Production Update #5 - HERE WE GO!!!

Posted April 25, 2012 by Kalle Max Hofmann 1 Thumb-up

Alright guys, time to step it up a couple notches - we found a company who are very interested to bring SS3D into stores - at least in Germany! Of course it's not guaranteed that it will make any money - but if it does, we get a 50% share and I think the fact alone that we don't have to take any risk ourselves is pretty sweet!

So the only thing that stands between us and getting a 3D-Blu-ray of Solar System 3D into our sweaty hands is a shitload of work! There is one SLIGHT catch to that whole deal, to make it work we have to deliver the finished product by the end of June! This isn't as bad as it sounds, because we're already very well prepared and have started the actual production. The video material for the first (of four) episodes is basically finished which means we are right on track, according to our time table.

The only problem is, there are some areas where we can't do too much ourselves, and this is everything that involves CG modelling. We still need a space station exterior, a space station interior and - this is new - a sea monster! Aside from that, there is still music to compose and some photoshopping to be done.

So if you can help us with any of these tasks, wreck away! And even if not, you're of course invited to check out all new still shots from the show and comment on them! Every comment helps =)

ps: while we can't guarantee any monetary payments to our participants, at least it's definite that rather sooner than later, you'll hold the 3D-Blu-ray containing your work in your hands, and of course everyone will be properly credited and these credits will also appear on IMDb :D

Hola,

I can help you from the music end. Let me know what tracks you want, and I will set up an upload for you to use (just add attribution). Best of luck!

(Guessing you want spacy music, so Enigma, Origins, Metamorph, Valley of the Shadow might be good, see below)

Hehhe yeah that's a tight timing but it's great if you can manage to render all that stuff - cause Nomad is gonna be fantastic in SS3D :D

BTW since you're doing the stuff in Blender, wouldn't renderfarm.fi be an option? In that case you could send off some more renderings as you leave for the mine, and I could collect'em up once they are done... Or isnt that the way it works?

Samuli Jomppanen April 28, 2012 09:09 Flag

Awesome that this thing is getting forward. Now that i am almost cured of that influenza thingy... I'll get on fixing the Nomad stuff you reqqed for. Unfortunetly due to iminent start of Mining season i wont be able to do much beyond that until next autumn.

I however hope i can get all the things you asked for done before 25.5 (scheduled day of my departure to the mine)

Production Update #4

Posted March 28, 2012 by Kalle Max Hofmann 1 Thumb-up

Here we go again, one day late as I have some stupid cold atm. But feeling better already ^_^

In the meantime, we put together a first demo clip in stereo, using almost original NASA images for starters. Undortunately, I can't seem to get YouTube to accept the file in its current configuration, even though it plays nicely on my 3D-TV.

So here's just a still for now. Provided you have a 3D display, you can view it in side-by-side mode =)

Interestingly the warping method we're using to create the deep-textured 3d effect for the nebulas hasn't been working with camera rotation before, but I fixed that by writing some expressions. It's always a nice surprise to find out the time you spent in math class at school wasn't entirely wasted :P

Oh yes and most people absolutely dislike the old-school overlay we put on top. Seem that has to be replaced with something more hi-teccy-looking ^_^

On another front, Samuli J has been rendering some first Nomad animations to use in the first full SS3D promo teaser that we're currently working on. These renderings look pretty good so far, hopefully we'll be able to show some things in motion in the next update :D

Keep spacin' out,
Kalle Max

Production Update #3

Posted February 27, 2012 by Kalle Max Hofmann 3 Thumb-ups

Time for our monthly update, you spaceheads out there!

Recently there has been a lot of activity in this production which has propelled us to the #1 slot of the "most active production" - thanks for the high quality participation, people!

There has been a lot of discussion about views of Triton, artificial gravity and of course Jonv's designs for the space station.

On our side, production of the first stereo 3D scenes has begun. Space is going to look deep, but it's kind of too early yet to show something. After all, we want it to look really spectacular :D

An interesting addition to the project is the idea of introducing the exploration rover "NOMAD" from wreckamovie production "TO MARS".

It will surely help the narrative structure and distincitiveness of our show to have shots of NOMAD on the different extraterrestial bodies we're visiting. There could be different models of the rover, optimised for each surrounding - maybe even flying versions for the gas giant planets.

You can help out "TO MARS" creator Samuli by giving feedback on the rover design in this task:

Keep wrecking, people !

I removed by Facebook login, and it didn't work either. And trying to reconnect to Facebook doesn't work. Maybe the API changed again.

Kalle Max Hofmann February 27, 2012 11:41 Flag

Hrmm Thierry this is really too bad! Have you tried not using facebook login but regular Wam login? I never used facebook login which seems like lucky decision in retrospect, as I never had any trouble =/

I can post your comments in the TO MARS production so they go where they belong...

Thierry Gschwind February 27, 2012 11:33 Flag

Looks good.
Since I can STILL not post any shots (and noone from WAM seems to care), comment here:
I think the arms of the rover are too short for any practical use.
Also the calibratio colour chart should placed in a way, that the camar can actually look at.

Thanks, KMax.. I hope we can work this out nicely.

Production Update #2, with first image =)

Posted January 27, 2012 by Kalle Max Hofmann 1 Thumb-up

Hey all you stargazers out there,

here's the next production update.

