Is there a mistake?

Was there really 3000 people who made StarWreck?

That figure does sound exaggerative, indeed, considering the number of registered members at the forums.

Total members 1707 (today)

Even many of those have been just spam bots or joined much later. Of course, not everyone involved has registered either.

I myself don't care which number the team is rolling out, but rather using even such a more moderate figure would sound more truthful.

There were 300 people in the film's end credits. Those are the ones who concretely contributed (made models, acted, built props, lent equipment, donated funds, arranged on-location filming etc.) to getting the film finished.

John is talking about the whole star wreck community in IRC and in our message board which gave in addition to concrete contributions also ideas, tips, comments, moral support etc. The total amount of people in that community is about 3000 people.
