reclining hairline and small bald patch right in the middle of his head, of which he is ashamed. The uniform is one of the things he considers very important and is always ready to note if one of his subordinates is wearing his gear inappropriately. Could even have sent soldiers to the brig for continued abuse of their outfits. Has some crosses and medals (he was wounded and the like, I don't exactly remember all the possible nazi medals) and wears them proudly.
3.Hates the Allied forces with great vigor, mainly because they bombed his beloved hotel to the ground and he knows his familys wealth is gone to ”dirty russian pigs (Russische schweine)” and ”English sons of whores”. But does not let his personal feelings get in the way of his work.
3)Violence is sometimes necessary to get the job done. There is a wild rumor going around that he once shot a man in the western front for abandoning his post. This rumor may or may not be started by him or be the truth for that matter, but it's the idea behind it that pleases Von Niemitz immensely. He does not enjoy violence, but neither does he abhor it. It is a necessary evil that should be harnessed for the best end results, in his mind. Considers it to be barbaric if used inappropriately.
4)He aspires to be the greatest leader of all time, like Alexander the Great, Caius Julius Ceasar and Hitler. Sees in himself the potential for great deeds. Not everyone does, though, so he's actually stuck in lower leadership because his superiors fear him. This jealousy could be used by the player, if their conversational choices allow for a non-violent way to end the conflict before it even actually starts.
He listens to German classical music and loves to hum these anthems by himself when he's on his usual inspection-tours. Wagner and the like.
Is a big fan of football and tells absolutely horrific jokes that nobody but himself usually gets. His subordinates have learned to at least chuckle a bit at his jokes, so as not to get on his bad side. Could be heard mumbling things like ”Verdammt, immer noch keine resultaten” at the radio room, waiting for football results. Of course the player would not know what these results are that the captain is so pressed to get, so there could be a ”quest” like ”Find out what are the results the good captain so badly desires”. The truth could be revealed by talking to the other friendly NPC's. I just now had an idea that if you include Fallout 3 -style questing (or any questing for that matter), the quest text could always be written like it was done in colloquial British English. You know, like ”tally-ho, pip-pip” style writing. At least I would find it funny if I was given a task like ”Find out what the devil is going on in this place” or ”Try to be a good chap and kill off all the nasty nazis in this section of the base”.
5)Aside from the things I already mentioned, he could have a monocle in his right breast pocket, ready to be used whenever he inspected something fine and detailed. Yet another sign of his supposed grandeur. He also carries a little black book, which he uses to note down any exceptionally good or any bad behaviors of his subordinates. This book he also uses as a diary of sorts, scribbling down numbers and dates etc. Could provide some interesting info for the player if he gets his hands on it.
Also, he doesn't usually drink unless it's for something special and smokes seldomly when he's annoyed or really vexed about something. Smokes Lucky Strikes whenever possible, is known to comment things like ”At least the damn yanks got one thing right”.
6)Carries with him at all times:
His trusty sidearm Walther P38 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walther_P38), which is basically the only gun he can operate very well due to his injured left shoulder. One clip of bullets in magazine, 2 clips on his belt. Doesn't waste ammo.
His monocle, black book with ballpoint pen, compass (to navigate around the base at times), key to his room, wrist-watch (black leather strap, classic roman-numeral display), his medals and outfit naturally, along with hat. Black standard issue officer leather boots.
There is also an old MP40 on his quarters wall, which he hasn't used after he got shot. But he keeps it in perfect condition. Spotless and ready to go whenever it may be required. Exceptionally good ironsights retrofitted on to it afterwards. It's the only remnant he carries with himself from the western front.
Also, in his drawer in his quarters is a classic glass serving set for a bottle of cognac. It's a bottle of Hennessy (2/3 already drunk away) and he reserves it for very special occasions. Doesn't usually let anyone know he has it, since it is a French drink. A sort of ”war reward” from his days in France.

Harald: Thanks for the correction, feel free to point out any other inaccuracies you run into here. :)

This specific rank we had already corrected in our design files (I've worked on a list/table of military hierarchy of all soldiers & officers in the game lately) but naturally we don't always realize to check everything, so mistakes slip past us now and then.

Thanks for the correction, Hauptsturmführer is indeed the one we meant to use.

And yes, his rank is supposed to be equivalent of a captain.

Harald Weber August 31, 2010 14:18 Flag

The rank you gave him is the equivalent of a Captain, and it's Hauptsturmführer, not Sturmhauptführer - that would be an SA rank.

An SS Colonel would be a Standartenführer.

Most excellent news, I'll forward it to my friend. Thank you.

Writing an NPC based on this shot just now, thought you'd want to know. :)

Carl: A very good point, thanks!

Markus Koskivirta January 19, 2010 21:59 Flag

Yeah, good point. We could change the compass to something else. Or better yet, just leave it out. Since he obviously would know the ins and outs of the base thoroughly.

Brilliant! Very detailed character.
But wether a compass is of use may be questionable.

Following excrept taken from http://antarctica.kulgun.net/FAQ/a.shtml
"Where will a compass point at the South Pole?
The Magnetic South Pole (the point on the earth that magnetic compasses point at) is NOT at the same location as the Geographic South Pole. Thus a magnetic compass at the South Pole will point north! But north to where? The position of the South Magnetic Pole in February 1998 was 64.59° S and 138.53° E. This is about the same longitude as Adelaide in South Australia. So a compass at the South Pole points towards the middle of Australia.

The closer you get to the Magnetic Pole the more vertical the earths field gets. At South Pole the field will be fairly vertical.

At Casey Station (Geographic location 66deg17minS 110deg32minE), just north of the Antarctic circle, in 1996 (when I maintained the geophysical observatory and took this measurement) the absolute direction of the earths magnetic field was Declination -92deg35.4min Inclination -81deg25.3min, which is almost directly east off the station, and 8.5 degress of vertical (for the record the field strength was 64526nT). At Casey a magnetic compass is not very useful as the horizontal field is very weak, and the needle wants to point down. There are also local magnetic anomalies to complicate matters."

According to wiki.answers.com
"The exact locations of the north and south magnetic pole move continually. The pole can move-hour-to-hour and day-to-day-by hundreds of meters."

More interesting nav-info: http://www.thepoles.com/expguide/navigationsp.htm

Then again, perhaps mere magnetic variations would not affect such a clear, scientific mind. Either way, the information above is probably good to know.

Very nice work Markus! We'll certainly have to use him, he sounds like a character that will contribute a lot to the gameplay experience of both combat-intensive and noncombatant character types. :)

Wow! Now that's a fleshed out character.. Should be very usable in the game. There are so many details maybe the team can use them for multiple characters.

Also, I forgot to mention that he knew people from the Hitler-Jugend times but didn't actually go himself. He worked with his mother a lot at the hotel.