Things have been going a little slowly recently, at least for my taste. But, rent needs to be paid and people to be fed, so most of us engaged in paid jobs. Still there was enough time to process all the pictures we're going to use in our first episode :D

As an example, here's a little rendition of an aerial view of Neptune's moon Triton, which I also shared with the TRANSNEPTUNE production. In the final version, it will have enhanced effects to make it look more real. And it will be three-dimensional, obviously :P

Still kind of good news that we are ready to start actual production now. The last question marks for Episode one remain the space station and the green screen shoot. But first, I need a new computer to do the actual effects work - my 2007 Mac Book Pro is constantly puffing out little white clouds lately ^_^

So - maybe some more paid jobs for the next couple weeks? We'll see, but we're definitely on the right track!

The atmosphere is only 1.5 mBar, which is nearly vacuum.
Geysir do emit ice particles, and they are affected by the thin atmosphere.

Kalle Max Hofmann January 27, 2012 22:04 Flag

thanks for the detailed corrections, Thierry! I will get to work on them asap =)

What do you think about the question how Triton's atmosphere could be visualised from the surface? It's supposed to have only 1.4% the density of earth but... what does that make it look like? And what about the ice particles emitted by the geysirs... do you think that stuff could look like some snow dust in the wind, like on earth? Keeping in mind that these particles are mostly moved by gravity, and not wind... not so easy to imagine all that...!

Thierry Gschwind January 27, 2012 21:19 Flag

The picture looks nice, but since since needs to scientific accurate, here some changes:

-Triton orbits Neptun 350'000 km away, Neptun should be four times the size of Earth seen from Moon, or twelve times the size of the moon seen from Earth.

-How Neptune is position in the sky, means the camera is places at the pol of Trition, otherwise the rising Neptune must titlted inverse proportional to the lattidue. Also the thing is a bit more complicated since the orbital plane is tilted by 30° comapred to the Neptune equator, and Neptun is tilted by 28° compared to the ecliptic, whih means that Triton axis is tilted by nealry 60° . (Earth is 23°)

-The surface of Triton is more readish. This should be similar to the picture from Voyager 2, which people know.
-Neptune cannot be backlit at all, or extremly low, like the moon does with Earth, but that's not possible in this constelaation like in the picture.

I would dim the star

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triton_%28moon%29

Kalle Max Hofmann January 27, 2012 16:39 Flag

Yes the atmospherical detail is something I really wonder about. There are geysirs on Triton that shoot out ice fountains, certainly that debris could be shown flying about.

And I think you're right that it could look more impressive (and perspective-wise clearer) if Neptune is slightly below the horizon. The Transneuptune guys have calculated that Neptune would take up to 60% of the field of vision when standing on Triton, but I can't quite believe that... I've seen some NASA illustration with a Triton surface scene and there, it was smaller. Or wait, was that in this BBC sci-fi-documentary? Have to check that right away ^_^

Hannu Hoffrén January 27, 2012 16:31 Flag

Oo.. got one more idea.. I'm not sure of the perspective how big Neptune would actually look like, but how about making it significantly bigger and put part of it below horizon?

Hannu Hoffrén January 27, 2012 16:29 Flag

Well you have that nice haze on the Triton's surface and more on the left. I'd try giving some haze over Neptune too and especially pronounce the turbulence details so that it clearly says "I'm closer than Neptune". :)

Kalle Max Hofmann January 27, 2012 13:41 Flag

You're probably right that it has to be darker. I wasn't thinking of a bounce though, but since Neptune is made up mostly of atmosphere and a only relatively small solid core, I thought some of the sun's light could kind of shine through this cloudy soup!

Unless I can get the opinion of an expert on this though, it's probably safer to go with your approach and make it pitch dark :P

Any other ideas to make the visual integration of Neptune smoother?

Hannu Hoffrén January 27, 2012 13:35 Flag

Nice to hear things are progressing!

Critique up next! As an astronomy hobbyist & vfx artist must say the back lit part of Neptune does now work for me here. As normally the back side should be completely dark, now it feels more like Neptune is a small sphere floating on the surface of Triton from which it gets the additional bounced light to the back side too.

Production Update #1

Posted December 08, 2011 by Kalle Max Hofmann 0 Thumb-ups

Dear Stargazers,

we have now completed the rough cut for Episode One, which runs for 23 minutes. We have chosen Mars and Neptune to be the first two planets to be introduced, or "visited" =)

This choice is grounded in our "story arc", if you want to call it that, so I hope it will make some sense in the end.

Also, some of the most beautiful "sun cribs", nebulas with star-forming areas, are a topic.

Having the rough cut means we also have selected all the basic imagery for the episode, now these photos (mainly from NASA) have to be processed for use in the 3D environment, and lots new images have to be created on that basis.

Then we have to shoot the show's host of course, but he haven't really decided when and where to do that. First, we will finish some of the 3D scenes to make a little trailer. Hopefully, this will help us gain more support (by getting better prices at a studio for the shoot for example).

We are also very happy about the great participation here on Wreckamovie! Keep up the good work, people :D

Cosmic Greetings,
Kalle Max ^_^

No problem Samuli, I know how it is ^_^ I also had a lot of work recently, so I couldn't do as much Solar System Stuff as I wanted. On the other hand, it means I can finally afford a new computer so from here on, everything should be more fun :D

Also, so far we have only edited the thing so that means the actual graphics havn't been produced.

And there still is the possibility to use "To Mars" as a bonus feature for a disc release of SS3D =)

Samuli Jomppanen December 10, 2011 11:26 Flag

Unfortunetly To Mars is not up to the task atm. I am overtaxed by other things (but still hoping to get it rolling). In fact i have some fears for it. I am running constantly out of time to "get down with it".

Just thought this because your first stop seems to be Mars. (allthough still bit confused about whats what).

Good to hear its progressing though.
