@Kris yeah I can't come up with anything either... You're right that a cowboy hat would be too much over the top. So maybe the star is just the best symbol!
We really got all our hands full at the moment, most of us even working during Christmas... So I guess I'll put up another logo design task once the holidays are over ^_^ Let's see what the other wreckers can come up with :D
I know a sheriff's badge is a cliche, I just can't think of anything which says "Western!" better that would work as a letter. :)
Maybe you could put a cowboy hat on one of the letters instead? Or would that look too childish?
Kris, you've got a very good point there... Having a snowflake in the word "snow" is kind of redundant! I once thought of replacing it with the traffic sign for "frost warning" to give a hint that Snowblind is also a road movie. The Sheriff's star is a good idea, but in my taste a little too "classic-western". We have a guy with the title of Sheriff in the film but he doesn't wear a star and isn't really too important. Still, it might be better to give a solid hint towards western than leaving people clueless ;-)
Carl - Thanks a ton for checking. I understand actors don't like having set photographers around for bathing shots.. A shame there isn't a more natural Naina shot, she deserves better. Maybe you can post your favorite HD shot and i can see what i can do about it.
I know about the comments!! It's crazy. I've been fine tuning these based on the responses. That's collaboration..
I checked through all the photos from set again but there are no other portraits of Naina :,-( of course there are some good shots of her in the film but the resolution is only HD :-((( Seens like the final poster will only show some motorbikes and no people ;-P BTW this shot has the most comments ever ;-)
Thanks for the comments, again. I've revised these posters many times over based on the feedback. Keep it coming!
- It's mos def not a chick flic. But I agree with Kris: it's unfair (and uncommercial) to have no female characters in closeup shots on the posters. I didn't want to make them as sex-driven as they turned out, but i only worked with the material that was available at the time, which included zero charismatic shots of women.
- The 'Western' look is a tough call. 'Western' or 'Western style' is a small difference these days.
I can't do the backgrounds in the regular wild west -style as the movie takes place in a snowy environment. And my backgroung photos from are barely visible anyways.
Logo with a sheriff's badge would be great, if it fits the design. I still support the 'western' theme being a mystery for the time being.
- Naina's poster is the weakest of them all. Are there no set photo better of her? And to answer Julie again, there was an intent to have Clayton Young's face made out of steam on the background, but I think i'll skip that in the future Naina poster.
Kalle, what about replacing the snowflake in the logo with a frozen sheriff's badge?
I made the same observation with the posters. I think generally, Snowblind is more a "guys" movie - at least the trailer views on YouTube are viewed by a mainly male audience. Well maybe women just don't log in so their data can't be analysed ; )
I think that people don't make a connection between motorbikes, cowboys and katanas isn't necessarily a bad thing. The point of a poster is to generate interest, and if the people are puzzled... all the better! I'm pretty convinced when people watch the film, they'll take this stuff pretty much "as is" due to the overall presentation ^_^
""Many have trouble connecting the look of the characters, motorcycles, katana and modern guns with the 'western' -label... Maybe the tagline or something should mention this is a modernized western?"
What might be needed in the background of all these posters, or perhaps on the Snowblind logo, is something to indicate a western setting, some kind of landscape or something. The snow theme is there, but the western theme is missing.
I wouldn't just put it in the tagline, I'd include something visual like a sheriff's badge or whatever...
"Some women, they just wanna watch Jane Austen in French black and white serial costume dramas..."
...well this film wouldn't be aimed at those women! :)
One thing I would point out though is that the current women's posters focus on their bodies while the current men's posters focus on their faces. Maybe there should be a bit more variety?
After a roundtable, here's some feedback from friends and others (this goes for the gentlemen posters, as well - http://www.wreckamovie.com/shots/show/3908):
- They're cool. Aroused some laughs, in the good way. Called newer Terminator and Die Hard-style, which was my intent. The ice and fire thingie (i call it contrast) was liked.
- Many have trouble connecting the look of the characters, motorcycles, katana and modern guns with the 'western' -label... Maybe the tagline or something should mention this is a modernized western?
- Clayton Young looking at the camera was off-putting, somehow. Saberneck had the best impression as far as charisma.
- Naina's photo looks too plastic and edited on the face. And i didn't touch it (or her) i swear!
