The Making of Martin Aggett > Interview with Jim Babb > Date / time
by: Jan-luc Vandamme

I accepted my fate at task leader for this one, but I just looked at the description now and saw the shoot is scheduled for next weekend. What day exactly? I'm working this weekend. I should talk with Jim about scheduling once I get the tech stuff & questions.

I wrote a message to Jeromy asking him to drop me an email directly as it seems like an easier way to converse but haven't heard back. He's coming to NYC and meeting with Jim and figured it would be a great time to do the interview?

Since Jim's project is being developed and launched during the timeframe we're documenting I think we should include their behind the scenes story in some way. This could be one of the main story threads in the film.

Jan Luc I just confirmed a trip to NYC starting on October 21st, and I will be there about a week. During this time, I will be able to spend a lot of time with Jim. If you book an interview with him earlier, I say go for it, and I'll obtain the footage from you then.

I spoke with Jim and we're gong to do the interview when he gets back from CO. Mid October, hopefully! Get additional questions / instruction to me by then. Thanks. I'll post another comment here when I schedule the shoot.

Thanks guys. The sho0t did not happen this weekend as I was working. I have a job coming up (I work art department on commercials) that goes until Oct. 12 so it may be tough to squeeze it in on my day off. Let me know the deadline for getting you the footage. Is mid-late October too late? Thanks for Jim's contact info. I'm going to talk more with him tonight at the Transmedia Meetup Group in NYC and keep you posted. Your directions are understood and the questions are superb. I'm sure Jim will have some ideas as well ; ). Not laughing at his jokes will be hard but I'll manage. P2 cards are easy to borrow/rent. I have a lil drive I can dump footage onto and mail. Send me an email for address details: janlucvd@yahoo.com. I look forward to contributing to this project.

The Making of Martin Aggett | The Making of an Update
We’ve got several exciting things to announce on the progress of our documentary. The biggest news is that Jeromy Barber from 12th Street House has agreed to join the project as our director! We’ve already had several creative meetings with Jeromy and have crafted a rough vision for the film. We’re lucky to have such a talented and creative artist leading this production! Part of that rough vision includes spotlighting three independent Alternate Reality Games from three different producers. Obviously, the Remix Fiction game will be one of the three, but there are so many people doing amazing and innovative things in this creative space we wanted to use the film to showcase some of that talent. To that end, we’re proud to announce that Jim Babb’s Socks Inc. and Pistolsniffer Industries‘ (formerly known as Funnel Productions) as yet unreleased ARG will be prominently featured in the documentary. That’s it for now. We will write periodic updates and post them right here so you can track our progress. As always, if you are interested in following the behind the scenes progress of the film we encourage you to visit Wreck-a-Movie where you can contribute your opinions and creative talents to the project.

Also. Set up the interview in a traditional manner. Keep the camera static (on a tripod preferably), and keep the shot head and shoulders with Jim framed to the right and looking at you off camera to the left so you can monitor the image on the camera LCD. If you have a separate monitor, do the opposite. Put Jim on the Left and you on the right. If you aren't bringing lights, find a sunny spot indoors with something interesting in the BG. Putting his puppet studio in the back fielded out would be nice. I've never been to his space, so I'm not sure what it looks like or what you're working with. This goes without saying, but prep Jim to include the questions in his answers. Don't interrupt him. Let him talk and let their be pregnant pauses when he's done. Don't laugh at his jokes for audio reasons....things like that.

Is it this weekend or the next? On the HVX, shoot it 1080i 24. The HVX doesn't shoot 1080p unfortunately. How many P2 cards do you have and what sizes, or do you shoot with a Firestore? Will you have a laptop nearby to dump footage, and we should probably send you a hard drive so shipment of the footage to us is painless. What kind of microphone do you have? Let me know the details because I have a bunch of folks there who can help out with this. I'm hoping the shoot is not this weekend because I'd like to do this Orlando shoot and get a much clearer idea of what questions we should be asking. Regardless, here are some general questions? 1. If you were explaining ARGs or transmedia to a novice, how would you do it? 2. Can you map out your learning curve and evolution of philosophy as it pertains to ARGs? 3. What is (are) your process(es) for preparing your games? 4. Do you know Martin Aggett? If so, what do you know about him? How has the ARG community responded to him? 5. Do you know Steve Diddle? What do you know about him? How has the ARG community responded to him? 6. Contrast and Compare Socks Inc with Must Love Robots. 7. How do you feel the ARG community has responded to you? 8. Describe the community that follows/plays ARGs? 9. Where are ARG and transmedia experiences heading? 10. Who are your mentors? Why? Any specific stories about these folks you'd like to share? 11. You did a stint with Jane McGonigal. Can you tell me about your experience and what you learned?
