T-2099 > Plot Building 1 > Energy in Crisis? by: Carl Voluntaryist
Instead over oil, this could be a war over new emerging reactors.
Wether or not the oil has depleted (mineral vs. fossil debate) the nations soon realized that it could not supply the needed energy, and switched to nuclear power.
Instead of oil-magnates there are now uranium-magnates, and they are happily 'censoring' away competing technologies.
Enter the new threat:
A small 'rogue' nation, corporation, or individual has developed a new nuclear fuel, that runs cleaner, and is also more abundant than uranium (to the point that miners consider it a waste-product).
Not only cleaner, but you can re-use existing reactors, and it will catalyze the remaining uranium and its' waste to form less-lethal isotopes.
(easier & better?! -kill them!)
The new technology is actually old technology, long-suppressed, resurfacing.

Thorium
Now, I'm no nucular-technician, but this could make a decent plot-device for a sci-fi movie. Even if there are some technical-fallacies involved.
Our team starts out with orders to stop this nation or whatever (they're evil & must be stopped!), but finds out the real reason...
...and either joins them, or whatever...
There could be stylistic differences between the warring factions.
Old-technology (Uranium) requires more shielding, making the mechs larger & heavier, and you could have a cloupe of black-smoking diesel-engines added for effect.
The aircraft would be standard turbine jets running on JP (also diesel).
Colours: Brown, OD-Green, Soot, Rust, darker stuff...
New-Technology could then be lighter, smaller, and more agile.
Aircraft would be experimental, but run on the smaller reactors, making them also smaller, with a larger payload.
Maybe an electric/diesel hybrid with the jet-fuel for greater speeds.
Colors: lighter versions of old-scheme, gray, silver, clean-finish (not to say sparkling)...
The team's robot could be en example of new-tech, that they 'acquired' or that joined up during their campaign.

By 2099, Nuclear Fusion will be used to power day to day things, as fossil fuels will have been depleted. I imagine world eight years from now to be a dirty place, smoggy, compact. There will no such things as the 'Countryside'. Individuality will be something which will not be supported, Androids will roam the streets doing medial tasks for us Humans. Designer babies will not something to be frowned, Mankind will have colonized the moon and Mars, so will there fore have terraforming technology of some sort. All industrial factories will be ran and maintained by Robots, the same with cars and other transport, E.g. Trains. Most likely we will have messed up the surface of our dear planet, so those that can afford too will be leaving below the waves or above the atmosphere leaving the surface to be invaded by factories to fuel our economic growth and population booms. So maybe, you could write about a guy, a Surfacer, who is found dead in-front of an entrance to a below the wave city, were he finds the company he works for and discovers a terrible piece of technology that could threaten the whole human race? Hope this helped.

Fusion you say?
Then the dangerous new technology could also be a fusion-based suppressed old technology:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y356PNQw-mM
Cold Fusion
The world 'elites' have managed to sell us their hot nuclear-fusion reactors, with a complex infrastructure required to refine water, and rare-earth minerals, build complex plasma-containers out of super-cooled magnetic coils -and even more complicated sensors ...when all you really need is ocean water & sufficiently pure palladium.
After all: why teach a man to fish, when you can make him earn money through hard labor so he can eat fish in fancy restaurants -that have to be built by cheap labor, and supplied by trawlers fueled with crude oil -that needs to be extracted from the ground, refined in factories, etc... ?
T-2099 > Plot Building 1 > Ideas Need to assess the time period in 2099....What types of technology can be found then?...What types of industrial advancements have we made?

T-2099 > Character Designs needed > Is the appearence of the robot already locked? by: Angela R.
...and in this case, could we get to see it?
I just was thinking that the looks of the team uniforms should be somehow coherent... so knowing the appearence of anything you may already have locked would serve as ispirational material!

Hi Angela,
Somehow I missed this message....sorry.
I have been re-working the mecha and its purpose. It will be a combination of humanoid and flying vehicle.
T-2099 > Character Designs needed > How about the characters' personalities? by: Angela R.
Another thing which may be useful, would be knowing some more background information about the characters (physical attributes such as hair/complexion colors as well as a short biography describing their general attitude to life, likes/dislikes, etc.)
Or would you like the people here to think about them for you, brainstorming about the characters in general? 8)

The previous comment was my suggestion, but we can always re-roll them.
(I found this nifty dice generator here: http://www.silviotorre.it/random_generators/dice.aspx )
Or we can use the existing numbers, and re-assign all the values.
GEN Benny Anderson:
70 Points
---
LTC Merca Mills:
63 Points
---
MAJ Charles Strong:
77 Points
---
CPT George Maximillian:
64 Points

LT Ja'Net Jones:
59 Points

NOTE: These numbers are based on random dice throws (10x 1d10) and assigned according to my personal experience with officers.
I don't know how each member fits into the story, so I had to extrapolate...
Also, 'Scarred' doesn't mean ugly, but below average due to some old battle-wound or something...

I never played the game, to be completely honest, but I am familiar with it because a friend who has been writing a story taking place in its universe sent me lots of info so that I would be able to understand what he was rambling on and on about!
(As to playing RPGs - I've wanted to since I was a teenager, but never got a chance because the boys at school wouldn't accept a girl in their group. So I have mostly just read manuals and rolled characters without using them. But if pbem sim games also count, then yes, I am a gamer-girl and experienced GM.)

Cool, I didn't think you'd actually know it.
I've had this game for over 2 years, and never found any time to try it, but the mechanics are simple enough.
Now I just have to find my dice-bag...
(seriously: you play RPG's? I can count the gamer-girls I know on one hand...)
:-)

Funny you'd mention it, as I also immediately thought of the Mekton Empire when reading that T-2099 would deal with mecha technology... 8)
If you roll up some random characters, perhaps we could brainstorm about their skills (adjusting them if necessary) and then come up with some sketches?