- Especially the ladies posters's are wanted on the wall...by the guys. Somehow my female crowd is put off by the western action theme. Some women, they just wanna watch Jane Austen in French black and white serial costume dramas...
Do give your take!? Are my friends just mad, or have they got a point or two?
Hi Jani, don't worry I'm an absolute MS Comic Sans hater as well. I really could throw up whenever I see that font in public. If I were president of th EU, I would ban it except for use in Kindergarten maybe and of course the signs saying "Hello! My name is..." because I wouldn't want to have Fight Club banned from video stores ;-)
Just please god no Comic Sans;)
You mean charlotta's font? http://www.wreckamovie.com/shots/show/3081
It's pretty sweet! I like the grungy look. If you find another good western font, the 'grunge' can always be added later.
Emphasizing the western origin would be benefitial. Friends of mine have been asking how in the world a guy with a katana fits in a western. I tell 'em to STF and go watch Wild Wild West as a punishment for narrow-mindedness.
Hi Jani, yeah I know it isn't really up for that resolution - but these prints aren't so sharp anyway - you have to watch them from a little distance. Still I bet it's gonna look very impressive :D And as for the logo, we have to design a new logo anyway as the current one is only kind of a placeholder... Well it's gonna be hard because one has really gotten used to the old one. But we feel the Snowblind logo has to transport the western style better, so maybe it's gonna be something among the likes of that suggestion in the wallpaper task... Or just good old plain MS Playbill haha ;D
Julie - it's Clayton Young's eye. Actually his face is formed out of the steam as well.. I can try making it more prominent, but it's very hard to do so.
Kalle - cool!! But i wonder if it'll hold together in A1 size. I did the poster in A4 size at 300dpi.
There was no point in making it bigger, since the snowblind-logo was at such a low res. I'm afraid the logo will look a bit blurred, but otherwise it should be fine..
If i get a better version of the logo, i should be able to make a BIG ass version for ya.
BTW we're going to try doing an A1 print at a local copy shop... It's gonna be a rather affordable digital print but it's supposed to look quite good. So Jani we'll soon know how your work looks in 80x60cm stuck to a wall :D
Hey Jani,
I like your style although the poster of Naina looks a little odd with that eye in the background? Who's eye is it?
It's not really clear if there is a face in the background or what. I suggest you either make the face more prominent or leave it out.
Keep up the great work!
In that ice-aged future, they just have to ;P
Wow, a pregnant heroine. I can't think of any film with that except maybe Fargo (but that wasn't an action film). OTOH pregnant people probably shouldn't be flying through the air on motorbikes... :)
Great work Jani! And yes, Barbara is pregnant... She's the babe with tha baby. But I think the tagline is quite alright... But who knows, maybe we should put that up for discussion! Let's put up a task for this.... Hehhe :D
Bike chick's picture is now in glorious HD for your viewing pleasure.
Printable in A4 size in full 300dpi resolution. I'm considering plastering it all over my walls, ceiling too.
Hey, wait a minute!! ..... Is she pregnant!? Or what is that thing on her belly?! I didn't even notice it in the lo-res version! OMFG! This creates all kinds of tagline possibilities... "Born To Ride, Baby Inside" or "These Two Babies Will Give You The Ride of Your Life"....
Kalle, if you have any other ones is better resolution, send 'em in my general direction.
Kalle - I sent my email address to your WAM mail. Just send me all the good stuff ya got!
Yes I have the photo now in full-res. Jani do you want to give me an eMail adress where I can send it? Or should I post it here? I'd have to do a new shot for this though...
Hope you get a better resolution picture of Jana. Really liked the idea, but biker girls should be sharp :)
Hi Jani, right the pictures of Barbara are really low-res in the versions I have... strange. I'll ask the photographer about the original, especially that "hasta la vista" bike shot ;D
Kalle, would you happen to have a higher resolution version of the Barbara photo (and maybe also the others)?
I designed all the posters to be printable in at least A4 size at 300dpi, but that Barbara photo is just way too blurry and pixelated even for a normal screen. It's a shame, since i think i managed to get some "Terminator 2" -feel to the poster...
Jani you should also post that Barbara picture on the facebook page of Jana Pallaske, the actress playing her. I think she'll love it! And while you're there, you can become her fan... she definitely deserves being admired :D

Really great! Your new techniches pay off already :-D Maybe the guys should put some of these in the film !!
Nice! I like the way you've done the colours on the middle poster.
