The Beanstalkers > Lighting on the cheap > Work Lamps a la Fight Club?
by: Eric Tasker

The basement fight scenes in Fincher's Fight Club were lit entirely with hardware store work lamps.

Yeah, I know Martin has advocated using them himself, so this is definitely a possibility.

The Beanstalkers > A giant ring. > Plastic
Rather then a goose that lays golden eggs the characters steal a gold ring from the giants. What would be the best way to realise this? I'm thinking of simply upscaling a ring when the actors don't need to interact with it but there is a scene with one of them stealing it, so how can we mock up a tire sized ring without spending too much money? or could we use something like a hola hoop and replace it with a CG ring? (can you still get hola hoops?) thoughts?

You could plastiform your prop.

We've got a couple of interior scenes, does anyone have good advice for stylish lighting set ups without using massively powerful lights?

The Beanstalkers > A giant ring. > Prop
by: Michael Hudson

OK, I did some calculations and the results probably aren't as massive as you might expect. So, I think it's worth considering a prop of some sort. If the giant is 20m, and average UK female height is 1.6m This gives a ratio of 1:12.5 Taking an average ring size of say "Q", this is 18.5mm inside diameter. Using the above ratio, the "giant" ring would have an inside diameter of 23.1cm. Taking a standard wedding band and it would be about 3cm thick. 23cm is not as big as expected, I bet there's some sort of pipe this size which could be painted gold. The only effect would be making it look heavy when moving it and sound fx.

Thanks for the maths Michael, this is a good guide for everyone on the task. As you imply, 23 cm with 3cm thickness is nothing, you could make the ring out of almost anything.

The Pipe could be filled with something heavy like sand or so...

The Beanstalkers | Announcing: The Beanstalkers
http://thebiscuit.org/BStempPoster.jpg Recently I’ve been working on a new project which I’m now ready to announce as “The Beanstalkers” It will be about 10 – 15 minutes long and follows the adventures of two flat mates who loose their jobs and end up selling their car for a can of green beans. We’re looking to be shooting in the next month or so as the script is nearly locked and the lead roles now cast. Last week I produced a couple of proof of concept shots to give an impression of how the final effects will look and show the style that we are going for. These can be seen along with a brief introduction in the video below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpR0vWXbwGM If your interested in the project then feel free to help out on wreckamovie and/or join the facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Beanstalkers/112537578768522? Many Thanks to Angela and Kris for their support as this started to take shape and over course the ever willing to listen Mr Hudson.
