Very true, Kris. As a graphic designer I'm immersed in the Mac world. I guess I assumed that a larger percentage of Wreckers would be Mac users too. But I'm just not qualified to post a PC version of these instructions.

John, I suppose it might help if you give instructions for people who aren't using OS X, as only a small portion of the population do. :/

Once I had all the instructions typed up, and saw how complicated this task looked, I realized it was probably a pipe dream to think anyone would jump on it. But no harm in posting, right? Of course I can do it myself, it'll just take time. Thanks for the hug though! :)

Welcome to the real world... you should always have the backup plan to do it yourself.

I've started an ASSETS LIBRARY at a free file-hosting site: http://tinyurl.com/3yb4eno These assets will be VIDEO CLIPS and STILL IMAGES extracted from DVDs of the Star Trek animated series DVDs. These files will be the building blocks for the storyboards, the animatic, and the final animated film we are making. Anyone with some experience ripping video from DVDs and editing/exporting video files can help out. What follows is a description of the workflow I'm using, and links to some free software that can help: **HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ST:JAN ASSETS LIBRARY** 1. GET YOUR HANDS ON THE DVDs of *Star Trek: The Animated Series.* If you live in the USA, you can rent them on NetFlix. You may be able to rent them elsewhere as well. Another possibility is finding the box set on eBay. Not too expensive, and you could always sell it or give it as a gift to your favorite Trekkie. 2. Use *MacTheRipper* to EXTRACT VOB FILES from an episode of the show: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14414/mactheripper If you are using a PC, there is probably similar software available that extracts the VOB files from DVDs. (Links anyone?) 3. POST A MESSAGE here to let the group know what episode you are working on. We have to communicate so we don't duplicate each other's efforts. I am working on Disk 1, Episode 1 currently. 4. VOB files can't be edited directly. CONVERT YOUR VOB file TO A QUICKTIME MOVIE FILE with *MPEG Streamclip* (available in a Mac or Windows version here: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html ) Make sure you have some space available on your hard drive: once converted, each episode will be about 10 GB. 5. SLICE UP YOUR EPISODE INTO INDIVIDUAL SHOTS. I do that by opening the Quicktime file in Final Cut Pro. Then I set the IN and OUT points and use "Export Using Quicktime Conversion." Export a .mov file at full size (640 x 480 pixels) at the highest quality setting, using H.264 compression. Save the audio as a mono track. 6. NAME THE FILE: it's VERY important (!) we all use the same naming protocol for files: Here's the file naming protocol: **Sulu_CU_Bridge_SeatedLooksUp_1-1.mov** 1 2 3 4 5 1. Person/persons or object featured 2. Camera Angle: CU, MS, WS, etc 3. Location 4. action or any additional description 5. DVD disk # and episode # the shot comes from 7. EXPORT A STILL FRAME from your clip. Save a PICT file and a high-quality JPEG. Use the exact same name as you did for the .mov clip, but using the .pct and .jpg suffix. *(Why do this? The PICT file is for people who might edit the image in Photoshop, to create a new background plate for instance. The JPEG serves as a viewable thumbnail of the same-named video file. Without it, the only way to see what a video clip looked like would be to download and play it.)* 8. UPLOAD your files to the assets library! If you'd like to help on this task, send me a message and I'll send you the log-in information so you can upload files. **THANK YOU WRECKERS!**

Star Trek: Just Ad Nauseum > Research & establish an online assets library > Wreckamovie will be offering this
by: Peter Vesterbacka

We will offer unlimited storage here on Wreckamovie pretty soon (wanted to do this already for months, but have fallen a little behind in or development schedule). So to answer your questions: **1. be free of charge to use** Yes. Will be free of charge. **2. allow uploading of large files and storage of a lot of data** Yes. We will offer unlimited storage and unlimited file size. **3. have a good interface that allows us to organize assets into folders and rename files and folders as needed.** Qualified yes as different people have different opinions on what is good user interface;-) Our plan is to have a "media tab" for every production and every wrecker here on Wreckamovie. Under this media tab you should then be able to have an unlimited number of folders with an unlimited number of items/files. We are reasonably far in the development, so you should expect to see this within a month. Will share some of our plans in the form of screenshot mockups as soon as I can. All feedback and ideas on what we should do is much appreciated as always. Here's a mockup of the Press Kit that we are working on that will make use of the media from productions & wreckers. http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv46/petervesterbacka/WAM_press_tab.jpg

John, that's great input! Will talk with the guys and make sure we include your suggestions. We are a bit behind schedule, but shouldn't be long now.

And another thing: batch uploading & downloading. You shouldn't have to select and and upload files one at a time.

Elaborating on file hosting features: Files should display in alphabetical order! I started an assets library over at my Groupsite.com project page, and the files stack in the order you've uploaded them. And there's no way to re-order them! I expect to have several hundred files eventually and with no way to sort them it will be almost impossible to find what you need. Alpha should be the default. (Even better if you could also choose to view by file type, creation date, etc.) So... Peter... how's that new file hosting feature coming? :D
