Helsinki, Love/Hate > Concepts for different episodes > Internet Love

One of Finland's defining characteristics in recent times is its heavy involvement in the IT industry. This could be a theme in a film about Helsinki in the 2000s. A lot of relationships nowadays begin among people who met on the internet, so perhaps two characters in Helsinki could meet while using a social network or playing an online game. Maybe this is a cliche but one possible source of drama might be one or both characters lying about their age/sex/appearance/marital status, and the lie would have to be dealt with once they meet in real life.

"One could be that they miraculously stumble to the missing father and he turns out to be all the things the boy and the teacher imagined." I would avoid that, it's too... Hollywood. :) Perhaps you could end the story with the boy realising and/or admitting that he was projecting his wishes about his father onto the imaginary man. That would be a big thing to realise. If it is handled correctly, simply realising something about yourself can be a very satisfying emotional climax in a story.

Wow, got to say, I just love this idea of combining Kris's ideas. Racial prejudices and stereotypes have grown to become an extremely important question in Finland, so lying about such things in internet would cause efficient drama. And, in my opinion, this is not a cliche at all!

This task is for generating ideas for different episodes of the film, i.e. what are the themes of each love story. You can also elaborate and describe in some detail the idea you have, although we might not use it as such. Here are some ideas to start working with: * young love * elderly love * love with age difference * unrequited love * fantasy love * homo-/bisexual love * love between human and animals (in a strictly non-sexual way, i.e. dog and its owner) * love between two animals! Anyway, go crazy folks! As long as it all can happen in Helsinki.

As we all know, cities tend to evolve endlessly, growing larger and higher. Buildings and shops disappear, new ones arise. Surrounding fields are slowly filled with blocks of flats. The question is: What about the people? Do they evolve?

One possible point of view for an episode could be that of an old person, who has spent his whole life in Helsinki. Seeing the change in his home town gives him a unique perspective on the city's culture and environment. Does he still enjoy his home town? Or is his heart filled with nostalgia and love for the old surroundings that no longer exist?

You have also an idea for Multiethnic Love Story, maybe these two ideas could be integrated? For example, two-three young boys accidentally go to Internet dating site and decide to answer to one of post there as a joke. The post they select is from older woman from Thailand. Boys invent a fake identity and use a picture of one of the boys father. Since 50% of the marriages in Finland end in divorce, chances are that at least one of the boys is coming from single parent home, normally living without a father. Maybe, this absent father and his picture would be rather obvious choice for grounding the fake personality. The lady, maybe a primary school teacher, likes the post from this invented male and answers back. One of the boys, the one without a father, starts dialog over the Internet and, finally, the lady decides to come to visit Finland in her holiday to meet with this interesting man. She is a very independent and strong minded lady and decides to surprise the man of her dreams. She does not tell in advance that she is coming. She decides to inform the man only after she arrives to Finland. Meanwhile, the boy has projected a lot of his believes and wishes about his missing fathers personality to the correspondence with the teacher. He has also begun to be involved trough his imaginary father and decides to meet the teacher and explain the situation. They meet, and the teacher eventually understands the situation, and they become friends. There are several option how the story could evolve from this point. One could be that they miraculously stumble to the missing father and he turns out to be all the things the boy and the teacher imagined. Maybe at the end, at least, the boy is reconnected with his father and the teacher ends up having nice holiday weekend in Finland.

Helsinki, Love/Hate > Concepts for different episodes > Birds in love
by: Anna Pekuri

Well this idea is quite comical however just came to mind after reading the last idea (two animals in love) How about a love story of a seagull and a pigeon :D they are two most hated birds in Helsinki, but there are a lot of them there. So I was thinking something along lines of how they view the city (cause they sure seem to like Helsinki, well the center part at least) etc, and why two different birds, well with that it would be possible to portrait diversity or unlikeliness or something along those lines... Execution might be slightly tricky tough... but still, it could be quite funny/tragic etc. Also with the birds perspective it could show a different side of Helsinki than what we are used to see.

Tianyi: we could start as a normal film lets say e.g. at kauppatori and focusing on the birds and at that point it gradually switches to anime and at the end it swiches back to normal movie. It could be e.g. an imagination of a person and when starting to imagine he/she turns into the bird (the anime bit) and when back to "reality" back to real life (or something). Also basically same idea except no imagining anything and just focusing from bird to anime and at the end to reality or something.

Sorry, I should add something to (4) and (5): During the child's reading of the story she gets to the part of the book where the birds fly over Helsinki. At this point we would just hear her voice, but the pictures would be genuine film of birds in Helsinki and (if possible) footage of flying over Helsinki (maybe using some stock footage?).

It would be a real challenge to realise, but also an interesting story. Here's one way of doing it on the cheap, just off the top of my head: 1. We see a child at home reading a picture book. Her parents are arguing in the background out of focus, we don't know what about but we know they're arguing and shouting at each other. She is upset and turns to the picture book for comfort. 2. From behind the child's shoulder we see the first few pages. It is a picture book about two birds falling in love. It would be drawn in a traditional old-fashioned style, as seen in Aapinen or similar books. 3. The row in the background is getting even worse, the two parents are screaming at each other now. It's not violent, but it is loud and frightening her. The child decides she has to get out of the way and escapes to her bedroom upstairs. She tries to crudely barricade the door shut behind her with toys and chairs. 4. Now that she feels safe in her bedroom, she takes out her book and starts looking at it again. This time she reads the book's text aloud. 5. The child is now smiling, and decides to re-enact the book's story with a couple of soft toy birds. At one point she carries the birds around the room as if they're flying together, with the camera following her. This is a moment of joy. 6. The child reads the end of the story, then closes the book. The sounds of the row are heard faintly in the background. The child gets into bed with the toy birds beside her.

Anna, what a wonderful idea! Execution might be a problem, if you think it as a traditional film. But we could make this episode an animated sequence, so anything can happen. Sounds great :)

Helsinki, Love/Hate > Concepts for different episodes > City vs. the country side
by: Riku Pyhälä

Ok, this is actually a very common issue in Finnish cities, and particularly in the capital. We have a boy, 22, who has just moved to the centre of Helsinki from a small town in the country side. He is now living his youth, meeting new people, having fun in the city. One night out he hooks up with a girl, 22, and they seem to make a connection instantly. The problem is, this girl has lived all her life in the busy city centre and is so tired of all the fuss that she wants to move away to the country side, to a smaller town. The boy is obviously baffled and doesn't know how to feel about this. Is he going to leave all his new pals and go back to the country side with her? Or is she going to give up on her plans and decide to stay in Helsinki? They both have a point to prove.

Alright, nice Kris that you blocked that character question from there. It's quite important. Without going too far into details, I'd also like to point out the underlying theme of all this, which is loneliness. As the girl suffers from loneliness in the city (people are rude and hurried, old friends have moved away), the boy's love of the city could be just about escaping from actual loneliness in the countryside. But to fit the story into 15 minutes, I think you better choose one protagonist, either girl or the boy... Just wanted to point out that thematic setting: the feelings of loneliness and love are somewhat opposite, thus they create drama. :)
