That sounds pretty simple. I just migrated from a PC to Mac, so i'll have to re-figure out some 3d stuff, but if you want i will try animating a simple demo scene for you and then we can see from there.

Todd:
Congratulations on your son being born! Don't have any of my own, but every new life is to be celebrated!
As for the test clip, I'm thinking the ship should be maybe no more than about 25-35 feet long. I'm thinking along the lines of the Orion spacecraft from 2001 but have it look more like it was intended for deep space travel rather than earth to the moon. http://tinyurl.com/2001ASO

Hey! Sorry i haven't gotten back to you on this yet! My son was just born so that kind of took up my time. I will get you the test video soon, but what tech level would this be? like sci-fi type, star trek/wars-ish or more realistic/NASA-ish?

Have you thought about matte paintings? You could film your actor in a place with bare ground, like maybe a gravel parking lot or dirt road, and then add a matte painting around him to make it look like the the entire shot is a barren wasteland. As long as the actor fits within the sandy/rocky area you wouldn't even need a green screen.

As far as talented environment painters, i don't know any personally, but maybe if you surf around Deviant Art or Indy Mogul for awhile you could find someone. There are always guys there that would love to do real work but haven't gotten the chance yet.
But then again it would be easier to just photoshop some yourself, maybe stitch together some stock photos of deserts/wastelands, or use Terragen to render some.
(Or, depending on my free time, i wouldn't mind trying to make some for you once you get your shots. I haven't done it yet but i wouldn't mind trying my hand at it.)

Goodness, I hadn't thought of that. I'm usually the person in film school bleating on about the merits of matte paintings and here I never considered it! Thanks for that, Todd. Know any good matte painters?

Todd, I'm so sorry for not getting back to you sooner! Yes, I'd love a demo scene. I'd say something like a ship, maybe a transport type, coming in from right of screen, turning toward the camera and then traveling toward the screen.
Is this OK? Please don't break any bones or organs doing this and please don't think I'm in a rush. Please take your time and let me know if there's anything I can help you with.

Thanks for that idea, Peter. I'll think about it, for sure.

Hi Phillip,
It's true that nobody works for nothing, however you can give them something that is quite valuable.
Credit. Actors, especially student actors will work for a film credit. Film crew will also work for film credits.
As long as you feed them and keep them interested in the project things will be fine.

Mars bars are okay, just as long as you don't crack out the guarana bars. The caffine would make the actors agressive.

You might also want to look at making it into a motion poster like the one for Iron Sky. Quite a few productions on here are working on their own motion posters, could become a cool new format if we get enough of them going!
