Comments vs Shots

Hi Guys,

I think it's a little impractical that comments seem to be treated much less "valuable" than shots. If you have a general discussion going, a comment could have even more informational/intellectual "value" than the initial shot. Also, it can happen quite easily that you don't even read a new comment as there seem to be no notifications for those!

So in my opinion, comments should be treated with the same attention as shots - meaning, new comments should show up on your dashboard and should also appear on the home page in the "latest activity" box.

Cheers,
Kalle-Max :-)

Yowza. Impressive.

Crunchy databases?

Dang, this makes me wish I'd gotten into computers when I was just outta high school.

The problem was notifying shot authors about their own comments. That is fixed now and Dashboard is showing correct number for new comments count.

I hope this is my last comment on this issue : ).

@Jenny Stavaeus, I wasn't really working. Just popped by to see what people had been doing during the May Day weekend.

Jenny Stavaeus May 03, 2009 21:55 Flag

I didn't get a notification on my dashboard about the comment that I just made, so maybe the fix is now working.

Jenny Stavaeus May 03, 2009 21:53 Flag

Goodness me, are you working this late on a Sunday evening? You sure are diligent about your work, but this little bug is a minor thing so don't fret too much about it.

Vesa Nieminen May 03, 2009 20:48 Flag

There is definitely something weird going on. Atleast the comment counts are off. I'm tracking it down tomorrow.

Jenny Stavaeus May 03, 2009 16:25 Flag

I don't think that fix is working, I just got notified about one of my own comments that I made two minutes ago.

Kalle Max Hofmann May 03, 2009 14:55 Flag

Cool thanks a lot - again :D

@Kalle Max Hofmann, it's not nagging when there really is a problem. I noticed it also and fix is now in place. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Kalle Max Hofmann May 01, 2009 22:20 Flag

Err... sorry I have to keep on nagging but... Now you even get a notification on comments you posted YOURSELF? Now that's a bit strange/confusing...?

I mean it's better than it was before but maybe you guys could smoothen that out?

Thanks;
K-M

Yeah thanks, this is just great!
:D

Cool it works :)

Dashboard notifications about new comments on commented shots are now online! http://www.wreckamovie.com/productions/wreck-a-movie-platform/news/109

Thanks for looking into this :-)
BTW I also noticed another thing about the comments that is a little impractical and could probably changed easily: When a new shot is posted, its name is active as a link on the "latest news" home page. So you can just click on it and jump to the shot. But when a comment is posted, the shot title is visible but not active as a link. So you need more clicks to get there.

Cheers,
Kalle-Max :-)

Hmmm, it seems that remember incorrectly and the tasks updated value is indeed updated. I remember it wasn't always so. I have to investigate

@Kalle Max Hofmann, have you had situations when updated value was not updated when you commented?

Vesa Nieminen April 18, 2009 18:38 Flag

Many things to comment in this discussion. :)

When comment is added, the commented shot will raise to the top of the shot list. But task's updated value is not changed. I think that should be changed but I have to talk with the team first.

Currently Dashboard shows comments to the task's author. I also think that showing all comments would be overkill. But noticing people who have participated in the shot's comments sounds like a good idea.

Jenny Stavaeus April 17, 2009 22:49 Flag

Don't they? Whenever a comment is added that shot seems to rise to the top of shots, as the default setting is "Last updated", which is what I think you're asking about. Yes, we don't get notified on the dashboard, but any comment added moves that shot up to the top. Maybe this doesn't work the same for all browsers? But they do show up on the front page.

Kalle Max Hofmann April 17, 2009 14:53 Flag

I have also noticed now that comments don't add to the "updated" status of a task. This is definitely wrong and could even be regarded as a bug!

Or, as my first impression was, you guys really thought comments wouldn't be significant at all... but they are, and very much so!

Cheers,
Kalle-Max :D

Oskar Lönnberg April 16, 2009 19:54 Flag

It would be convenient if you could tag some shot or task to be followed. From these shots you would get all comments also to your MYWRECK page. Or if you have commented some shot you would automatically get the comments from others also to the MYWRECK page.

Automatically getting everything to the dashboard could probably be an overkill. Anyway I have been missing also this kind of feature.

Kalle Max Hofmann April 16, 2009 16:25 Flag

BTW, wouldn't it be more logical if the comments would appear under a shot in the order "oldest to newest"? As it is now, the latest ones appear right under the original shot. So if you're new to the topic and want to follow the course of the discussion, it's quite strange to read as you have to start from the bottom working your way up...

Cheers,
Kalle-Max :-)

Kalle Max Hofmann April 15, 2009 15:46 Flag

Oh I just saw they actually DO show up on the home page... I must have missed that. But they could be shown in "My Shots", especially as some people give much more comments than shots.

Cheers,
Kalle-Max ^_^
